PS4 BC Boost on PS5 Pro

I know we have a PS5 Pro Enhanced thread, but something on the Pro that's been ignored is the PS5 BC boost feature.

Last night I booted up Shadow of the Tomb Raider on the Pro. I finished the game on the One X with those enhancements back when it came out, but I wanted to see how it fared on the Pro. Running it on resolution mode and it looked GREAT. Even better than on the One X and with a locked 30.

I was curious what other games benefitted, so I asked Grok to find out. This was the result:

  • Bloodborne:
    • Improvement: Enhanced resolution (up to 1080p or slightly higher with dynamic scaling). The frame rate remains locked at 30 FPS without a patch, but the PS5 Pro stabilizes performance and reduces frame pacing issues compared to the base PS4 or PS5. Visual clarity improves with the "Enhance Image Quality" setting.
    • Note: Fans have long requested a 60 FPS unlock, but this would require a developer patch, which hasn’t been confirmed.
  • Red Dead Redemption 2:
    • Improvement: Stabilized dynamic resolution (closer to 4K on PS4 Pro’s checkerboard rendering) and improved performance consistency. The PS5 Pro pushes the resolution nearer to its theoretical maximum more often and eliminates minor frame drops seen on the base PS5. Frame rate remains capped at 30 FPS unless patched.
    • Note: The enhanced image quality setting sharpens details, making the open world visually crisper.
  • Final Fantasy XV:
    • Improvement: Boosted resolution (building on the PS4 Pro’s 1800p cap) and stabilized frame rates in its various modes (Lite, High, or Stable). The PS5 Pro can maintain higher dynamic resolutions and smoother performance, especially in demanding areas.
    • Note: No official 60 FPS unlock, but the boost enhances existing PS4 Pro optimizations.
  • Monster Hunter World:
    • Improvement: Enhanced resolution (beyond the PS4 Pro’s dynamic 1080p-1800p range) and more consistent frame rates (up to 60 FPS in Performance mode, if selected). The PS5 Pro’s power reduces dips and improves visual fidelity.
    • Note: The "Enhance Image Quality" setting refines textures and environmental details.
  • Batman: Arkham Knight:
    • Improvement: Improved resolution (beyond the PS4’s 1080p) and stabilized frame rate at 30 FPS. The PS5 Pro smooths out performance hiccups during intense scenes (e.g., Batmobile sequences) and enhances visual clarity.
    • Note: A resolution boost makes the game’s moody aesthetics pop on 4K displays.
  • Shadow of the Colossus (PS4 Remake):
    • Improvement: Enhanced resolution (building on the PS4 Pro’s 1440p-4K dynamic range) and rock-solid 30 FPS or 60 FPS (depending on the chosen mode). The PS5 Pro ensures the game hits its maximum resolution more consistently.
    • Note: The cinematic visuals benefit noticeably from the image quality enhancement.
  • The Last Guardian:
    • Improvement: Stabilized frame rate (up to 30 FPS, or closer to 60 FPS in unlocked sections) and improved resolution (beyond the PS4 Pro’s 1080p-1440p dynamic range). Performance is smoother, reducing stuttering from the original PS4 version.
    • Note: Visual enhancements highlight the game’s art direction.
  • Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice:
    • Improvement: Locked 60 FPS (unlocked on PS5 already) with a resolution boost (up to 1800p or higher dynamically). The PS5 Pro ensures maximum resolution and flawless performance throughout.
    • Note: The boost refines an already solid PS5 backwards-compatible experience.
  • God of War (2018):
    • Improvement: Enhanced resolution (up to 4K checkerboard from the PS4 Pro’s base) and a stable 60 FPS in Performance mode (unlocked via a PS5 patch). The PS5 Pro pushes dynamic resolution higher and maintains buttery-smooth gameplay.
    • Note: Image quality enhancements sharpen environmental details.
  • Dark Souls III:
    • Improvement: Locked 60 FPS (already unlocked on PS5) with a resolution bump (beyond the PS4 Pro’s 1080p). The PS5 Pro ensures peak performance and slightly crisper visuals.
    • Note: The boost complements the game’s fast-paced combat.
Probably going to play RDR2 today. Sounds like the Pro boost matches the One X version now.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider?

That game got a PS5 patch. It’s 4K/60fps. Or did you specifically play the ps4 version?

well, I know multiple of these are completely made up.
however this neatly demonstrates how dogshit AI is as a source of information, and why if you ever see someone using AI in an argument that person should instantly be dismissed.

Bloodborne is 1080p, and has no dynamic resolution. the framerate also isn't improved in any way.

RDR2 same thing. locked 1920x2160 resolution and a locked 30fps on base and pro.

Dark Souls 3, and Sekiro? zero difference there either... nor in Batman

I am actually pretty sure all of them are completely made up nonsense, but some games here I am not 100% informed on if they have dynamic resolutions or not

The PS5 Pro boost mode doesn't raise the resolution in ANY game. If a game has a dynamic resolution, it stay on the higher end of that cap due to more powerful hardware, but it will never go above that cap. Bloodborne, in particular, is the same 1080p it was on the PS4, it just a sharpener applied that give the game a slightly sharper look, and the UI a significant sharper image. Shadow of the Tomb Raider, is 4k/60 on the base PS5, it got a patch long before the Pro released. Sekiro was 1800p/60 on the PS4 Pro, etc, etc.

Basically, never trust AI.

I've seen AI reference reddit posts as if every post there is undeniable truth. Is the concept of "consider the source" something AI is simply not aware of?
They are just young. They see one or a few reddit, X or neogaf post and think it's true enough. Like a child would do, really. But they are going to improve. I mean grok is just one year old.

It also plays PS5 games better than base PS5 (see MH Wilds), so I'm not sure what this shitty troll post was aiming to achieve...
i ll not derail the thread cause everytime i talk about ps5 pro the ps5 pro defense force thread bans me, i was just stating a fact, it ll run old games worst, for the price it should run better, but that depends on devs, the machine is capable, but u are right too, it ll also run newer games better as it should.

And an issue is that some games that offer a quality vs performance mode will cap the frame rate to 30fps for quality. So even though it's constantly hitting the top end of the dynamic resolution, the game play doesn't feel nicer. It's dynamic resolution, with uncapped framerate where boost mode shines.

Bloodborne was also proven to run at a stable 60fps on the PS4 Pro with a simple hack that disabled the 30fps limit. Sony's boost mode is just so limited compared to what Microsoft is doing. On the Xbox it's doing injection like users do on Windows with DLLs. That lets it modify games to render to higher resolutions. Higher framerates are always a crap shoot through. Many games break physics or animations since you are running double the logic loops going 30 to 60, or higher. That's why the "fake" frames can be nice, they don't improve input latency. But games can feel smoother, while not breaking things.

A bunch of nonsense.
Games are running like they did on ps4 pro with more fps if there was room for it or more dynamic res if there was room for it.
Bloodborne is the same 1080p30. Framepacing is just some in world stuttering. Not changed at all. I never found it a problem myself.

There is no dedicated PS5 Version, only the PS4 Version. All they did was unlocking the framerate and let the resolution go up to 4k. This lets the PS5 output 4k/60 in BC mode.

There has been a research paper published demonstrating reduced critical thinking performance in folks who mainly use AI as first source for search, composition, etc…. I have seen that demonstrated in NeoGAF threads recently. 😉

$700 to play old game like trash, great deal (y)

It is not, it is an overpriced and mediocre improvement over PS5.

This is uncalled for and irrelevant to what the thread is about.

That’s why I said patch. It’s a patch meant for the “next gen” consoles and labeled as such by outlets like Digital Foundry.

I guess the way to play the OG would be very roundabout in an install disc and not update sort of way so I doubt he would have done that in response to the very last part of my original post.

It’s still not 4K/30 like stated in the OP either way.

The pro doesn't offer a worthwhile upgrade to Ps4 games vs the base Ps5 because the base Ps5 already maxes out the resolution and framerate of most Ps4 games (within their original resolutions/Fps caps). You'd need devs to actually update the games and enable higher resolutions and framerates for the Pro to really take advantage of it.

The pro does have an "image quality enhancement" feature for Ps4 games which is probably what the AI is using to claim that it's giving you better resolution, but the difference is very slight

All those games were mostly flawless on Ps5.

You need to check a game with problems and try to run it but i cannot think of any such case.

Not until you tell it is my experience. Basically I think AI is great provided you refine and contextualise your query over at least 3 or 4 rounds. Basically you have to get it to question itself. It also forces it to include sources that sometimes don't surface in the first response.

Never ever query AI on something you have zero knowledge of though, its best used as a research tool where you already know in general terms what an answer should look like, but you want clarity or can't recall specifics.

Yeah, the problem is folks just grab whatever is spit out from AI as if it must be true. I tend to just use google because I usually know what I'm looking for but just need help finding it. You are right though. If we are going to use AI then there needs to be some work and thought put into it. Not talking about the OP here.....just generally.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
uh .... is the AI just making shit up now?

RDR2 did not have DRS, it always ran at the 1980x2160p CB on PS4 Pro. Arkham Knight never got any enhancement patch so it's stuck at 1080p of the base PS4 and Shadow of the TR's resolution mode is also static, DF's analysis says they did not find any instance of dynamically scaling resolution. Plus that game already got a native PS5/Series patch, labeling it (PS4 Remake) is also bizarre.

    • Note: A resolution boost makes the game’s moody aesthetics pop on 4K displays.
  • Shadow of the Colossus (PS4 Remake):

Both Bloodborne and The Last Guardian are locked at 30 fps and you cannot unlock it

Why are you posting AI summaries here and pretending you wrote them, OP?

Oh wait I just looked and saw who the OP is, nevermind

Wait till people pay $500.00 to play ps4/ps5 era games on switch 2!

I’ll be getting one day zero and don’t care because I support Nintendo Games but buying a switch 2 for AAA unless exclusive titles is always silly

PS5 Pro so good it turned the 4k 60 fps of the base PS5 version of Shadow of the Tomb Raider into 4k 30.

Seems like it bypassed the performance and quality settings and went straight into the exclusive copium setting on the Pro.
