PS4 Controller - Dualshock 4 Unveilved

There are fight sticks/pads for that. If you're serious about fighting I doubt you use a standard controller.

That is like saying that there is mouse and keyboard for first person games.

Completely accurate.

But ignoring that the stick positioning is a matter of preference. I like having the two sticks where they are, and they are both the main buttons normally used on the controller. One for movement and one for camera. So to me, the analog stick is in the main position on the dualshock.

that track pad is such an afterthought. you cant reach it with your thumbs. so that means holding the controller with one hand with the other hand hovering over it.
That's patently wrong. I have a prototype controller at work. You can easily keep your hands on the grips while thumbing the touchpad.

Wow, that's actually not so bad. Really discreet looking, better than that goddam huge kinect looming over my TV... I wont mind having that sitting up.

So that camera bar is an optional accessory right? Or is that unknown at this point?

Those triggers looks a whole lot better, I hope they fell better too.

Yea... no more of those damn PS3 controller triggers. Thank god.

This really reminds me of that one controller that was amazing, that everyone had. It was the only wireless option for the PS2(?). It was a blueish wireless controller that felt really nice...

*ahh this one (I think so)*

Not as pretty as I remember... but it felt really nice.

It looks pretty good to me, but I hate the glossy material. The controller should be 100% matte, like the 360 controller. I also hope the plastic is higher quality compared to the DS3.

I keep seeing people say the sticks are concave, but from the pictures it doesn't look like it. They look convex with rims around the edge, which is certainly an improvement.

I don't think it's an attractive piece of hardware, but it sounds like it has everything I want on it. I prefer the DS3 over the 360 controller (though not by much - I enjoy both), so I'm happy with this. Whilst I have an opinion on it, I really don't care about how attractive it is, and I don't understand why anyone else does. You never look at the thing beyond locating it.

I like the Dualshock, always preferred its stick placements and the symmetrical design is something Sony likes for their handheld game stuff (Vita, PSP, controllers). I might just be conditioned to it after years of usage of the same controller layout though.

If final, the gloss finish around the d-pad and face buttons is probably an indication that the console will also have gloss finish in some way.

As most of us expected, it looks a lot better than the prototype we had seen prior to the presentation. I really like it, it looks pretty and very comfortable!

I'm hoping we can use PS3 controllers on the new console, though. I'm sure we won't know for sure until closer to the release date, right?

Looks really great to me.
The d-pad could be better but is decent, But those Triggers look perfect. Seems comfy and really utilises a nice contrast of materials - elegant and modern construction & presention imo. Refined.
I only hope the console follows suit.

Looks a bit Mad Catz to me. Wondering what sort of use the touch pad will have also. Still, as long as it's comfy and sturdy.

This should give an idea.

That looks loads better. The use of gloss around the buttons is baffling to me. The one place where you'll easily see fingerprints and greasiness and they decide to put it there. The only time it'll ever look good is when it's still in the packaging.

The look of the controller suffers from too many different materials and surfaces. Between the matte plastic, glossy finish, greyish buttons, deep black touchpad and textured back, it has five! It makes it look messy and like a cheap third party knockoff.

Other than the look it looks comfy as hell.

Theory
--------

Problem:
- It is not plausible for the Dual Shock 4 to have a "light bar" that indicates things for the player such as health. They didn't show it off. So it can't matter. It has to interact in deep ways with the PS Eye. Obviously PS Eye + Move can detect depth and have it behave more like, if not fully like, a Move.

Hypothesis:
- This makes MORE sense is the PS Eye's two cameras can be separated. The position in true 3D space can be determined and properly related. Separated cameras can exaggerate the fidelity greatly. You wouldn't get Kinect in-depth recognition camera, but you'd get a lot more "immersive" scanning and imaging capabilities in 3D. They would end up very different imaging peripherals while also allowing some 3rd party parity for cross-platform developments.

Evidence:
- Only rumours.
- Design of the PS EYE indicates they can swivel differently, meaning that their difference is a feature. So they MUST have been tested as separate units at one point.

Judging from both the controller and the camera, looks like PS4 is going to have a more "rugged" look and feel - not something I usually associate with the Playstation brand.

Almost reminds me of the "tank-like" aesthetic of the original Xbox.

I think the button colours are letting the controller down. It'd be a shame to leave them behind, but the Vita and the PSP survived without them. I'm more prone to say the square button rather than 'the pink button', anyway.

Sweet Jesus, so much bitching in this thread. If Sony listened so some of these complaints; the controller would have 3 analogue sticks, 17 face buttons and make sandwiches.
The controller looks ergonomically sound and I suspect it looks great up close and personal.

There is no benefit to asymettrical sticks, it's all in your head. The sticks are further apart now as well, so those with freakishly long thumbs are catered for and the handles have been lengthened.

Yep, great to hold, but terrible buttons.

Anyway I'm glad Sony took some inspiration from that.

I think the touch pad ruins the whole look of the controller. Why couldn't they put it on the back like on the Vita?

I have to admit, I'm not convinced. I like the look of the ergonomics of the controller, but they really didn't do much to sell the extra features the controller has over the DS3 to me other than the Share button.

I think it looks great, looks very comfortable and my main two qualms with the current Dualshock seem to have been fixed: the analog sticks and triggers not being concave. The D-pad looks much better too. Can't wait to feel it in my hands.
