PS4 Controller - Dualshock 4 Unveilved

I have to admit, I'm not convinced. I like the look of the ergonomics of the controller, but they really didn't do much to sell the extra features the controller has over the DS3 to me other than the Share button.

They didn't even try to sell it, they just showed it and put it away. Wait for E3.

I love this shot. So sexy!

DS4, you so fine.

It sounds a bit stupid saying this without actually holding it but it looks way more comfortable. I'm glad they've made it a bit more ergonomic. Also the rubberised part looks cool. However I'm a bit unsure of how useful the trackpad will be on there, maybe it'll be good for menu navigation.

still trying to figure out what you'd use a touchpad for with no screen

Navigating a cursor based interface like you do on a laptop.

Seriously, how have people still not gotten this? The system has built in sharing to Youtube, Facebook, etc.. Those websites aren't going to redesign themselves around a controller, and using analog cursor control is shit. The touchpad is the interface for all this social media sharing they've integrated in the box.

The fact that a few games might make use of it and they'll likely use the touchpad for the UI is just a plus. The real purpose is to make all their other features actually work.

it looks like a cheap mad catz peripheral as many have said

but the functionality sounds awesome

its what the PS3 controller should have been

The gloss was a poor choice. It's not as aesthetically pleasing but I suspect it handles a little nicer. Bevel around the buttons may be a little too sharp for my thumbs. Still not into the touch pad but I can live with it.

Remembering the Vita reveal, they enumerated over all the new interface features in detail during presentations.

In contrast they didn't give us any hints about the applications of the touchpad or camera in games last night. Which I was keen to see, particularly about the touchpad.

Saving for later I guess.

That is like saying that there is mouse and keyboard for first person games.

Completely accurate.

But ignoring that the stick positioning is a matter of preference. I like having the two sticks where they are, and they are both the main buttons normally used on the controller. One for movement and one for camera. So to me, the analog stick is in the main position on the dualshock.

I have been playing fighting games since the snes. Never once have I bought an specialist stick.

that's like saying buy a mouse and keyboard for a shooter.

Edit: beaten.

Not really. If you're serious about shooters and want to do as well as you possibly can then you'll look for the best method of input available for your platform. Same goes for fighters.

Neglecting to use the superior stick layout because you don't want to buy a separate controller for a genre such as fighters is kind of stupid though. That said, I'll be looking for an alternative controller that has my preferred layout since I like playing shooters at the best of my abilites.

Looks perfectly fine to me, maybe a little plain looking face on. If they'd just use the vita dpad and dropped the colours on the face buttons it would've looked a little more classy, but whatever.

I use both Sony and 360 controllers and got no preference over symmetrical/asymmetrical sticks as long as they don't get in the way I'm cool.

Well, yes, that's largely my point, but I kinda think they should have. Either show the controller in conjunction with what the extra functionality offers, or don't show the controller at all.

I suspect the share button was the issue, there; they needed to show the controller to highlight the immediacy of the sharing capability, and that's fair enough, but it did leave the lingering questions in the air about how the rest of the functionality benefits gaming.

Hated the initial leaks, but I'm actually diggin the promo shots. We'll see when i get my hands on it, but I've always liked the dual shock. This just seems like it's more 360, which is a think a good thing.

Overall kinda futurish enough, but I don't like the bottom part of the controller, I mean the rubber-looking other half of the handles. Even the roughly texturized material on most of the controller look a little unwelcoming :/

Still on the plus side for me though, great thing that they modified the triggers and sticks.

The DS4 d-pad is much improved over the shitty ass d-pad Sony's been using since the PS1. They really need to remove that gloss though, it looks like pure shit.

And I'm glad to see Sony went back to this controller for the analog sticks. These sticks were amazing, much better the sticks on the DS1-3. I actually tried to get these sticks on a Dual Shock 2, they didn't work.

Don't care what anyone says, when I saw that pad I said holyshit with a smile on my face
That thing is the sexiest pad I've seen

I might be a bit crazy, but I feel like we live in a world where the d-pad isn't relevant anymore.
It could be replaced by other technologies, like maybe a tactile touch screen?
It would be much more convenient to operate in that location than in the middle of the controller, IMO.

Agreed. It's gorgeous. The D-pad looks beautiful and having the sticks both convex AND concave is genius. Perfect.

Shuhei Yoshida describing the controller to Kotaku:

http://kotaku.com/5985921/a-man-who-has-used-the-ps4s-new-controller-tells-us-why-its-better

Me: Is the touchpad a thing for my thumbs? For me to reach in to touch it? Or is it for me to take my hand off one of the controller's prongs and use it with my pointer finger?

Yoshida: Both. Having a touchpad or touch input we really wanted to do because, these days, all these devices have touch control. Instead of trying to replace buttons or sticks with touch we thought that some things cannot be done as well as they can with a touchpad—like swiping or pinch-to-zoom. These functions are easier to do with multi-touch. But we didn't want to make the main control with sticks and buttons more difficult. We really focused on making this basic stuff better… We worked on that first and then looked at what space we had left to incorporate this.

It's designed so that you can reach into the edge of the touchpad with your thumb to do simple functions…

Me: To scroll and things like that?

Yoshida: Yeah. Or some applications, you might want to put the controller down and use the touchpad like...the touchpad on the PC. We are thinking about other ways to use it.

The sticks:

Yoshida: It's improved in terms of precision. The center area is more useable. When you try the games, you'll notice you have better, more subtle control when you're driving.

Me: Are you saying there's less of a dead zone in the middle? There's more range?

Yoshida: Yeah.

Me: Small motions will be detected better?

Yoshida: Yeah, you'll have more, tighter control.

The triggers:

it has more play. On the DualShock 3 it's hard to use L2 and R2 the analog way. It's ‘press down' or ‘not press'. But with the DualShock 4, you can do something in between."

I think I heard something in the conference about lower latency for the controller also?

Despise the black circles around the left and right parts. The analog looks horrible, I wonder how it'll feel. I don't need to say what I think about the "Share"-button. Touch on the front-side is... yeah, that's gonna be interesting to say the least.

Just looking at it, it seems as if it will be miles better than DS3 but still well short of the 360 controller. Obviously, that can change (either way). Can't wait to get it in my hands and see how it actually feels.

I really like the mildly textured bottom. And I am sad the touchpad is not like the Vita's back with the tiny PS button logos all over.

I like the gloss areas around the dpad and shape buttons. With the way they're cut flat against the more contoured and textured grips, it gives it a look like cut and polished stone.

Problem:
- It is not plausible for the Dual Shock 4 to have a "light bar" that indicates things for the player such as health. They didn't show it off. So it can't matter. It has to interact in deep ways with the PS Eye. Obviously PS Eye + Move can detect depth and have it behave more like, if not fully like, a Move.

Well, they didn't really show the new DS4 off much at all. They didn't show off the new touchpad either. I think what they did show was just a token gesture to give the audience something tangible since they clearly weren't going to show the actual console.

My theory about them saying the light bar is there in part to indicate player health is to justify it's presence if you don't have the PS4 Camera peripheral. i.e. hopefully this means the camera is optional and not mandatory like so many fear. Almost assuredly the light bar is only really there for Move-like support but they're just trying to provide some justification for it if the camera isn't present.

Not crazy about the gloss around the dpad/buttons because it will look fingerprinty. Otherwise looks nice and comfy finally. Bigger handles, better triggers, better thumbsticks. That texture under the grips looks like it will feel nice.

The triggers MAY be too flat. We'll have to see how they feel in practice. The headphone port is nice and all but I will still use my receiver for that. No way that controller can power my headphones like a dedicated receiver does.

Here's what I want to know:

Assuming the triggers are much improved, how will you hold the new controller?

Will it be like the DS3 where you rest your index fingers on R1/L1, or 360 where you rest on the triggers? (At least that's how I do it, I guess I never really considered the possibility that some people likely use their middle finger for the triggers on the 360 controller).

In other words, in an FPS, which buttons on DS4 will be used for iron sights and firing weapons?

Definitely seems like it should be better, just kind of wish the lip on the end of L2/R2 triggers were more raised like the cheap priced Real Triggers you can buy for current DS3 controllers which makes it much better for shooters. Have to feel it though, maybe it works we'll already with the other differences.

The handles look like the 360 ones now. They way they are shaped and curved. This looks like a really great controller, way better than any previous DS. I may like it more than the 360's.

still look bad tho, they need the superior Vita's d-pad(same as the prototype)

An excellent redesign.

Disappointed that they didn't go with a split controller, but wasn't really expecting it. This is a pretty excellent upgrade to the standard paradigm though.

I also like the move to micro USB charger, since all devices use those nowadays, phones, tablets you name it.

And have we seen anything to suggest the Move controller shown in the MM demo was different than the current one?
