PS4 Controller - Dualshock 4 Unveilved

Wish they could have at least placed the sticks further apart. I have to be conscious of my thumbs colliding when I use Dual Shocks. It's nice that they realized the problem with convex tips, but I'll have to pay extra for a third party pad or an adapter if I get a PS4, because I am not using this.

They appear to be at least 2 centimeters further apart than before, and even before I've never heard of this problem. Do you have marshmallow thumbs or something? :P

I am really worried about that to be honest. Plasma TV and in a darker room I can see reflections driving me nuts. I hope there is a way to turn it off.

Did this happen with Move? Seems to be the same kind of light but I've never tried Move.

lol people will complain about everything ...you cant please everyone but I myself think it looks perfectly fine.
The ONLY issue I can see is the D pad I thought it might be a all in one d pad but I dont play fighting games so I dont care all that much.

As a whole, not terribly pleasing to the eye but it looks like it's likely much more comfortable in the hands, and I like the potential of the new features. And unlike with the change to the Wiimote, you can still have a fully traditional controller even if devs ignore the touch, motion and share features (which, again, I like the potential of).

So that leaked picture was true.
I'm sorry, but this controller looks ugly.
It doesn't look comfortable to hold due to those short, chubby handles.
The dpad though looks a bit more comfortable to use than te PS1/2/3 one.
The R2/L2 triggers look way better than on PS3 though.

I'll wait and see, though. Maybe it'll get some changes till release.

You think they made the handles smaller?

Clearly, CLEARLY, they did not.

that track pad is such an afterthought. you cant reach it with your thumbs. so that means holding the controller with one hand with the other hand hovering over it. too small to use without having to look down at your controller which is especially bad when the relevant screen is in front of you.

thinking about the usability reminds me of the backtouch on the vita a poorly thought out feature.

tho moving away from the old dual shock shape is a good choice. the share and options buttons might be too close to your primary inputs especially considering pressing these buttons will likely bring up the console OS.

the concave analogs also a good change, looks pretty similar to the silver 360 controllers.

I love the controller (minus the left analog placement of course). My favorite thing is the headphone jack on the controller. I have wanted that for so damn long now!

I really like the new controller. It's a bit odd-looking at first, but the new features are nice, and it's about time the DualShock got an improved design. The increased size and the reshaped thumbsticks are definitely for the better. Can't wait to hold one of these in my hands.

EDIT: I do think it could do without the glossy surfaces around the d-pad and main buttons, however...

Its ugly. Real ugly. Worse than the old Playstation controllers which were already very bland.

But proper triggers should make it a big improvement, functionality-wise.

Still, kinda disappointing. This was their chance to get on par with the Xbox controller, but they dropped it.

Loving the two toned look, hopefully a sign at the actual console design.

I can cover the Sony logo on the DS3 with my thumbs just fine with stretching room to spare, I can't see why the touchpad is much different than hitting start or select, I doubt they will be using the touchpad for complicated actions.

Can't really say much about the rest of the controller but I love those grips. They look really big and long so my hands can fit comfortably on it while playing. The D-Pad looks really awkward with that indent in the middle. I still don't understand that touch pad in the middle because it looks so small, the only function i can see for it is tapping. The share button is still amazing to me.

I give the controller a 7.5/10
If that D-Pad wasn't pushed in the middle, and that touchscreen wasn't there then I would've 100% accepted this controller.

  • Don't mind the touchpad, like that it's also a button.
  • Triggers look nice.
  • The handles seem longer. Love that.
  • Headphone jack's a really nice touch.
  • Like that it has move built in. I hope this'll make developers utilize it in productive ways in core games.

I was really tired of the DualShock and was hoping they'd completely deviate from it, but I'm really liking this. Also, are the holes on the front just a speaker or also a mic?

Ok, I need some smart GAFfer to figure out just how much longer the handles are. Doesn't look like much, but it might be enough.

Triggers don't look as good as I was hoping, but definitely better than they were. Overall the controller's a big improvement.

Of all the things shown at the meeting, this was what disappointed me the most. It's just horribly ugly, like some clumsy patchwork quilt of technology. I mean, for a presentation that stresses simplicity and 'elegance' and then shows this thing? It's a real and unnecessary disconnect.

Honestly, the concave-ish thumbsticks are my favorite thing about the new controller. I absolutely could not stand the thumbsticks on the DS3.

theres a difference, the ps/xbox button are by design supposed to be difficult in accessibility because its for quitting and less non gaming functions since they disrupt gaming.

the touchpad seems to be something they want to use ingame (they wouldn't devote that much space on the controller and cost in parts otherwise)

It doesn't look bad, but seriously these Japanese need to make a bigger controller for us. My hands are way too big for the DS3 as it is. I wish they made bigger controllers :(
