PS4 gets a new, lower price starting Friday: $349.99

Phil Spencer said they were ready to counter Sony's decisions, I wanna see what they come up with. I would imagine holiday deals will be insane for both consoles.

Yes, but when he said that he thought the price drop would be announced at PGW. That means he expected to be countering it with a Halo bundle. Now he either gives Sony the rest of the month or he drops the price of the XB1 and loses a lot of money on the ridiculous amount of bundles they've already got.

Man, Sony must have good announcements in store for Paris Games Week and PSX to announce this now and not at those events.

Tempted to get another PS4, but have no idea how that will work since do I download everything twice? Just choose a primary?

Doesn't seem like a strategically sound move to wait until the end of October and even less so December missing out on all those sales just so you can make the announcement at a show. Holiday shopping season is already beginning here in the states and this move will not make the Xbox One an instant choice for the price conscious shoppers.

Hope Sony will do good marketing around BloodBorne(+expansion), Until Dawn and Tearaway unfolded this holiday to fill the first party games.

I think they have things planned far in advance, and Halo 5 should sell quite well regardless of what Sony is doing. Bigger overall install base benefits everyone.

Curious as to why they are staggering the price drops rather than just a global reduction if that is what they had planned all along.

Now all they need is a No Man's Sky bundle.

I dont think this is getting released this year (If it was already sony would have announced with a bundle as this is a big game). We wont be seeing new bundles anymore except special bundle for Black friday with a 20$ -50$ price cut + one more free game.

Expected once the official cuts started elsewhere but props to those who called it even earlier than that.

The division between PS4/XB1 sales really was getting too narrow in US and it felt like time for Sony to use price directly to drive further demand.

Should be interesting holiday period. I still figure XB1 will sell more in US but that doesn't really matter so much as what the gap is if they do. So long as Sony remain overall ahead by decent margin come 2016 they're in good shape IMHO. Being ahead over 2 years into the gen in US should mean they can hold the lead throughout so long as they remain competitive in the market.

Post holiday period the lower price with bigger exclusives finally starting to arrive (U4) should help them too.

I think XB1 will do well too and enter 2016 in respectable position in US but while the lead isn't huge I'm really thinking Sony is going to manage to hold them off fully closing the gap now.

Although there's still plenty of years to go yet so who knows MS might still find a way of closing the gap in the end.
I seems self-serving for Sony to distract MS with US sales leadership while it cleans up pretty much everywhere else, indeed winning the US isn't as important to Sony as it is vital to MS.

I expected the price cut for PGW so surprised they've announced globally already

Sony is not trying to stop Halo 5 sales instead they are trying to gain more sales by stoping the gamers who want to play 3rd party games mostly (they may tempted to go for XB1 which was cheaper before this price cut and has big exclusives over PS4) with a price cut and gain some momentum.

This assumes No Mans Sky will be ready any time soon.

I expect NMS to be in a PSVR launch bundle. Doubt it will be released sooner.

And here I was having a good time. Thanks.

Nice move for Sony. Uncharted bundle for $349 is going to soar up the charts now.

And the Star Wars bundle looks even more tempting now, I'm just not interested in BF.

If you're in Europe, wait for Paris Games Week conference at the end of the month. I bet that's when it's announced and applied for us.

It's better to get the price down now in the US than at the end of the month. US is already ramping up for their holiday sales season, plus Sony wants to have good price when MS's only heavy hitter lands in the US [Halo 5]. Majority of Halo fans are in US, so that game will not be such a big threat in the EU.

EU's "peak sales" month is not November, but December. So Sony can wait for a while before dropping the price there.

And there it is...

Not gonna say "I told you so" to all the skeptics that kept telling us there wouldn't be a price drop till they were blue in the face but ...

I told you so. ;)

Those same revisions could be used in a newer model/case.

I feel like 2016 is when we see the slim version.

Summer 2017 at the earliest, it hasn't even hit $299 yet. PS1/PS2 slim versions were like 4/5 years into the lifecycle when it was cost effective to change production toolset. PS3 needed a revision to save money whereas PS4 is in profit so it would be stupid to lose profits by revising early.

Feels good to be right. Also the idea of them dropping the price at PGW just because that is Halo's launch day always seemed like console war fan fiction. Always maintained it was better to drop before Halo even launched to maintain momentum.

MS counter should be for the Holiday only $329 no games, or $379 bundle comes with Forza Horizon 2.

They've already got their bundles, they're planned months in advance. They're not gonna react to this.

It's obvious they're gonna do a retread of last year, late October announce a $50 drop across the whole bundle line. TBH it needs to be $100 if they want to compete.

People saying all year ps4 would not get a price cut, it was obvious it would, 50 is not enough though IMO.

Sony must think we'd rather be getting into snowball fights up here than get a PS4. I am so glad I got mine at launch.

Sony cannot control exchange rates.

If they had some exclusives they wouldn't have needed to.

At the same time, just because they don't need to doesn't mean they shouldn't. Keep the pedal down.

Exclusives would not change anything..... Price, bundles, xmas shopping, third parties are why consoles sell so much in the holidays. People still have not realised this?

You think MS is going to drop 50 every year? So it will be free in a few years? They cannot keep doing this every year.

There it is. That'll help counter the lack of exclusives Sony has this fall.

Exclusives have nothing to do with it...why are people posting this? Do you think it was sunset and forza that sold x1's last year instead of 329, assassins creed and 3-4 free games with the system? Many years 360 had no exclusives and ps3 had plenty yet 360 won easily.
