PS4 Launch Thread [Thread being archived 1/1/14]

Thanks for answering my question. =) I'll probably get one next week, and see if it helps. Any recommendations for the coolers?

EDIT: How much they consume power by the way?
EDIT.2: It seems they work via the USB-port, which is a negative point, as I'll need one for charging the controller and one for the Bluetooth headset, once it's patched to work with the PS4. =/

Not sure about how much power they consume. But yeah, mine uses the usb port. There are some I think you can buy that have their own power cord, but I'm not positive.

Killzone is a shining light in shooter history for me. If you remember times before Doom3 nearly every good shooter set you off in a big environment and you had to dig yourself through audio logs, notes and hints. For me, egoshooter design like this is rewarding while CoD and BF bore the shit out of me.

Feels good to play the campaign. Sooo good.

I knew someone was going to respond with this. I hate the linearity of CoD and BF. As I said, I've been playing FPS games since Wolfenstein and I loved all the secret rooms and exploration involved back then. But that isn't the problem with KZ, it just feels poorly designed, whereas games like Wolfenstein/DOOM/RotT/DN3D etc had subliminal design (they were like the Mario of FPS games). I wouldn't call KZ deep by any stretch of the imagination - you don't have to dig through audio logs, notes and hints at all as none of those will help you out. You just have to walk around aimlessly until you find 'the crash site', or 'the bunker' and then shoot some shit. Or press 'up' on the D-Pad and follow. Not exciting or rewarding.

Regardless, I know my opinion will go against the grain but I had to vent and I spent 3 hours playing Killzone last night and wondered why I'd bothered. Today is Resogun and SM3DW day. And it will be glorious.

Just checked few local stores, and there was only one flat cooler, and it's 25.9dB, which is louder than most of them. I'm not exactly thrilled about the idea of that fan noise being added to the PS4's own fan.

Managed to get the Knack pack today. Is the PS4 UI really really laggy when playing all games, or just Knack?

Pressed the PS button and nothing happened for about 2 minutes, then it popped up after I have up and carried on playing.

Must your system, mine was super quick.

Haven't play Knack yet, but the UI is always completely instant for me. I did upgrade to SSHD though.

Maybe the game was still installing in the background?

My UI is incredibly fast. Maybe 1/4th second wait between hitting PS button and going to UI, switching to another app and then double tapping back into the game. No wait.

I dunno about anything else, but didn't you see that huge plume of smoke right after you zipline down for the first time? Doesn't that kinda make it obvious where the crash site is? Or were you distracted by the airship lol

I think I must have just timed it bad, it's fine now but I was downloading every free thing I could at the same time, so installing something in the background might have made it slow to a crawl. The first 3 attempts all did that and now it's smooth as butter again. Cheers.

How are people finding the noise of the console, reports appear to be conflicting but I'm seeing some consistency towards noisy.

I've had mine on a shelf in an open entertainment center and sit probably 5-6 feet from it with no problems. Not silent but with the stereo at even a lowish level I don't really hear it.

It's not whisper quiet. I'm aware it's there and the fan definitely ramps up when pushed but it's a powerful launch console in a small package.
It doesn't bother me and I'm loving it so far.

Shit, I just noticed there's a very annoying noise coming from my speakers. As there is no noise at all when I plug them into my notebook, the problem must be my monitor. (My speakers only have Cinch ports, so I've plugged them into the 3.5mm headset port of my monitor)

As a workaround, I've turned the volume in the settings of the monitor to the maximum and turned the speaker volume down. Now it seems to be fine.

Library is like your download list. You can redownload from there if you delete digital stuff.

I knew that, I'm just surprised there seem to be no options at all.

About as quiet as the Wii U, so I barely notice the noise at all. Same as the Wii U, loud when it's doing things from disc and quiet when not.

One is silent the other was louder but now sounds like a jet engine (I can literally hear it in the other room) even on the xmb.

My PS4 seems pretty much silent.

Mine picks up during moments when it's not being as stressed and during games it's not as loud. Then again I have a PC with 8 case fans that is not necessarily built for silence. Noise is the least of my concerns with PS4 though.

Only time it ever makes noise is the couple of seconds to read a disk. Completely quiet any other time.

So there's an issue with ps4 and bitstream(dts)/(dolby) over optical. The audio for some games starts stuttering like crazy while installing, it sounds like a chopper but with fragments of game audio instead of non descript whooshing. Tried it on 2 different ps4's with different audio systems (mine and a buddy) and it happens quite consistently within a minute or two from starting to play a game while still installing. It seems fine post install but it sort of renders the feature unusable to me.

Yes, I do this with Battlefield 4 which I got from Amazon's US PSN's store for roughly $35. As long as the US account is activated to have your PS4 as its primary console you're good to go.
and you can play BF4 remotely on the vita using your uk account?

I take it the PS4 is supposed to make that clicking switch sound whenever it's turned on and off?

Also I'm falling in love with the controller, it feels great. Worthy successor to the Xbox 360 controller (haven't tried the X1's yet, I'm sure it's just as great). And it was genius to allow people to connect their head-phones straight into the controller to use as a sound system. Can you do this on the X1? I hope so.

Have to say, I'm finding myself quite disappointed with the visuals in Killzone.

It just seems very uneven. Some stuff looks great, but then something off in the background will catch my eye that looks a bit crappy. I've just beaten that level from the Feb reveal, and the sprawling cityscape that looked so amazing in a blurry livestream actually looks pretty rough in 1080p.

Doesn't help that the art style is really bland too, in comparison to KZ2/3. I fired up the first level of Killzone 3 this morning, and whilst the lower resolution was immediately noticeable, in terms of visual cohesiveness and style, I honestly though it looked better than Shadowfall.

What is running when the ps4 is on standby? Mine makes a noise when its on standby, i'm kinda paranoid that leaving it on standby all the time will have a long term effect on it!

My replacement PS4 arrived and was able to boot up and install the update with no problems! Played a little bit of Resogun, now installing some games! Woohoo! Next gen is finally here for me!

Do you have a disc in there or anything?

Mine seemed alarmingly loud at first too, but it turned out it was still installing Killzone. Now I can't hear it at all, and my console is only a couple of metres from my bed.

Man the wifi of the ps4 sucks. im getting 60-70% when the router is literally outside my room.

Interesting. Mine is only 8 metres away from the router on the same floor and I'm only getting 62%. Where as my PS3 would be on a 100%. I hope this isn't a potential problem in terms of net quality?

So far my ps4 is silent. less noise than my ps3 slim.

also wanted to ask. Is there no way to filter the broadcasts from live from playstation area to display people in my friendlist? Any way at all to see if someone from my playlist is streaming and what?
