PS4 System Software Preview – USB Music Player, New Home Screen Colors, More

This. Also, whatever happened to just dumping my music media directly onto the HD?

Anyone else remember using custom soundtracks on the original Xbox and the ESPN sports titles? It was GODLY in the NHL 2K series. Bring that shit back, yo.

Yeah, OG XBox having custom soundtrack stuff was crazy for the time. Then 360 ramped it up waaay more. I want that stuff back!

this sounds pretty neat. although I just want the xbox360 level of playback. it had USB/DLNA/HDD support and in-game music tracks stopped when playing.

I'd be fine with that. I used those features a decent bit on 360 as well.

I don't think that is coming. Sony already released a bluetooth headset and it needs a dongle to function. maybe the controller/keyboard takes up too much bandwidth or something.

Wait, really? That's so stupid.

Why did Sony decide to go with Bluetooth v2.1 for the PS4 again? Seems like 3.0 would have been better.

Still no friends online notification.
So simple and yet so far away.

Do the PS3 and Vita have friend notifications?

It would sure make MLB's music a lot better, holy man am I sick of the same 7 songs.
Custom walkup music would be fantastic! Doubtful it'll work off USB.

Place your bets, which comes first?

DriveClub PS+ or PS4 2.0?

Same time! I can't help but think that most of Drive clubs issues are because Sony has been updating backend servers in prep for this firmware update, limiting the servers that are up for PSN and causing all of these performance issues the past week or so.

USB music! DriveClub saved!! I can't stand playing racing games and forced to listen to crappy licensed mainstream music.

Can't wait.

Theres no confirmation USB playback works with beta software

You...may pay for this one

I'm not sure. The best solution is to have two encryption keys, one for important data and the other for unimportant stuff. Maybe they've already implemented it on the Vita and are in the process of doing the same on PS4.

Ya, that makes sense. I feel like they've had more time with the Vita, too.

Wait, really? That's so stupid.

The Gold Wireless Headset? I don't think that's Bluetooth...and it works as a normal headset too, you just plug it in with the jack.

? Microsoft still doesn't have themes and only just added USB playback last month.

There've been themes day one? Not game themes, but colors for sure. It syncs across to desktop and phone as well if you desire it to

Encryption is the obvious reason, since movies/music on the HDD were one of the things that contributed to the PS3 hack.

That's really depressing. There is a benefit to having a tighter security model in place. I hope/assume Sony's introduced safety concepts that would prevent overflow attacks from app playback

Needing external storage to listen to music is lame. But I guess that will be fixed when DLNA is added.

Why no usb video player though?

And friend notifications and online ghosting?

It plays in the background while you play the game and it turns off in-game music. How is that not custom soundtracks?
I was thinking more along the lines of a feature that lets an ingame player import music from your library and play the music in the context of the game, not from a system player.

Is that what goodacre is talking about? He didn't mention what the headset was. If it is the Golds (which I own), then no, they aren't bluetooth. I thought he was referring to a new headset that had just come out or something.

Some great features in there, but still no ability to organize our ever-growing libraries of games? Come on, Sony. That's an essential feature.

Honestly I find this list to be pretty embarrassing for a "2.0" release that's the main update in an entire year. As someone who owns both systems (and favours the PS4 for my multiplats) this is underwhelming. It looks like the list from a single one of Microsoft's updates which they've been churning out all year.

Why can't I just copy media files (Video/Pictures/music) from a USB and store them on my HDD?

Why can't I put my own background images as wallpapers?

Why can Vita pause/resume and not PS4?

That is all...

Yay for progress I guess...but this is getting kinda old here. It doesn't make me want another system, because I think that's just overkill at this point, it's just so annoying.

Has to be; they came out with the Silver headset, but that's straight up wired. Maybe he's thinking of the old Sony Bluetooth one?

Relieved to see that there are more features coming in this update which haven't been announced yet.

Shame it won't be those big ticket items, they'd want to sing about them as much as possible if they were coming.

What has Xbox One added that is comparable to SharePlay?

So one machine now has background music but no DLNA, the other has DLNA without background music. How difficult can it be to just have both pieces of this puzzle?

I get the suspend/resume complaints but not the pause downloads. I just cancel the downloads I don't want and then download them later after one has finished..takes 30 seconds.

Like yeah I get it seems like a trivial feature to add but it's never impacted my ability to enjoy my ps4. The anger over it seems blown way out of proportion.

I wanted to try out the FFXIV beta, so I set it to download. Later I tried doing other stuff on the web such as streaming a movie, which wasn't working out because the PS4 was currently sucking up all the available bandwidth for a download that wasn't going to finish anytime soon. My choices? Not watch anything, or cancel the download and lose all downloaded progress up until that point.

I didn't get to try the FFXIV beta.

What, Sony give Microsoft a fight in the OS department? Man, people must have been on drugs or something.

Did you not see the February PS4 reveal? The OS looked like it was going to slaughter everything a console had ever seen. Now we're just hoping to get our PS3 and 360 shit back.

Yeah, OG XBox having custom soundtrack stuff was crazy for the time. Then 360 ramped it up waaay more. I want that stuff back!

The OG Xbox had better custom soundtrack's imo. Having it as a system level feature in the 360 stopped games from including proper support. It was much better having an in-game music CD in PGR2, which changed tracks as you began new racers, than it was simply having a playlist play through contextless in PGR4.

Ideally we'd get both... but I'll settle for either rather than the nothing we have right now.

The changes are great, but it's baffling given the improvements to the library that it's not one of the top tabs.

They really need to better utilize that and stop throwing everything in the recently used bar. Even if it's capped at 15.

This all great and all that but where the hell is my DLNA/VIDEO SUPPORT??
Sony come on its not like your company isn't the founder of all things media, is it really that hard to just create a video player or just outsource it?
It's not rocket science

My estimate on release however is last week o Oct or first week of Nov

After that the only major thing missing is USB video playback. I would have taken that over USB music player any day, as I have no use for the latter.

Content Area and Library: PS4’s Content Area, which shows the latest games and apps a PS4 owner has used, has been redesigned to help make it easier to quickly find and access content. It now shows 15 of a player’s most used apps or games, and additional items will be added to a player’s Library. The Library on PS4 has improved filter and sort functions to help organize contented by type (game / app / TV & video), name (a – z or z – a), recently used, or install date.

15 is still too many games and apps to go through to reach the Library folder. Give me the option to limit it to 3-5 games, and the same amount of apps and I'm happy. I'd also prefer to have more than one Library folders; retail games, digital games and PS+ games, just like I had on the PS3. The single folder is going to have too many games to conveniently browse further on.

What exactly are you using DLNA for?

Even better, put everything in the library and just use pins for the main screen.

I have personally stated in past blog posts that we listen to our fans. PlayStation has heard gamers....

Omg.
-Notificatons when friends are online
-Pausing Downloads
-Folders
-A fix for the broken video recording
- Suspending games

Some of this is probably comming!!!

...when they say they want more ways to find friends to play with

Enhanced Voice Commands: The ability to control PS4 using voice has been improved. Players can now say ‘PlayStation’ to begin commands, and ‘All Commands,’ to see a list of all voice command options available. New voice commands were added for live broadcasting, including “Start broadcast,” “End broadcast,” and “Find face."

Thank goodness we can finally tell our PS4s to 'Find Face'.

WTF?

Probably beaten but...

We have not yet announced a date. That said we don’t want you guys playing some of the biggest games of the year without the biggest update of the year.

So what's the next big release?! Call of Duty I think?

I'm OK with USB Music Player being USB only for now, better than waiting even longer for the update and I'm sure DLNA is coming. I really wish Sony had included at least one USB port on the back (or even side like Xbone) of the console though, hate things poking out the front :-(. Even the Wii U has something like 2 rear USB ports.

Hmm..quite nice. If "backup" actually allows everything, including full games...I can finally swap the HDD and not take over a week (non-stop) to download everything.

will it now be possible to have multiple HDDs and swap them whenever you want?

sorry, I thought the gold wireless set was a bluetooth dongle.

Guys I have a chance to get a PS4 with 2 controllers and FIFA 15, for 315 shipped to me. Should I do it?
If I was the flip it, how much would I get?
I already have an Xbox one but I'm considering the PS4 but I want the cheapest price possible. Can I get it for cheaper or should I just pull the trigger?

That's an amazing deal IMO
