PS4 System Software Preview – USB Music Player, New Home Screen Colors, More

It's convenient if your friend wants to demo a game with a ton of input added.

I don't say that trying to be a dick, it's just the truth. There is no way to stream a game and not have a noticeable amount of input lag. The further you are from that person the worse it's gonna be.

Most people love their Remote Play but I am not surprised you are trying to belittle that feature and pretend like people will try to stream game from their friends in China.

Feature exists for a long time now so it is well known what it can and cant do.

As long as your friend lives in the same state or same larger area, it is going to work fine. It wont work well on another continent thats for sure.

Beats watching a trailer, paying for renting, or driving to a gamestop and hope to find a kiosk with a demo. It beats begging developers to release a demo, pre-ordering for Beta access, and lastly, paid early access.

Streaming obviously has its caveats and we would be naive not to expect some kind of issues that's inherently in the tech. That however doesn't stop the tech from being a feasible and useful feature widely used in many ways.

I guess that depends on what you mean by "fine". Now, I know I'm pretty input lag sensitive, but I can barely remote play on my vita through my local network at what I would call an "acceptable" level of lag.

So, extrapolating from that, I don't think I ever could get any real use out of that feature.

Monthly updates like MS? Not a chance in hell. This will be a long generation for those that expect such thing.

Well i don't mind annually big updates but Sony must listen to what is important for their costumers. If after 3.0 in 2015 we still can't pause downloads or have folders or resume/suspend or all the other minor stuff then they better have huge umbrellas to cover their asses from the constant shitstorm that will going down on them.

Suspend/resume is really strange because it's already there. You can suspend freaking games when you launch another app. Don't know why it's so hard to allow it when the PS4 is off/standby modus.

Ya, I hate added input. I wonder if you have some objective measure of input latency you can notice or accept based on a genre of game. Most games are not twitch shooters and extra tens of ms isn't going to be noticeable.

People used to make the same argument against Internet MP. All that "lag" is going to kill the feel you have with lan play. Look how that has turned out... That was an added 50+ms to twitch shooters.

Isn't it streaming the video as well to the other player? If it's only an added 10ms , I'd be pretty impressed. Once you start getting into the 100ms territory, life becomes pretty poor for a lot of games. Not all though. And of course person dependent

I don't think they'll introduce folders either - as in "create your folder":Unless they put a cap and limit which folder does what - and I can already hear the bitching about that too. "Folders" have become a buzzword of sorts. The PS4 already has folders btw. They are just defined, and out of your control. The Xbox One has "tiles" - they act as folders in a way too.

That's why improving the Library FOLDER seems more reasonable, less time consuming dev wise, more functional and it's releasing with 2.0. Sort your games content by: (genre? favorites?) PS+ games sent directly to that folder without downloading, sort Apps etc..... It's one BIG folder after all. I have 23 games on mine w/ ShareFactory and E3 app. Don't know why the Destiny Beta is still showing there - with no ability to delete (another thing that should be fixed).

What I suggest is that they change that stupid logo into something more flashy/eye candy - the more customizable the better w/ preview like apps and games have. So in a way, we already have folders: the Capture Gallery folder - another folder that could do with a rename, The TV/Videos folder, and the "Library folder" which should just simply be renamed to "Games and Apps Folder".

The Library Folder is simply a massive folder, and sorting should help it a lot (from the pics released - it looks similar to PS Store sorting U.I wise).

DLNA is not something that's hard to implement - that's a given it's coming sooner or later - same as the small friend notifications and U.I improvements. Suspend/Resume I can see why it would take more time but they have talked about it since launch - so they had it in the works/planned even then. You don't talk about a feature unless someone said it's possible with a high certainty of doubt. It's already on Vita too. But yeah they should get heat if they don't give us a time-frame by the end of 2015 for sure.

My most anticipated/wanted feature is having the ability to chose which apps/games appear when I boot up since its done in a way that shows up as "most recently used"

Suspend/resume is a low-level operating system function, and must be done just so, in coordination with the secondary ARM processor that handles downloads and etc. during standby.

It's the latter that seems likely to complicate things. You've got a second processor that might be messing about on the hard drive so that things are magically different when the system resumes? Neat!

I'm sure Sony properly defined an API for the operating system to notify games/ apps that they need to go quiescent / stow things for shutdown. If they get the low level stuff sorted, all games should handle it fine.

As far as pausing downloads, that's small enough that I wouldn't be surprised if that's one of the things to be revealed about Masamune.

I own a Vita, and I own a PS4, and I've never even attempted remote play. I already know I won't enjoy it, even in the same house. I know a lot of people will find it acceptable though, regardless of what I think.

For me the absolute maximum amount of input lag I'm willing to deal with is 30ms, and my TV already provides that. I've played on TVs with 60ms, and I could definitely tell, although I wouldn't call it an unplayable experience.

Your MP comparison is not relevant. Your inputs in a game like COD are still registered instantly. The other players are what's lagging behind, so it's not comparable.

That exaggeration eh?

Anyway I dont know why there are a lot of Xbox update comparisons here as this thread is only for 2.0

To be honest 2.0 update seems bigger than all of MS updates till now considering not everything is fully confirmed, with shareplay being very important

You will notice most Xbox One updates mostly contain very tiny or not particularly game changing or useful, The DLNA, Custom Background, Suspend and Resume will be the important ones in an update among a load of tiny changes

BTW, It seems the Xbox doesn't allow for music to be stored on the HDD and operates basically the same way Sony has said to be implemented yet everyone is complaining like Sony are doing absolutely nothing

The exaggeration of complaints and twist of words to suit an agenda on neogaf is on another level

Utter bollocks. They've added something significant each round apart from August. On top of this they've included smaller but neat things (Smartglass improvements, TV broadcasting to mobile devices)

I don't know why some of you get hung up on the OS devs likely being based in Japan.
Being japanese is not an issue here, but developing at sub-glacial speeds certainly is.

I think they attribute the Software Development pace to it being developed in Japan.

It's not that they're Japanese, it's just Sony Japan are really out of touch with their big markets..

It's possible Japanese people don't care about folders etc as much as us..

It very much depends.

I've been experimenting lately with playing PC games off an Amazon system using Steam streaming. It's early days, I haven't tested a very wide range of games, but I've been happily able to play everything I've tried sofar except Quake Live. Elite is fine for example. I don't notice lag at least. Steam reports an input latency typically in the single-digit milliseconds. I am perhaps lucky in that the Amazon datacenter I'm using is in the same city as I am, but it's not like it's next door.

It is a ymmv thing, it does depend on the network and network locality between you and the remote system, but there are 'some ways' where you can stream many types of game well. I think.

Note that there is a difference between a data center and peer to peer play, though. I just want to check it out, the feature sounds really cool!

The usual timeframe is Monday evening / early Tuesday, with a solid release time early Monday. Bigger releases might get more teasing on Thursday or Friday if they haven't announced all the features yet (which sounds like it's the case here).

Jesus Sony just throw people a bone here. Give a release MONTH or something if you won't commit to a day or week. This is ridiculous.

I wouldn't be surprised if the recent DriveClub issues have had a small impact on the release timing. If 2.0 causes new issues it will make things even more complicated, and if conversely there is anything they can add last minute to help solve or troubleshoot they may delay for that. Or they are waiting until they can test their FW with the Golds of big titles like CoD and GTAV

I wouldn't be surprised if the recent DriveClub issues have had a small impact on the release timing.
The issues with DriveClub are with the game's servers, though, not with the console's firmware.
So, unless they're overly cautious with their customers who have already bought DC and have not asked for a refund yet (what's that, honestly? 5% of total PS4 owners?), I wouldn't be surprised if they don't give a fuck at all.

They probably like seeing people complain about this as much as I do, so this probably won't happen. ;)

You should try it maybe you'll like it. It's definitely infinitely more playable than the POS that is the Kinect 2.0 as far as lag goes. But you probably find Kinect games unplayable too based on your preferences.

The main problem I have with remote play (besides lack of physical l2/3,r2/3) is how poorly implemented it is with the Vita. As an app I think it's useless. As soon as you turn the Vita on it should know (if previously paired) that the PS4 is turned on and immediately ask if you want to switch to remote play. It should take no longer than 5 secs to be in control of the PS4.

Yes I did clearly point out the significant changes they put, but amongst them are very many tiny and insignificant, hence the use of the word MOSTLY

I agree. Don't expect them to ever fix that though. Sony has never been one to be able to implement user friendly UI and things like that.

Doesn't matter what perspective they came in with, Sony revealed the PS4 on Feb 20th, 2013 and touted the suspend and resume feature. Almost 2 years after that and almost a year after launch and the feature is still not here. People are understandably upset.

It clearly does matter the perspective they came with, or they wouldn't have made it very clear to PS customers at first

Sony wants to concentrate on games and gaming related features mostly importantly and that is clearly showing

It doesnt matter how far back to was touted, it would be a different sceneario if suspend and resume never made it on the PS4 at all, but it was never promised at launch or at any set time but it was promised to be on the PS4 which it might be

At the end of the day you dont have understandable upset people but upset people making assumptions and throwing accusations without knowing how things at Sony OS division works

I'm glad more people are seeing that having a Japanese OS team just makes no sense at all and that the team just cant cut it. I used to complain all the time and get shit for it. But now that the PS4 is attracting ex-Xbox fans and more casuals into the userbase, instead of simply diehard PS fans, I think thats starting to change. It can only be a good thing if Sony sees more and more people criticize their processes.

Like I've always said, blind praise does nothing to improve what you love. If you love Playstation give praise where its due, but more importantly call out the shit for what it is so that we make it clear when something is unacceptable.

PS online reliability? Shit
DC situation? Shit, that the game is awesome is irrelevant
How they handle firmware? Complete shit

This. Sony just needs to hire a American OS team who knows what they're doing.

I'm guessing that the music player won't automatically mute the in-game audio, would that have to be added in development like the 360? It's going to be like the PC where you just mute the game music yourself in the options. If that is the case then it's going to be pretty shit with games without this option, like Destiny for example.

I agree. This option needs to be something similar like Tekken Tag Tournament 2 (from Tekken Tunes mode) in which you can completely replace the in-game soundtracks with your own soundtracks.

My prediction:

If we don't hear about the update in the next 24 hours, it's next week. I don't think it will land any later than next week though.

I don't necessarily blame Sony, although it should have been a feature from the start with better implementation (if it is true). A game like Destiny should always have the option to mute the music, it has a serious lack of options full stop.

I assume it's because, unlike MS, they don't have an army of OS developers.
I assume that, due to the vast numbers of people who bitched about the regular PS3 firmware updates, Sony decided to listen to the people and so dramatically scaled back on the resources allocated to firmware updates.

Unfortunately, the people are dumb :(
