PS5 Pro Has Reignited my enjoyment of Consoles

And once you're done with the half dozen PS5 games that have a marked improvement on the Pro? It's back to business as usual. There's always a high that comes with getting a new toy. But like always with consoles, once you've finished those handful of games that exist only on console, you'll most likely be back to PC. This is what has happened to me for over a decade now. I buy new console, am amazed by its ease of use and comfort but the limited choice and closed down architecture just turns me off eventually. PS5 Pro doesn't solve PS5's big problems. It wasn't performance. PS5 performance was fine. It's the lack of choice and the anti-consumer pricing of paid online and games.

Having to use my keyboard and mouse is the compromise I've had to make, but since it is a PC I still am using it for other things so I do always have my mouse and keyboard near by. Is it unsexy and combersome to some? Probably. In game, it's very rare I've ever have to constantly whip out my keyboard and mouse if I'm using a controller, and I've exclusively used a controller to play games on my PC since I built it.

I'm sure the PS5 Pro makes games look and run a lot better now, and for people that want that convenience of a console but still want something powerful then it's the thing to buy right now.

For someone like you that does have a very beefy PC that can play games at 4K120fps I couldn't justify that "convenience" over the pure gaming fidelty you're getting.
Also knowing virtually all these new Sony games keep coming to PC means I really have no incentive to buy a PS5.
I have a beefy PC. What I get from the Pro has nearly matched the rig (though there are still a few oddballs like Alan Wake 2 and Cyberpunk that are many times better on PC). The Pro has elevated the playing field though, no question about it.

"Lack of choice"...

What lack of choice? And yes, performance was an issue, hence why they chose to focus on a machine that improves both fidelity and performance. It's biggest "problem" is that it's had to deal with a pandemic that kneecapped its release schedule. Paying for online? Well, that's not a PS5 exclusive issue and it shouldn't have to shoulder that blame nor any industry consistent problems.

As of right now, the Pro has provided another option to enjoy games, and no, it's not going to just drop into obscurity either. This isn't just a mid-gen upgrade, it has put consoles on the map as far as AI goes and the PS6 and whatever next Xbox release will benefit greatly as a result. In fact, so will PC.

It's a fantastic hardware that blurs the line between consoles and high end PCs.

People will say anything to justify Sony bending them over and shoving an overpriced console - that they couldn’t buy without credit - onto them

What do you mean what lack of choice? The fact that the console is extremely locked down. There is no way to get any kind of homebrew or the like running on it. You are locked to a single digital store in which games are heinously overpriced. You are locked to a single online service which is locked behind an extremely greedy pay wall. I feel like a walking wallet every time I boot up my PS5. The experience is so monetized. I am tired of it.

Performance isn't why Sony made the PS5 Pro. The same way Apple and Samsung don't create their Ultra phones because their lower end models are bad. They do so because the higher end models are sold with significantly higher profit margins. PS5 Pro is that. Yet another way for Sony to reap higher profit margins on hardware. It's a model they took from phone manufacturers. The fact that a PS5 "Pro" does not even come with a disc drive, whereas a used PS5 for $400 does, is all I need to never advice anyone to get the former over the latter. Unless you really, really want to give Sony money.

This is where I can't follow. So you bought a PS5 Pro to play games that probably already run amazingly on your PC, but the true next gen games like Alan Wake and Cyberpunk are better played on your PC anyways. Console players are still beggging Rockstar to throw a bone and give RDR2 a 60fps patch. I've already played the game at 4k100fps.

Again, I understand the convenience. I was a console gamer my whole life up until 3 years ago when I finally built my PC. The freedom of control I have over my games and my game experience has more value to me now.

The Pro exists for multiple reasons and one of them is exactly as I stated. Sorry if that doesn't jive, but that's the way this works. Of course they're after profit margins, it's called business. But, by providing another option to their fans, that business will elevate. It's exactly why other companies do stuff like it.

As to the rest of that, you know what the best solution is? Not to give Sony your money.

I mean, you do you, others will do them. That's the great thing about choices. I've had some form of high-end PC for the past 12 years and have always had consoles sitting right alongside them. Works just fine.

It’s great. The hate campaign is so strong online that I doubt it will be seen as success.
Even my 10yo nephew who got ps1,2,3,4 asked me if I got the pro and then proceeded to shit on my for spending 1000€ on w console repeating exactly the same dumb points influencers regurgitate.
Honestly, that’s a very responsible 10-year-old. You should be proud.

Yes there is alot of discourse mostly coming from the price as I mentioned.

Funny thing is these same people who are upset about how much it costs will be moaning that the next gen isn't "next gen" enough compared to their 7090 GPU.

The discourse is set so next gen Sony will likely launch a relatively underpowered but cost efficient console again.

Things cost money and £450 4 years ago is not the same as £450 now (it's more).

It's just not very "cool" according to YouTubers.
And the same YouTubers preordered 3 pros, limited editions and controllers.
They are just spewing populist hate because it sells more views. Shame it’s so broad and people are so sheepy

Yeah very responsible to be cheap little asshole who repeats something a YouTuber said. 0 imagination.
He is so brainwashed he “collects” PlayStations but never really plays them. He is a 10yo who collects retro console but don’t know why.
Maybe one day he will understand that 700$ is not much for a grown working person.
I didn’t got ps5 pro because I am irresponsible with my money. Ingot it because I wanted it and I don’t pretend 1000$ will kill my budget like YouTubers do. They like to appear poor for their audiences for free empathy points.
And I am not a rich guy. I am just a normal person.

Thoroughly enjoying it. Started Dead island 2 for the 1st time and it looks great and hasnt skipped a beat.
Have no idea how it was on the PS5.

PSSR is only going to get better and the PS6 will be ready for it.

Looking forward to the GT7 update. Some games have beat native 4k using pssr so i see no reason why it cant do the same here.

I kinda feel bad for your nephew. Not because of being influened by Youtubers. But because of an uncle that is seemingly incapable of understanding why a 10 year old finds the prospects of a console costing almost $1000 very bad news.

Who the hell even calls their 10 year old nephew "cheap little asshole" anyways? Fuck off.

My exact thoughts. Shit is almost surreal.

I have a 4 year old niece and the day that she decides to go against blind consumerism (whether it is through an 'influencer' or not) will be the day I am a very happy and proud uncle.

Oh yeah feel bad for him.
I am the uncle who gave him ps3,ps4, steam deck, laptop and ton of games. I am such a bad uncle.
We just finished Astro bot speed runs too to unlock all characters.

Of course you can choose to live in your world where I am some monster.
Explained him that influencers only pretend it’s expensive to them to garner more views. I’ve bought it because I have a good job and he will for sure be able to get stuff when he will be working too. He understands.

But at the same time let’s be fucking honest here. 700-1000$ would be multiple salaries for me 15 years ago. Now it’s a part of one salary. Minimum wage is more that. Ps5 pro in Poland and it used to be you. Wedged like 5 minimum wages for ps3. Times change.
I honestly don’t believe it’s expensive while fucking series x is 600 with 2tb drive what a joke

I try to explain this to PCfats but they just don't get it.

I got a PS5 in early 2021 and decided just to play all "TV games" on that and it's been great. I sitll have a PC and I play stuff like XCOM on it but I'm not hooking up a PC to a TV again and navigating with a mouse and keyboard.

Seems like you can barely string together a coherent sentence so I'm not surprised that you think you're not in the wrong here. It's not about whether you can or can't purchase something, it's about whether you should. I'd explain it to you but your 10 year old nephew seems to get the gist of this so I'll leave it up to him.

I wrote this on my phone while taking a shit and English is not my native language. Iphone fucking sucks for typing if you have 2 languages for autocorrect. It is what it is.
So fuck you.
Nephew might have a good idea to not splurge on expensive things but also he is a hypocrite for reciting what he heard from influencers online without a 2nd thought. That's the problem

Last time that was the case was 3080 at launch, founders edition was 700$... 4080 was like 1200....

Congrats. I understand the sentiment mostly because I felt the same way when I got Xbox One X in 2017. I barely played anything until that November and then I got pulled back into the gaming big time.

Happy you got out of the dynamic resolution hell, being able to play at actual 4K is great for sure.

How is he more responsible when he has all the other consoles that when you add them all up in value, it exceeds the PS5 cost? Sounds like a spoiled kid with parents who're afraid to say no to their kid.

As for the OP, glad to see you're enjoying your purchase. I really do like the idea of mid gen refreshes, which are necessary esp as tech advances at a rapid pace.

One just said PS5 Pro owners got bent over by Sony who shoved the overpriced console (that said owners couldn't afford, for some reason) onto their asses.. a sentiment shared by some known individuals liking that post.
All in response to a factually correct sentence, at that.

It says more than a thousand words really.

These new generations start off great, but then developers start pushing graphics too far at the expense of performance.

As long as that trend continues, Pro models will stay the way to go. The games look like they want them to look for the mass market on the base unit, but run the way WE want on the Pro models.

Always a great feeling to unbox and fire up new tech! Love it.
I'll probably get one for Death Stranding 2 / Ghost of tsushima sequel whenever the first of those drops, then sell it when those are done.
Glad to hear reports of less coil whine in this as well!
My OG ps5 had lots of it.

More like there is a select few GAF PC gamers here telling you that the value proposition isn't there, while also telling you how great a 4090 is. That's where we are.

Besides, none of those people could build a system for $700 that matches the Pro, so that's also where we are.
