PSN, Battlenet, Riot, and others DDOSed; PSN returning lightly toasted with butter

It's not the same thing.

Apparently this is going to have to be repeated multiple times every page.

No shit it's different but you're telling me Sony never entertained the idea that someone could ddos them and shut PSN down? After the hack you would think that they would have went and planned and prepared for every possible situation including a ddos attack. Yes it's different but when you're examining your security for your service you probably want to look at all possibilities so that you don't have any downtime or at least a drastically reduced downtime in the future be they hacks, ddos attacks, etc.

This makes it sound like you think ms are paying these guys to give sony bad rep. xbox live has always been more stable then psn through its entire life cycle, servers are microsofts bread and butter so it's not surprising.

Last gen ppl could accept that because multiplayer was free on ps3 , but this time now users are paying they have a lot higher expectations.

what? never said anything like that and this has nothing to do with stability. PSN is much more stable now since plus has been around. All im saying is this seems liek a fanboy console war tantrum. The dude released a statement praising MS for its security and bashing sony when there is no security threat. a DDoS has nothing to do with security and nothing to do with Multiplayer stability. it might be a be harder to perform a DDoS on live but it can be done .

You know while I hate the pieces of shit doing this I have to agree. Sony should have actually oh I dunno upgrade their shit and be prepared after the 2011 hacks. It's not a surprise that Sony for some reason has been the target of groups as far back as then due to things they did. Yet it seems that Sony hasn't been prepared at all. If even some of the stuff they say Sony has continued to allow happen security wise is true then that is just bullshit on Sony's end and uncalled for.

Say what you want about the shit Microsoft pulled you can't deny that live stands up against this shit when everyone else folds faster then TNA wrestling burns through money. It's just nuts.

So what about Blizzard and other providers going down from their attacks?

People saying this will affect PS4 sales are taking this way too far, only a very small percentage of people even know this is going on. Plus every single website and online system is vulnerable to this, it's not Sony's fault.

Are people seriously talking about sales right now?

Most people dont even know what this stuff is or anything about it.
It has been covered on all major networks in the US. People most definitely have heard about it. Those in the market for a new console may opt for the one not associated with successful network disruption, and given that we are entering the buying season, this could definitely sway people towards an Xbox if they were undecided on which to purchase.

Well isn't this a coincidence or is it? Next week the Xbox One officially launches here and now PSN is getting hammered again? Looking at MS' track record (netscape anyone?) I seriously wonder if this is JUST a coincidence

Its a waiting game. These people are gonna get caught especially after the bomb threat. We just have to wait for the FBI to get the permits. Lizardsquad is just playing with a ticking timebomb.

Mitigating or outright nullifying DDoS attacks at the network or application layer isn't a novel or obscure concept. Frankly I'm surprised a company the size of Sony is struggling so much with this.

Also it sucks. I forgot to pre-load First Light. :(

The average consumer doesn't care why it's happening, only that they are paying money so it should be working. I think word of mouth is spreading quickly especially with the stupid ISIS claims e.t.c which some media outlets picked up on, so I do think it could have affects.

Still it's only been 48 hrs so it's still early days.

Well it did make it to the news, although it was more about the bomb threat to the plane. They did mention that PSN was having outage issues though.

I'm sure they did. That doesn't mean they are impervious to large-scale DDOS attacks.

Same stands for them too. They and anyone out there should plan for these situations. It's a sad reality that they have to but they do. People are assholes. This is a prime example of people being assholes. It sucks that anyone has to worry about this shit. I hope they find these assholes and give them what they deserve. But you need to be prepared now days. That's just how it is sadly.

Man, some of these drive by posts are hilarious.
If you have no idea what a DDoS attack is stop making assumptions about it.

A DDoS attack is not something you just "prepare" for. Even the most brilliant network designs are going to choke at some point.

You see it, mitigate it however you can and divert the traffic. Which is what Sony is doing right now.

This isn't simple. This isn't something you throw money at. DDoS attacks get in the news because they're brutally effective.

In the same token, every large business should hire blackwater security forces in case of a terrorist attack?

This is just as ridiculous as the people trying to turn this into a console-wars thread. What incentive do these hackers have to align with MS? They attempt to take down nearly every large gaming service (Sony, Blizzard, etc), but for some reason side-step Xbox live because reasons?

b/c they are fanboys? this entire thing is stupid. the two main targets have been Activision blizzard and Sony and its no secret that there are xbox fanboys pissed off and worried that the Destiny Sony deal will make the ps4 pull that much farther ahead. I know its a bit out there but people who do this kind of shit are also a bit out there. If they wanted to take down live they probably could if they stopped focusing on others and took a bit more time to prepare instead of going after sony again and again.

All of this is speculation and these people have only given a BS reason for doing this I am letting my mind run wild

Just on a hunch, I checked NPDs when PSN was down during the hack of 2011 when it made worldwide news of being the largest personal data theft/hack ever, and PSN was down for several weeks.

Both months of the hack showed year over year growth (not nearly as much as 360 though) and was in line with other months of the normal 360/PS3 sales gap for the generation.

Of course I'm not a huge sales data guy so if I'm wrong let me know, but a quick glance says even the most major network outages don't seem to affect sales all that much.

lol "they shoulda planned better!!" I thought that phrase would only piss me off when games get delayed. now there's a new context for it

I could understand if this had been going on for a week, but many services have gone down in the past for a day or two. If the bomb threat hadn't been made, I don't think this story would be getting as much traffic.
