I really wish the people would get banned for the snarky comments. If it doesn't affect you, shut the fuck up. This is serious. Some hackers could very well have our address's, CC info, names, basically steal our identity if they want to.

I think we have every right to overreact.
I've already changed my name to Manuel Rodriguez and in the process of getting fake IDs.

Suffice to say, I'll only be using pre-paid cards from now on...

I see this message a lot (and other worse histrionics) and I don't agree. I mean honestly you're doing a lot more work to avoid a minor inconvenience down the line. AFIAK all credit cards, even debit cards now I believe, protect you from identity theft. If your information gets compromised you call up request new numbers and dispute charges if they are any. Information theft is the drawback of living in the information age but no one is losing all their money from it unless you are grossly negligent.

The best thing to do is to keep an eye on your bills and make sure that everything looks OK. In cases like these to feel safe just report the card stolen and get a new one.

Just FYI if someone starts posting porn pictures under my name it's not me. I only have porn videos.

Damn, this thread is a breeding ground for over reactions and fanboy comments. Even when they say there is no evidence of CC info being stolen people are freaking the fuck out. Take a deep breath and calm the fuck down. The only thing really stupid about this whole thing right now is how long Sony took to tell everyone.

On another note, lmfao CWF support for the greater good of gamers! What a crock of shit.
I'm sorry but when Sony doesn't tell us of the possibility of fraud for a week I believe I'm free to give up my trust in their company. :( Multiple gaffers in this and the previous thread have reported unauthorised card use during the last week, so this is pretty damn likely to be related. Also a lot of hackers will be very rich selling our details away.

Yeah its sony's responsibility to keep it safe but people in here saying its more there fault than the hackers fault... Get your life together.

I don't see how it isn't a 50/50 blame on hackers as well as Sony.

Sony should provide free credit monitoring servivce to every affected user, for at least a year.
Agreed. My school was hacked and so was my work. So I'm used to it. But they offer at least.

People in charge of Microsoft probably have the biggest shit eating grin right now. This surely will boost their sales and get them more customers.

Why should anyone feel bad for Sony? They got us into this mess with piss-poor security and then waited a fucking week to tell us about what happened. They're just as responsible as the hackers for this catastrophe.

How do you know thier security was so bad?

How many companies come under this sort of wide scale attack?

This only relates to PS3 accounts, right? I have a PSN acct tied to my PSP & I can't remember if I have any card details on it, could this affect me?
PSN in general, this effects anyone that has ever used it.

Anyone else think that sony is just being extra cautious about the CC info?

They cant say that it definitely wasn't stolen, only for a few days later to announce it was.
So they are probably just covering themselves until they know the whole picture
They've said as much. People overlooked that and included CC info with everything else.

Count me as another with a fraudulent charge. I was contacted by my bank who noticed a 4AM purchase yesterday from a UK (I'm in the US) computer parts supplier. The card was attached to my Sony account.

I'm now having to go through the process of replacing the card. F' Sony. They won't get another damn cent out of me.

So you use the same username everywhere? When the torrent comes out imma go lookin for you. ;0

Who knows what shit they could tie me to with e-mail addresses and stuff. Better to be on the side of caution.

It's not the hackers job to secure PSN. It's Sony's.
Are you for real?

You also don't blame the thieves who robbed your house because you didn't have a stronger lock?

Sony is to blame for a large part (not in the least for giving us this info so damn late), but the hackers are the ones doing the stealing and deserve to go to jail for this like this.

We are talking about 9 figures, easy. Sony's also going to have to answer why it waited so long to inform people (which it really hasn't even done yet). I mean, I absolutely know why they waited - if you have to disclose (based on a number of factors), then the costs go from thousands of dollars to millions instantly. Every company bends over backwards to find a way to not have to disclose.

The costs are ridiculous. Some states allow you to notify people electronically - thank goodness for Sony. Other states do not (unless they've changed their laws - constantly changing area of law). I am pretty sure Sony is going to just email everyone, offer credit services, and whatever remedies that state/country mandates, and pay any associated fines. The legal bills are gonna be huge :)

They didn't know at first, and instead of taking precautions, it's blowing up in their faces right now.

It is solely Sony's fault.

No evil hacker, only Sony. If that upsets you, deal with it.

I thought about it briefly, but nah, even with a fuck-up of monumental proportions I still can't part with my PS3. Uncharted 3, man.

The week gap to tell people something a lot of us on here had suspected from the moment the network went down globally is really quite mindboggling. As is the extent of the data the hackers could have had access to.

Sony couldn't have handled this situation much worse if they'd tried.

Thats like saying if your house gets broken into its half your fault. Eff all that noise.

Even there were no security measures in place thats another story but I am betting this was a fairly sophisticated attack.

Talk about overreacting.

My e-mail pw and PSN pw are the same exact thing and I'm not changing shit.
I don't ascribe to the "different password for every site/account" business (lack the necessary patience/memory), but it IS good practice to have a separate password for keystones like e-mail.

There's no reason to panic and cancel all your credit cards. Just put a fraud alert on your account and pay attention to your statements for anything suspicious.

Changing anything that used the same password would, however, be a phenomenal idea.

well, this sucks.

not gonna cancel my CC just yet (major PITA) but Ill be paying careful attention to the account the next couple days till Sony confirms just exactly what data they know was compromised.

sigh.

The only people to blame is Sony, and whoever stole the info (which we don't know who is). Geohot etc (unless they're holding that stolen info in their hands) have 0% of the blame.

I can understand being upset with Sony, but why be mad AT Sony? They weren't the problem.
Because it's their job to protect the integrity of the network? Anytime something like this happens, people will want a face to blame things on, and a multi-national company like Sony makes for an easier target than "hackers," whoever they are and wherever they may be. Now, if Sony could put a name and a face to this hacker and explain why their mad hacking skills were beyond anything that could be guarded against -- you know, because they're a wizard -- then we would be talking. As such, "Sony sucks for not preventing this" seems more relatable a position than "gosh, anonymous bad people sure do suck don't they!"

I don't know, I've seen hyperbolic GAF on a variety of topics but I think this takes the cake, didn't even waste any time either, started with the first reply rather than gradually building.

I'm not furious that this happened, but I am mad it took them a week to say anything about it. As I mentioned before, this clearly wasn't the average joe hacker trying to get some free PSN games and accidentally stumbling upon it, this was clearly someone who was snooping for that info.

I don't use a credit card, and the name registered to my main PSN account is Jack Daniels on 123 Boulevard Road Avenue so I'm also not affected much. Though I do have an account with my legitimate address on it...

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information.
Except someone probably already has all that sensitive information you fuckhead.

Uh, what? They're not resetting passwords? What's to prevent whoever got our logins to log in before we do and change password?

Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information. Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is our utmost priority.

Wait, so if I activated Portal 2 before it went down, does that mean my Steam password may have been compromised too?

Smells like class action lawsuit. I already see the lawyers that live for moments like this in the background... and trust me I am joining that one. The financial impact for Sony will be huge enough that any profits the PS3 has made will be cleared in one minute. =P
So you are going to be taking on Sony's Debt? How kind of you.

You are to blame if you know the thief is coming. Anyone who has a massive database of credit card numbers accessible by the Internet will be attacked repeatedly.

I am speechless at the posts telling people to calm down and quit being so angry at Sony.

Does Kaz have to force himself on you in the back of a pickup truck before some of you will say anything negative about your favorite corporation? Good lord...

While I'm at it (Not that I have to worry about this) but if...if lol!! PSN goes back online in my region, East Coast, North America. Before 12:00am midnight today Eastern time. I will raise each of the $200 to $500, respectively.
