PSP 2 weeks +, a quick survey

1. It's a powerful system. I don't have a big memory card, though so I don't make use of it besides playing games.

2. I play it on my couch. I don't have the time to play it elsewhere. It's not really a pick up and play portable. You need time for a whole race, or 40 minutes to make progress in Lumines or the time to get through all the load screens to play a couple of moves in Metal Gear Acid.

3. Not really. Lumines is the only game worth the price because its new, unique content. I've played a million racing games and I can play THPS at home. If I can play a game on a console, that's where I'd rather play it. That's why Metal Gear Ac!d is the only game I'd pretty much recommend outside of Lumines.

4. Lumines

5. None.

6. No surprises really.

7. It died on me while playing Metal Gear Acid, since then I keep it charged.

I know there is already a thread but I thought now we be a good time for a quick check of how PSP owners feel about their purchase after a couple weeks of ownership.

1. Does it stand up to all the hype? Any regrets?
It actually falls a little short, mainly with the screen. It's not a portable HDTV, it's not drool-worthy, it's just a good 24-bit active matrix LCD screen with a decent refresh rate.

2. Do you actually use it as a portable system? if not why?
It's mostly an at-home system since i don't have a case with a belt loop. i've got a few scratches on the screen due to the case, or more likely small particles that camped on the screen and rubbed against the screen when the PSP was removed from the pouch. It's too cumbersome to carry in pants. Also, i've been spending a good deal of time at home lately, and going out just to play PSP would be silly.

3. Do the games feel like they are worth the $40-$50 their asking? It just seems like a lot to spend on a portable game.
Forty dollars i can justify, depending on the game. Fifty dollars i cannot. i could try justifying the $50 price with the fact that i'm playing these games on a handheld, but it just doesn't work. There's PDA software companies that try the same thing -- tacking on a few dollars because there's is one of the few pieces of PDA software that does a specific task, but the thing is that they're selling to a different market, namely corporate users who won't balk at spending $70 at what should be a $50 piece of software because their job either reimburses them or makes the price such a small, laughable matter that it's not worth questioning. Until i know of a number of PSPers with whom i can play while i'm out, or a game is just phe-fuckin'-nomenal that have to have it, $40 is my limit. i'm actually waiting on Ridge Racers until i can get it for $30, but given the posts on how hot it is, i might cave and get it for $35.

4. What is your favorite game?
Wipeout Pure

5. How much extra did you spend on accessories? Which ones would you say are a necessity?
Didn't spend a penny on accessories. i'd rank a case or screen protector as the number one most necessary accessory, with a large MS Duo coming close second.

6. What was the most surprising feature for you? Something that didn't sell it for you already
Video playback. i watched Spiderman 2 on my bed while doing some sketches. It was th first movie i saw since Kill Bill Vol. 2. UMDs are a nice concept, but a bit too expensive for my tastes. i think with a 1GB MS Duo, i could finally catch up on some DVDs i've been meaning to see.

7. How is battery life?[/QUOTE]
Excellent actually. The lowest brightness setting is perfect for me, and with earphones, i can turn the volume to about 80% and listen comfortably. i use the PSP at home most of the time, so it's not a problem charging it when it runs low, though it usually doesn't run below two bars.

1. Does it stand up to all the hype? Any regrets?

I think it lived up to my personal hype, why everytime I pull the thing out and play it for a bit I have a fun time , the only regret is that is put off buying a new PC for another month.

2. Do you actually use it as a portable system? if not why? Yes, I bring it with me to freinds places and such, I don't bring it to work or anything but its handy to have at movies.

3. Do the games feel like they are worth the $40-$50 their asking? It just seems like a lot to spend on a portable game.
Depends what game you're talking, ask yourself if you feel justified paying 40-50 bucks for a game with graphics between PSone and dreamcast but with PS2 level special effects on a fantastic portable widescreen. Ridge Racer would be worth full price on a home console so I dont see why you'd pay any less to have it on the go. Darkstalkers and Wipout are decent games , worth atleast 30 bucks a piece, and Lumines is fantastic that it should be included with the system but it isn't so I gladly bought it for full price, again it'd be worth it on a home console.

4. What is your favorite game?
Toss up really, I like lumines and its addicting but Ridge Racer is also really good. You can't go wrong with either of them.

5. How much extra did you spend on accessories? Which ones would you say are a necessity? Nothing, I freind gave me a UMD case that holds 3 discs , but if you are really worried about your units safety I guess gettin ga hard case for the system and a screen gaurd would be up there. I plan to trade mine off 6 months from now so I"m not concerned.

6. What was the most surprising feature for you? Something that didn't sell it for you already

There wasn't anything really suprising about it for me, I knew of all of its features beforehand. I like its videoplayback alot.

7. How is battery life?

Consider that when the system was announced I did nothing but bitch about 3 -5 hours being too short, in reality for the everyday use of a portable its enough, it'll last the 20 minutes you may sit in a movie theatre , it'll last a couple hours in a car ride or short plane trip. REally its only set back is that it maxes out at just under 6 hours no matter what you do with it (if the screens in use) wich is less then an atypical trip overseas but if you have any luck booking flights, you can watch KRISWORLD on air singapore and see 100's of movies for the trip anyway. Also, can youreally see yourself using a portable for 6 hours straight? My hands would cramp up , they do after 1 hour of continued use.

So in Short the battery life is fine, a better battery would only allow me the privleage of charging th ething every week instead of every 3 days or so.

1. Does it stand up to all the hype? Any regrets?

Yes it does. Nope...Bought two systems and both had an horrible screen. I have already realized that this is normal.

2. Do you actually use it as a portable system? if not why?
No. I don't have the guts to play it outside home. I use it as a gaming system but not portable. Only played at home.

3. Do the games feel like they are worth the $40-$50 their asking? It just seems like a lot to spend on a portable game.

Yes

4. What is your favorite game?

Ridge Racer.

5. How much extra did you spend on accessories? Which ones would you say are a necessity?

I bought a screen protector...which I ended removing because it looked horrible. And a MS of 512 MB.

6. What was the most surprising feature for you? Something that didn't sell it for you already

IMG browsing.

7. How is battery life?

Better than expected. Enough for me.

7. How is battery life?

1. Absolutely. I couldn't be happier (unless they would hurry up and release even more games!)

2. Yeah. I use it abroad and at home. I haven't touched my PS2 or Gamecube since I picked it up. But its good while waiting at school or when I want to good games where I otherwise couldn't lug an entire system.

3. Some do, some don't. I wouldn't mind if some of the lesser offerings dropped to $30-$35. $40 is just about right, though, for the games that offer at least 10-20 hours of play. $50 would have to be a special case for me and, at the moment, EA sports games aren't it.

4. Hard call. I'll give the overall edge to Lumines, though...

5. I think I spent about $20. Add another $100+ for the 512 card, but I got that back in December before all the price drops.I just got a hard case, and a faceplate that came with four hard plastic sleeves for the games. These aren't necessities, but they're good to have.

6. I guess the comic-reading capability? I dunno, I did my research so I wasn't really surprised, but its just good all around.

7. Fine for me. I've only come close to running out (when not at home to charge) once, and that's only because a 2-3 hour session of Untold Legends undertaken by my girlfriend was followed up by about another hour of me playing with a friend (LAN Switch On, LAN Power Save Off).

And I still have no problems like dust, dead pixels, etc. My PSP is still in excellent condition.

1. Does it stand up to all the hype? Any regrets?

Guess it sort of depends whose hype you're talking about :) Met my expectations, and then some. No regrets.

2. Do you actually use it as a portable system? if not why?

I wouldn't know how to use it as anything other than a portable system

3. Do the games feel like they are worth the $40-$50 their asking? It just seems like a lot to spend on a portable game.

Haven't been interested in any of the $50 games yet, but all the $40 ones I bought have certainly been worth the asking price to me.

4. What is your favorite game?

Toss up between Wipeout Pure, Untold Legends and Lumines, although the latter two have been getting more play time.

5. How much extra did you spend on accessories? Which ones would you say are a necessity?

Nothing. Had a 512 MS Duo already. Might buy another 512 meg or 1 gig stick later on when prices drop a bit. Don't feel compelled to buy any other accessories at this time.

6. What was the most surprising feature for you? Something that didn't sell it for you already

Little things, really. The effectiveness of the battery management, game saves having their own splash screen and even music loop, the ability to hit the home button at any time during a game to get a quick look at the time and battery indicator - things like that.

7. How is battery life?

Fine.

1. hell yes! i am more amazed by it than i thought i would be!
2. yes i do, carry it with me everywhere exept the beach, well if i go to a rocky beach then i bring it with me.
3. well it wouldnt hurt if they where abit cheaper
4. so far its lumines
5. nothing so far
6. the sleep mode, i if i turn it off while playing the game starts up from where i left off, and if the batteri dies while in sleep mode the game still starts up from where i left of!!!!! HOLY SHIT that is awsome

LOVE PSP FOREVER i am sonys bitch for life now!

7. batteri life sucks but hey lets hope sony develops a new batteri that last longer

Use. Fucking. Headphones. It disgusts me people putting their poor PSP through that, not just usin' a god-damn headphones. As a semi-audiophile I am truly sad at this revelation of stupidity.

Anyway, to answer the question:

Does it live up to the hype? Any regrets?

Just barely. Well yes. I think I would have not purchased Twisted Metal:Head-On, because I can never get online to work and that really killed my motivation to play it.

1. Does it stand up to all the hype? Any regrets?

It demolishes my expectations, when I first played WipeOut I could not believe my eyes. The only regrets I have is not buying Lumines yet. :/

2. Do you actually use it as a portable system? if not why?

Yes, I have the system in sleep mode, so whenever there is a commercial on TV I boot it up and play a few laps, great! I bring it with me all the time, even when I visit the “can”. ;)

3. Do the games feel like they are worth the $40-$50 their asking? It just seems like a lot to spend on a portable game.

Well Wipeout is an awesome game, so for me its easily worth it. I haven’t played Twisted Metal as much as Wipeout, but the online matches have been really great so yeah, the two games I got with the system are worth the money.

4. What is your favorite game?

WipeOut Pure by far, but I still need to play Ridge Racer and Lumines.

5. How much extra did you spend on accessories? Which ones would you say are a necessity?

I have bought an extra Memory Stick, 512MB, then I got some new headphones. So about $124 o accessories, I feel the larger Memory Stick is really necessery in the long run.

6. What was the most surprising feature for you? Something that didn't sell it for you already

Its ability to play UMD movies, I didn’t think much of it at first, but once I saw Spiderman 2 I was blown away, so I think I will pick up a few UMD movies when more become available.
Also the little nifty things they put into the operating system, it makes this piece of hardware seem alien like, extremely well done!

7. How is battery life?

Fine, I charge the system about every two days.. I have never run out of juice, and the sleep mode rocks for not taking any large quantities of power.

1. Does it stand up to all the hype? Any regrets?
I wasnt that hyped, but quality of screen met my expectation, graphics and sound surpass them...and Ridge Racer is a better game than I thought.
Regrets? Only that I am probably not able to stand NDS graphics any longer although probably the NDS will have some great games.

2. Do you actually use it as a portable system? if not why?
Havent yet for lack of opportunity, but will for sure.

3. Do the games feel like they are worth the $40-$50 their asking? It just seems like a lot to spend on a portable game.
Ridge Racer sure is, I like and play it more than I played e.g. Burnout 2. And I think it easily looks as good, at least on the small screen.

4. What is your favorite game?
Ridge Racer. Got MGA and Chaos Tower but will sell both

5. How much extra did you spend on accessories? Which ones would you say are a necessity?
30 Euros on a PDair Leather case and some screen protectors. Will get USB cable, car adapter, maybe a 1GB DUO later.

6. What was the most surprising feature for you? Something that didn't sell it for you already
I love how I can turn the PSP on and instantly continue my game.

7. How is battery life?
I wouldnt say it doesnt bother me at all, but I think it is adequate. Still I loved how I could just forget about battery life on my GBA SP just reloading it from time to time. PSP needs you to think a little more about your battery. But even for an 8 hour flight it is OK as I dont usaully play 8 hours straight.

Amir0x, are you still having problems with Twisted Metal, even after they fixed the servers last week? I was disappointed that Online didn't work too, until they fixed the servers, and now it works perfectly. TM online is a blast to play, and if you haven't tried in the past week or so, give it a go. Works great now.

1. Does it stand up to all the hype? Any regrets?

None whatsoever. Probably the finest purchase I've ever made.

2. Do you actually use it as a portable system? if not why?

Yes. I take shuttle rides to work twice a week. It has also replaced my home consoles... I play my PSP more than my Xbox or PS2 (or GC, but then I never played that anyway).

3. Do the games feel like they are worth the $40-$50 their asking? It just seems like a lot to spend on a portable game.

For the quality of games you're getting, I'm happy to pay that much.

4. What is your favorite game?

Lumines

5. How much extra did you spend on accessories? Which ones would you say are a necessity?

$20 on a Logitech case, $50 on a 512 MB stick. Both are essential.

6. What was the most surprising feature for you? Something that didn't sell it for you already

Sleep mode

7. How is battery life?

Excellent.

7. How is battery life?

1. No regrets. Lives up to the hype.

2. Yes. I bring it to friends' houses, and I play all over the house with it.

3. The games I bought (Lumines, Wipeout: Pure, and Twisted Metal: Head On) are all worth the $40 that I paid.

4. Wipeout right now. Lumines when I first got it, and will probably be the longest-lived playtime wise.

5. I bought a memory stick for $90. I don't know if it's a necessity, though.

6. Photo-viewer. I didn't expect to use this to show off baby pictures, but it's perfect for that, with the huge screen.

7. Fine so far. I charge it at night, and when I am home of ofter play plugged in if I play for more than an hour or two.

6. What was the most surprising feature for you? Something that didn't sell it for you already

7. How is battery life?

1. For me yes. I don't necessarily think it's the best thing ever, but I like all the multimedia functions and the games are fun. The only thing I don't like (not really a regret) is that it isn't designed in an ergonomic way, so my hands get really sore after a while.

2. Yeah, I use it as a portable system. Play games on my breaks at work/lunch breaks and now that I picked up a 512 stick and USB cable I can listen to MP3s on the way to work and upload videos.

3. It seems a little expensive, but I've felt that way with most console games for a long time and have just dealt with it. I'd love it if games were cheaper and feel the prices of pretty much all games could go down a bit.

4. That's a tough one. When I bought the system, I couldn't find Lumines anywhere, so I bought Ridge Racer and I've been having a blast with that. However, I just bought Lumines yesterday because I managed to find it whle picking up some accessories and so far I can tell it's awesome. I'm not very good at it right now, but I can tell that once I figure all the little points out it's going to be an awesome game. So right now, Ridge Racers - possibly Lumines in a week or so.

5. Well, due to the cost of various things, I've spent over a hundred dollars already. The 512 mem stick cost the most ($118 CDN) and in order to find a USB cable, I had to buy one from a digital camera that had the same connector type for $20 as opposed to the one I saw on sale at EB for $7.99 before they all sold out. I'd say the USB cable and mem stick are a necessity if you want to get full use out of your PSP.

6. Since I read GAF all the time, there wasn't anything about it I found surprising, since I already knew pretty much everything there was to know about it before it came out. The most surprising feature to people who weren't in the know I talked to was the extra brightness mode when on AC power.

7. Not sure, really. My battery came only 20% charged and after about an hour or so of play at full brightness with close to full volume, the power light started blinking, so I connected it to AC to charge it. It didn't turn off on me while I was playing, so I don't know exactly how long it has lasted and since then I've been using it mostly on AC so I haven't had enough time on it off AC to drain the battery yet.

1. Does it stand up to all the hype? Any regrets?

Of course not. Nothing lives up to all the hype. Certainly no regrets, though - it's an incredibly nice piece of kit.

2. Do you actually use it as a portable system? if not why?

Absolutely. It gets a lot of use on the train in the mornings.

3. Do the games feel like they are worth the $40-$50 their asking? It just seems like a lot to spend on a portable game.

Importing gives different impressions of value. The games are not much more expensive than budget price PS2 titles bought locally - seems reasonable enough to me.

4. What is your favorite game?

Favourite (and only so far) is Ridge Racer.

5. How much extra did you spend on accessories? Which ones would you say are a necessity?

Best part of ÂŁ100 on a 1GB memory stick. Absolutely essential.

6. What was the most surprising feature for you? Something that didn't sell it for you already

Nothing - I knew what I was getting before I bought it. Dropping that much money on import hardware virtually requires it. :)

7. How is battery life?

Fucking five hours.

1. Does it stand up to all the hype? Any regrets?

Hell Yes, never been more satisfied with a system purchase.

2. Do you actually use it as a portable system? if not why?

Not a lot, mainly use it at home, but I do occasionally take it out to the Library. The main issue I have is the case, I want the leather case, so it'd be easier to use it as a MP3 player. Once I get that, I'm sure I'll bring it around with me a lot more.

3. Do the games feel like they are worth the $40-$50 their asking? It just seems like a lot to spend on a portable game.

Some are. Out of the 3 games I own, each of them are worth $40 (Lumines, RR, TM:HO).

4. What is your favorite game?

As of right now, Ridge Racers. Such an awesome game.

5. How much extra did you spend on accessories? Which ones would you say are a necessity?

I spent an extra $50 for a 256Mb Mem Stick. I'll get by with it till 1Gig prices drop, but for now 256Mb is good enough for me.

6. What was the most surprising feature for you? Something that didn't sell it for you already

I knew what I was getting in to when I bought it. No real surprises, just a feeling of satisfaction for getting such a nice product.

7. How is battery life?

It's good enough for me, I don't play handhelds for more than 2 hours at a time, so it isn't really an issue to me.

You can still maintain a connection with the outside world with headphones on, you just have to adjust volume properly when you know you might be addressed ;P

But seriously, the PSP audio is sooo good. I could never put it through the rings on those crap speakers, it needs headphones. It cries without headphones.

Well I have had it for over a week now

1. Does it stand up to all the hype? Any regrets?

Yes itÂ’s better than I thought. Just that I bought the thing at Gamestop, their extended warranty was shit.

2. Do you actually use it as a portable system? if not why?

yes, but its very limited due to the EXTREEMLY glossy screen. wtf, did Sony do all of its testing of this thing in a dark room. I find myself holding the thing at all sorts of weird angles trying to avoid my own reflection.

3. Do the games feel like they are worth the $40-$50 their asking? It just seems like a lot to spend on a portable game.

Untold Legends, so far, seems like it is worth it because its an original(well sort of) game. I still think all ports should be no greater than $30

4. What is your favorite game?

I only have 2, Untold Legends & Lumines. UL is getting all my play time. I want to like Lumines, but I find it a little odd that I have to turn to a dungeon crawl for my 15-30 minute play sessions. Lumines just takes too long to get going for me. Its more like a war of attrition than a test of skill to me. (I knew I should have just gotten RR)

5. How much extra did you spend on accessories? Which ones would you say are a necessity?

$0. I want to find something that is going to reduce glare

6. What was the most surprising feature for you? Something that didn't sell it for you already

Its been said before, but sleep mode is great! It allows me to sneak in a little gaming now and then without the usual setup time.

7. How is battery life?

Ok I've had the machine shut down on me once with intermittent play throughout the day. I was surprised that it did it without any warning.

8. What donÂ’t you like?(NEW)

glossy screen covering is terrible!

UMDs donÂ’t have even a cheap plastic sleeve included. Its a freaking portable system how about a mini case included ya cheap bastards.

The thing has such a slick look and feel I almost think its going to slip out of my hands like a bar of soap if I play a game like Street fighter III or something intense. ;)

7. How is battery life?

1. Disappointed that the games didnt really hold my attention too long, but no regrets because i returned the PSP to the store

2. Only left my house once

3. I had + how much I would like to pay for them: Ridge Racers $40, Lumines $30, Twisted Metal $20

4. Lumines

5. Hori PSP screen ($5?)

6. I was surprised how much I liked watching Spiderman 2 on UMD..

7. Battery life was good for me

1. Does it stand up to all the hype? Any regrets?

No,none at all. I actuallydidn't pay as much for it though, sold some games at GameRush and spent just over half of what it would have costs me normally. Ofcourse I've oly played two games thuis far,Ridgeracer which I own,and Lumines, which is cool but still not worth 40 dollars, its fun just not 40 dollars fun. I'm going to grab Untold Legends soon, thats the one game I've been eyeing lately. The movie, music, and picture playback is great, got a 512 MB card and am doing all sorts of things with it between plaing games. defintely worth the hype and I'm glad I own a PSP,totally.

2. Do you actually use it as a portable system? if not why?

I use it as a media player just abit more than playing games, mainly because I'm abit burnt out on Ridgeracer as of late. I plan to play alot more games on it as time goes on but portable gaming is going to be a second thought overall. Mainly because I'm on Live alot and have a ton of single player games on ther PS2 and Xbox ,so PSP gaming is fun but still limited for me.

3. Do the games feel like they are worth the $40-$50 their asking? It just seems like a lot to spend on a portable game.

No I feel the games are over priced. 30 is pushing it in my opinion. I'd like to see good price drops by the time summer arrives. Otherwise I'll go the cheap ass gamer route and just wait it out while I play games on the consoles. I can stare down any publisher (outside of Sega anyway) and call their bluff before giving in and paying 40 dollars for hand held games, heh.

4. What is your favorite game?

I've only played RR and Lumines,so far RidgeRacer gets mycall. Its got so many tracks and every race is always a kick in the ass Luminess is fun but puzzle games aren't my idea of spending alot of time with a portable. Racers and adventure games are what I bought the PSP for,Untold Legends and theone game I'm reallywaiting for,and is quite a qyas off-Infected,are the type of games I'm planing on buying for this handheld overall.

5. How much extra did you spend on accessories? Which ones would you say are a necessity?

Lets see-65 for a 512 MB card,10 for a carrying case,6 for a screen protector that was absolute garbage,10 for a mini USB cable to upload media onto the unit, what is that.....91 dollars overall? Abit pricey but in the end I've much enjoyed this little time killer so I'm content with the splurging here. The one necessity would be buying a larger memory card, youre cheating yourself if you don't buy something larger because this handheld can do so much that its a crime not to take advantage of its abilities.

6. What was the most surprising feature for you? Something that didn't sell it for you already

Probably the MP3 playback. Ofcourse I don't even own an MP3 player so I didn't know what to expect from its playback. I love the sound modes like boosting bass and jacking up the treble for pop based music. I've got a sweet home stereo system and honestly buying a MP3 player was always the last thing on my mind since I love to blast my music loud with the hair under my arms dancing. Surprsingly I've taken to the mp3 capability pretty well, never thought I'd be so atached to an mp3 player but I guess I was wrong, the PSP is a jack of all trades, sweet little thing it surely is,MY PRECIOUS,heh.

7. How is battery life?

I've gotten about 5 hours give or take with Ridge Racer. So off the top of my head though so I dunno, itseems right around 5 hours total. Mp3 playback and video viewing I have no idea But I don't sit and view or hear media for that long so I never drain a batery. Its quite prefect for me overall.

1. Does it stand up to all the hype? Any regrets?

2. Do you actually use it as a portable system? if not why?

3. Do the games feel like they are worth the $40-$50 their asking? It just seems like a lot to spend on a portable game.

4. What is your favorite game?

5. How much extra did you spend on accessories? Which ones would you say are a necessity?

6. What was the most surprising feature for you? Something that didn't sell it for you already

7. How is battery life?
Yes i believe so, not really although it is kinda expensive but the screen is very pretty.

Yes, on the go you can get a few games in is quite nice.

No, 40-50 does seem too expensive i'd like to see them be 30-40 or so that would be more reasonable. I imagine i'd buy very few psp games.

Right now, Ridge Racer

so far, $13 martin fields screen, $115 sandisk 1.0gb, and soon $20 logitech case about $150 on accessories. These would be the minimum with probably exception to the memory stick.

I guess since i didn't really get to play with it, the bulk feel of the psp is nice. While others like it to be light, it really feels its worth alot. The overall quality is impressive and the umd popping videos kinda seem ridiculous now since i'd never imagine bending my psp that way.

Pretty good depending on usage, most charges i get about 6:20. More life would be good, but its also pretty decent, i'm not sure how well it holds up when watching media tho.

Lets just say I got one on launch day and I am selling it already. I just dont need a portable..my game playing is done at home on a large tv.

The system is cool, but I wont need one unless I start traveelling more.

6. What was the most surprising feature for you? Something that didn't sell it for you already

7. How is battery life?

1. Yes it does! It's even better then expected.

2. No. I travel to work by car, so I have no possibility to play on the road.

3. I have no problem with spending 40$ for a game for a portable device. In our local Mediamarkt they are asking 45€ (~58$) for a certain GBA games! They also had a Yu-Gi-Oh for the GBA at 59.90€ (~78$). That's insane.
Regarding the PSP Games price tag: it could be lower, but the games I bought offer enough to be worth the price.

4. Actually it's Ridge Racer. I was expecting Metal Gear Acid to take the crown, but fuck is that game difficult.

5. I spent 12$ extra for a USB Loading/Data Cable Combo and a screen protector which will hopefully help with the reflections problem on the screen. That's all I need for now. Maybe I'll get a larger memory stick in the future, because saving replays in Ridge Racer takes a lot of space.

6. It's not exactly a feature, but it was the Wipeout Browser "hack". I really hope that Sony will release a full fledged browser (maybe a bit faster than the one in Wipeout) with bookmarks and so.

7. I think it's good, but as I don't use it on travel, it doesn't really bother me.

1. Does it stand up to all the hype? Any regrets?

After all the hype, the screen was kind of underwhelming, to be honest. I've seen PDA's with similar quality displays, and I was really lead to expect a greater leap over what was out there.

Other than that, it's tough to measure it against hype, but it meets most of my expectations. Some of the problems that I heard about the system weren't obvious until I experienced them first hand.

I'm thinking specifically of the ergonomic nightmare called the analog nub, the miserable load times on certain games, and the atrocious built in speakers.

I guess the nub is just great idea badly executed. I'd give up form factor for something more comfortable.

Load times are annoying. I wish the memory stick could function like the Xbox HD to help eliminate them. They've ruined games like Ape Escape & Tiger Woods that I might have otherwise found playable. Hopefully something can be done about this in the future.

There's really no excuse for those speakers on what's supposed to be a multimedia device. The DS costs $100 less and has speakers that are infinitely better. When I play Electroplankton, I don't need to use headphones if I want to share the music I'm making with a friend. I'm almost embarrassed to show friends the audio capibilities of the PSP, and it's a shame because the games themselves DO have great audio. It's the one aspect of the system that feels hopelessly cheap, imo. The idea that I have to use headphones to enjoy the audio in my games is absurd. If that's the case, why even include speakers?

Online with Twisted Metal was such a fiasco that I sold the game (I wasn't enjoying single player either). Apparently it's been fixed, but I'll have to wait for an appealing game with online features to find out for sure.

Screen / surface smudging has been a constant thorn in my side, even though I've had a sceen protector on from the moment I got the thing. The system never looks clean enough. :-/

On the software front, I'm bummed that there's no obvious Killer App yet. There's nothing that makes me WANT to play at home. I'm also disappointed by the slate of announced games at this point, though here's to hoping E3 will fix that.

I'd like the GUI to be more customizable (pink background for April?!) and I hope the firmware updates that have been rumored (web browser / email) come to light. I wish the whole video conversion process was less CPU intensive, but I guess there's no way around that unless a firmware update helps the PSP read more formats.

On the plus side, many of the things I feared from early hands on reports, like dead pixels, stuck square buttons, flying UMDs and too-short battery life never materialized for me.

2. Do you actually use it as a portable system? if not why?

Yeah, I use it exclusively as a portable system. Basically, since the PSP games are watered down / slightly enhanced versions of PS2 games, I have better games to play at home. I've played DS at home more than I've played PSP at home since I got my PSP, and I don't think that will change, though I tend to carry my PSP with me more than my DS because of the current DS game drought & the multimedia functions of the PSP.

On the downside, the PSP seems to react to sunlight like a vampire, so I might have to play indoors this summer.

3. Do the games feel like they are worth the $40-$50 their asking? It just seems like a lot to spend on a portable game.

Some are, some aren't like all games. Darkstalkers / Ridge Racer / Wipeout are the ones that I am happy that I purchased (out of 8 or so). This is based on the assumption that the extra tracks for Wipeout are as good as what we already have. The game has too few without the DLC.

I have no idea why Lumines is so beloved. I kind of regret purchasing that half-assed, unbalanced game.

The only $50 game I got was Tiger Woods & I sold that because the load times were awful. I have the DS one and prefer it because I can play a round in the time I'm on the train in the morning.

4. What is your favorite game?

Good - Darkstalkers / Ridge Racer / Wipeout are all good.

Average - Lumines / Untold Legends

Bad - Metal Gear Acid / Ape Escape / Tiger Woods / Twisted Metal /

5. How much extra did you spend on accessories? Which ones would you say are a necessity?

I bought a 512 MB & 1 GB memory stick, a screen protector, some UMD cases & the Logitech protector case. I'd say they're all pretty necessary.

6. What was the most surprising feature for you? Something that didn't sell it for you already.

I pretty much knew what I was getting into.

7. How is battery life?

It meets my needs. I've only noticed it get down to 1 bar a few times.

Just as good as the hype. I find myself reaching for the PSP over the PS2 because it's a stond alone gaming device. I just turn it on and play. With the PS2 I have to commit to the game because it takes over my TV, unless I use PIP (I do sometimes). With the PSP I tend to game while listening to a show on TV, or the news...whatever. I like that.

I use it sometimes outside the home, I went on vacation last week and brought it with me. I look for WiFi hot spots around town to game online...rarely.

1. Does it stand up to all the hype? Any regrets?
It had an awful lot of hype, and it seems to live up to all of it. No regrets at all, mainly because I got an almost perfect machine.

2. Do you actually use it as a portable system? if not why?
I mostly use it at home, but I still take it out on the train sometimes.

3. Do the games feel like they are worth the $40-$50 their asking? It just seems like a lot to spend on a portable game.
I guess so, although for games like THUG2, where one may own the console version already, it would be nice to have reduced prices. $50 for a "remix" is a bit much.

4. What is your favorite game?
Lumines.

5. How much extra did you spend on accessories? Which ones would you say are a necessity?
I just got a screen protector and 3 UMD cases. I don't use the protector, it's not necessary if you use the slipcase that came with it. UMD cases are a must though.

6. What was the most surprising feature for you? Something that didn't sell it for you already
Region free games. It certainly is nice being able to import US games.

7. How is battery life?
Better than expected. Only problem I have is with sleep mode. It varies depending on the game, unfortunately. Wipeout Pure really sucks the batteries in sleep mode :(

1. Does it stand up to all the hype? Any regrets?
It sure does. This is my 1st Sony product (video game wise) that I have purchased. I stayed away from PS1 *AND* PS2 ... If the only regret I had has to be the lack of quality control, I had to swap mine out 3 times (Broken Door and "X" button).

2. Do you actually use it as a portable system? if not why?
Yep. It comes around with me in my briefcase. I play on my breaks and downtime.

3. Do the games feel like they are worth the $40-$50 their asking? It just seems like a lot to spend on a portable game.
At $50 - HELL NO! - $40 I am all over it.

4. What is your favorite game?
Untold Legends

5. How much extra did you spend on accessories? Which ones would you say are a necessity?
1. Carry Case ($10), 2. EXiM Screen Protector ($15), 3. Face Armour ($10).

6. What was the most surprising feature for you? Something that didn't sell it for you already
I would have to say being able to import games and have no problems playing on US system.

7. How is battery life?
Shock and Awe! I am impressed and I am very surprised. Untold Legends will deplete it *VERY QUICKLY* ...

1. Does it stand up to all the hype? Any regrets?
Yes, it definately lives up to the hype. What is there not to like about it? Im not a grubby 5 year old so I dont need my equipment to be extremely durable. I have a hori protector and I'll get the logitech case, I have no problems with scratches.

2. Do you actually use it as a portable system? if not why?
Yes, I take it to work all the time.

3. Do the games feel like they are worth the $40-$50 their asking? It just seems like a lot to spend on a portable game.
It is a lot to spend on a portable game. I got two games and I'll bargain bin shop from now on.

4. What is your favorite game?
Lumines

5. How much extra did you spend on accessories? Which ones would you say are a necessity?
$100 on a 1GB card.
$5 on the Hori protector.

Both are a neccessity to maximize the potential of the system.

6. What was the most surprising feature for you? Something that didn't sell it for you already

I love being able to take all of media around with me. I like showing off funny movies, and having things to do on long car rides and trips.

7. How is battery life?

Its fine for me. I can't sit for 4 hours straight and play games. If Im sitting that long Im going to fall asleep or be doing something with my g/f. :lol

1. Does it stand up to all the hype? Any regrets?
No regrets, not a one

2. Do you actually use it as a portable system? if not why?
Surprisingly yes, at lunch, on the throne, on long distance trips it's an excuse for me to NOT drive..., recent flight to/from Vegas

3. Do the games feel like they are worth the $40-$50 their asking? It just seems like a lot to spend on a portable game.
$40? Yes... $50? No and godwilling I will own no $50 games ever.

4. What is your favorite game?
Untold Legends

5. How much extra did you spend on accessories? Which ones would you say are a necessity?
$40. Necessity? I don't know that any of them were a necessity but the Power Brick sure is f'n sweet.... the fact that the kit came with a car adapter as well as an AC adapter was just gravy. Whoops forgot about the 512MB card, add anothe $65 to that.

6. What was the most surprising feature for you? Something that didn't sell it for you already
Sleep mode

7. How is battery life?
Awesome, I have yet to run out of battery life(used it almost constantly in the airport, on the flight to salt lake city, and then from SLC to Vegas no problem), and now that I have the Power brick I'm definitely not concerned about it

1. Does it stand up to all the hype? Any regrets?
1. Not really. I don't use it near as much as I thought I would. I always told myself owning an Mp3 player would be cool, but I never use the damn thing and I hardly play Lumines anymore.

2. Do you actually use it as a portable system? if not why?
2. No. It's just not pick-up-and-play. I find my DS and much more my SP much easier to play on the go.

3. Do the games feel like they are worth the $40-$50 their asking? It just seems like a lot to spend on a portable game.
3. I felt like Lumines was worth the money spent, but that Ridge Racers was a let down for the price asked. (cue jokes on how I didnt pay for it).

4. What is your favorite game?
4. Lumines hands down. It's a great puzzle game was immersive music and visuals.

5. How much extra did you spend on accessories? Which ones would you say are a necessity?
5. I spent $70 of my own on a 512 stick. I think that if you own a PSP you'll need one.

6. What was the most surprising feature for you? Something that didn't sell it for you already
6. I didn't think the picture viewer would be as cool as it is. I actually use it! I've been able to show friends pictures of my pup!

7. How is battery life?
7. Good. I've never had to worry about the battery running out. Not yet, at least.

7. How is battery life?

1. Overhyped, but a cool adget regardless.
2. Yep, bring it to work for downtime between system upgrades
3. $50 is too much I got suckered into Tony Hawk, which is a sloppy port
4. Lumines or Wipeout Pure
5. I bought a case/screen cover/nub replacement/car charger/game holder combo for $15
5. I knew what it had so nothing, wish it had a tv out.

1. Does it stand up to all the hype? Any regrets?

More than not, yes. The screen was a major letdown, with the poor response time and dead/hot pixels.

2. Do you actually use it as a portable system? if not why?

Yes, more than any Gameboy so far.

3. Do the games feel like they are worth the $40-$50 their asking? It just seems like a lot to spend on a portable game.

I'd like to see them closer to $40 than $50, but for the most part I can't complain. Games like Ridge Racer and Wipeout Pure are totally complete and valid entries into their respective franchises.

4. What is your favorite game?

I really can't say, I'm enjoying Ridge Racer, Lumines, Mercury, and Metal Gear Acid almost all equally.

5. How much extra did you spend on accessories? Which ones would you say are a necessity?

$95 on a 1GB Mem Stick (should ship next week), $8 on an army surplus ammo bag to carry it around, and $2 for an Altoids sours tin to hold UMDs

6. What was the most surprising feature for you? Something that didn't sell it for you already

The web browser in Wipeout was a nice perk.

7. How is battery life?

I've only hit 50% batterylife once, and that was only due to long sessions of multiplayer Ridge Racers. But I haven't been away from a charger for an extended period of time, either. I'm not really worried about it.

1. Hype didn't seem stupid, so it pretty much delivered. Graphically game wise its abit more under PS2 then i originally expected, but the games look much nicer in motion then screens, and I imagine things will only get better over time.

2. I use it as my main MP3 player since my ipod died, and while its abit bigger then i'd like, its adaquate, and I use it on trains/busses quite abit too, its already had more use to me as an actual portable then the GBASP.

3. $50 no, i regret buying Tony Hawk. 40 is reasonably expensive, but as long as the games actually seem to stand up to console quality games rather then shitty inadaquate versions like previous handheld games were alot of the time, then 40 is fine. 50 for month old ports of currently $20 games is not acceptable though.

4. Lumines by far, I only just got RR and haven't put a large amount of time into it. Wipeout is good, but I think I think its lacking in tracks and has crap AI.

5. About $40-50, USB cable, screen protector are needed, as is a case really. A larger mem stick is needed too to pretty much use any of the mem stick related features too, i'll have a 1 gig stick soon. .

6. Good Wifi detection, easy as hell file transfer system.

7. Fine for me, good for MP3 playback, more then adaquate for most games, and easy to replace and upgradable battery means it'll most likely never be an issue for me.

I do think the system just simply isnt made to last though, its not built for portability. I've already had issues with my UMD drive catch, and the screen casing is too easy to scratch, and there needs to be a replacable front for the PSP available soon, I see the PSP being a system that i'll have to buy a second of reasonably soon. Analog Nub sucks too, doesn't seem good enough to be a full on control solution, rather a menu navigator.

Its been a week or so and i have to say i wasnt really hyped for it and i still feel that way.

i play it as much as my ds (very seldomly). Its just another portable after all.

1. Does it stand up to all the hype? Any regrets?
Nothing stands up to the hype. That being said, the system is powerful, looks gorgeous, and has some nice games. Though not at all worth $250.. and no portable game will ever be worth $50.

2. Do you actually use it as a portable system? if not why?
as opposed to what? it is a portable system.. anyone who tries to talk about it otherwise is overcompensating.

3. Do the games feel like they are worth the $40-$50 their asking? It just seems like a lot to spend on a portable game.
eh.. a grey area. NONE of the games are worth $50, and that is an undeniable fact. $40.. hmm.. Lumines is worth $40, though IMHO should not have been $40. MGA isn't worth the cost of packaing and manufacturing. Wipeout and Ridge Racer are good games, and I suppose are worth $40... but if it means that all handheld games will be $40 from now on then I still will slim down the buying.

4. What is your favorite game?
Lumines.

5. How much extra did you spend on accessories? Which ones would you say are a necessity?
$0. None are necessary. Well, a bigger memory stick if you plan on doing video or MP3.. if you don't plan on doing video or MP3 than you really don't even need a bigger memory stick.

6. What was the most surprising feature for you? Something that didn't sell it for you already
The fact that I can effectively war drive with it and scope out unencrypted hotspots.

7. How is battery life?
ok.

1. Does it stand up to all the hype? Any regrets?

No, not really. It is a very cool piece of hardware, one in which I drooled over when I picked it up (players in FFXI can attest to this). However, after renting most of the launch lineup that interested me... no, it's not worth the hype yet. Cool unit with a great screen (with ghosting all over though...take the good with the bad), and overall a good piece of tech. Speakers suck start a leaf blower though. And NO, I shouldn't have to use fucking Headphones any time I play it to have good quality sound. It DOES sound great with headphones, but the speakers are laughably bad.

2. Do you actually use it as a portable system? if not why?

I use it at work on my breaks now. That's about it.

3. Do the games feel like they are worth the $40-$50 their asking? It just seems like a lot to spend on a portable game.

Shit no. $30 tops for portable games. No portable game should EVER cost as much as a console game. EVER.

4. What is your favorite game?

Used to be Lumines, but I actually got pretty good with it... and playing through challenge mode over and over and over again from the start gets OLD. Needs a Shuffle mode badly or something. So, Ridge Racers would be mine I guess.

5. How much extra did you spend on accessories? Which ones would you say are a necessity?

No extras yet.

6. What was the most surprising feature for you? Something that didn't sell it for you already

Sleep feature is good for when I have to return from my break.

7. How is battery life?

Pretty good for me.

1. Does it stand up to all the hype? Any regrets?

Yes, my only regret is I don't have enough money to buy more games/big mem stick.

2. Do you actually use it as a portable system? if not why?

yeah I take it everywhere. I also play it at home pluged in.

3. Do the games feel like they are worth the $40-$50 their asking? It just seems like a lot to spend on a portable game.

the only game I have so far is wipeout. Its worth $40 to me. the best wipwout since XL and more downloadable tracks and ships on the way. Native online would of been nice and should be a standard feature in all future PSP games. (I do play online on xlink kai though)

4. What is your favorite game?

Wipeout. I've played a bit of ridge racers and untold legends. Wipeout is still the king.

5. How much extra did you spend on accessories? Which ones would you say are a necessity?

$0. I would say a bigger stick is the 1st thing to buy for it.

6. What was the most surprising feature for you? Something that didn't sell it for you already

photo-slide show. sounds crazy, but most people I have shown it to that are not gamers (parents, girls, ect) are gah-gah over the photo viewing.

7. How is battery life?

pretty happy with it. definatly takes a hit when playing with the wifi on xlink. there where alot of times I didn't plug it in and the batt would die halfway through the race. These where monster 4-5 hour sessions though.

1. Does it stand up to all the hype? Any regrets?

Yes for me,
No any hype on here was met with caution imo so I am more than pleased with the system the, screen is great. Well one slight regret I picked up Lumines and I'm just not getting into it as much as everyone else.

2. Do you actually use it as a portable system? if not why?
I use my portables mostly at home I like firing up MLB in between innings of Yankee games.

3. Do the games feel like they are worth the $40-$50 their asking? It just seems like a lot to spend on a portable game.

I don't like the $50 EA price tag I went with MLB baseball and how people here liked it, My 2nd favorite game I have 5.

4. What is your favorite game?
Metal gear Acid

5. How much extra did you spend on accessories? Which ones would you say are a necessity?
just bought a 512 memory stick

6. What was the most surprising feature for you?
how easy it is to play mp3 and dump photos in it, standby mode was a nice suprise also.

7. How is battery life?
thought it would be shorter so I am happy

1. Does it stand up to all the hype? Any regrets?

I didn't go nuts over its "sexiness" or anything like that, but I was impressed, and 3.5 months later I'm still impressed.

2. Do you actually use it as a portable system? if not why?

I use it mostly at home, but in a portable way (i.e. in bed, on the toilet, etc.). I don't commute that much, and I've only been on 2-3 trip since I got it, so most of my playtime is at home.

3. Do the games feel like they are worth the $40-$50 their asking? It just seems like a lot to spend on a portable game.

$40 is OK, since the game I've bought are near console-quality, IMO.

4. What is your favorite game?

I'd say Metal Gear Ac!d, with Ridge Racer being a very close 2nd.

5. How much extra did you spend on accessories? Which ones would you say are a necessity?

I bought a 512MB stick and a screen protector. The stick was a necessity, since at least half my PSP usage is watching videos.

6. What was the most surprising feature for you? Something that didn't sell it for you already?

The audio. It's really amazing to play a handheld game with such crisp audio.

7. How is battery life?

Not bad, and I usually plug it in when I'm at home so I rarely have the battery dying on me while playing a game.

1. Does it stand up to all the hype? Any regrets?

It does not stand up to the hype but I do not regret it either. I owned the DS and I must say, in its short amount of time, I've put in more hours into the PSP in just a couple of weeks than I had with the DS for three months. Not to compare but I'm finally happy with a portable now.

2. Do you actually use it as a portable system? if not why?

Of course.

3. Do the games feel like they are worth the $40-$50 their asking? It just seems like a lot to spend on a portable game.

If games are good, then they're worth the price. There are a lot of PSP releases that sound good but I don't want to pay anymore than $25 for. That means waiting it out for several months with a few games.

4. What is your favorite game?

Dynasty Warriors. Ridge Racer and Lumines are very close to that spot. Darkstalkers is dead last.

5. How much extra did you spend on accessories? Which ones would you say are a necessity?

$0. The necessity accessories like screen protectors are overblown. I've carried it around in my pocket, on the treadmill, and in the PSP soft case. Not a scratch on it. Cases aren't needed either; the one that comes with the PSP is perfect.

6. What was the most surprising feature for you? Something that didn't sell it for you already

The whole thing. I was expecting it to be merely above average, especially with some of the reviews websites were giving it.

7. How is battery life?

Fine for me.

I sold my PSP because it was giving me carpel tunnel syndrome.

My other disappointments were:
1. dead pixels
2. no protection for screen
3. too big for a portable
4. not enough original games

DS it is for me!

Is it just me, or does it seem like this guy has never owned a PSP? I could be wrong! :lol

I was going to put in a vote for "head up his ass," but you may be closer to the truth.

1. DS had em too. Should have gotten it replaced.
2. Same with DS. Buy screen protector
3. About the same size as a closed DS.
4. Fair complaint

I don't think you've owned a PSP. Quit bitching.

How dare you doubt gi^H^Hseismologist, of all people? I'm sure he could post a scan of his receipt. :D

1. Does it stand up to all the hype? Any regrets?
I love it, it's what I've beeng waitin for in a handheld. Not a let down at all.

2. Do you actually use it as a portable system? if not why?
I use the video function quite a bit. Sealab 2021 on my trainride is good stuff.

3. Do the games feel like they are worth the $40-$50 their asking? It just seems like a lot to spend on a portable game.
This is my only gripe, but I went into it knowing the price range, so I guess I'm somewhat ok with it. They're worth it in the same way console games are, which I think are too expensive as well.

4. What is your favorite game?
MLB

5. How much extra did you spend on accessories? Which ones would you say are a necessity?
Aside from a 512 memory stick, I have no accessories. The stick was $65.00 shipped.

6. What was the most surprising feature for you? Something that didn't sell it for you already
I didn't know how easy it was to convert video, that was a big plus.

7. How is battery life?
I play plugged in more often than not, but it seems to be fine when I commute.
