PSP battery life = FUCKING FIVE HOURS. Is this acceptable?

Q: How long does the PSP's battery last?

A: The short answer is that it depends on what you're doing. The longer answer is that Sony has stated that the battery should last around six hours. With simpler-looking games, like Lumines or Mahjong Fight Club, that definitely seems to be the case. But with more graphically intensive games, like Ridge Racers, the battery doesn't last quite as long. Based on our estimates and a few battery-draining tests, Ridge Racers seems to last somewhere between 90 minutes and three hours. Playing with the wireless networking switch flipped on will also further reduce your battery life. The system has an auto-sleep function that stops the wireless drain, but that switch is there for a reason. Turn it off when you're not using it.

How does everyone feel about this? This is not even with wireless networking turned on!
Do you think this will get better in the future, and if it doesnt are you still going to take the plunge?

Sony has stated that the more graphics intensive the game, the shorter the battery life. Its not like as the PSP goes on in life that games are not going to get more graphicly intensive. That only leads me to believe that this problem is going to get worse and worse. Who cares if I can play a 2D puzzle game for 6hrs?! I want to play ALL my games for the stated battery life, not just a select few.

Who really plays handhelds for more than five minutes at a time? 90 minutes is MORE than enough. Quite generous, actually.

Given the current state of the art in battery technology, that's just not possible.

It means I might have to buy an extra battery. And I'll also be plugging the PSP AC in whenever I'm near an outlet. The battery life is still better than the Game Gear, and I had no problems getting plenty of play time out of that system a decade ago.

Damn, Gamespot should fix that stupidity already. They are spreading FUD, plain and simple. Funny thing is, they are doing backflips over PSP in their editorial videos, that's how much they like it.

Ridge Racer works for more than 4h of constant gameplay on a full battery charge, with highest brightness setting.

...everyone, he's joking.
But he does bring up a pretty good point.
Ntrolls - "20 second load time???!! I only play my handheld one minute at a time!!!!!"
Ntrolls - "90 minute battery time - how am I supposed to play RPGs and the like???!!!!"

Hold on guys. I was writing out a post when the PSP started giving me head. I'm tellin ya, guys! It does everything!

Bah, Talkman's the killer ap...

The fact anyone is actually sticking up for the PSP's battery life is absolutely mind-boggling. I remember people complaining over the SP's 12.

Coworker played Ridge Racers for 4 hours straight last night, and he says he has like a 25% charge left. OH MY GOD the screen is SO BEAUTIFUL. Shit, my will to not buy one of these until the next model iteration is really slipping.

90 minutes.. That is freaken pathetic... It's trash.

I really do hope the psp burns in hell....

Was it pluged into the wall when he was playing it last night?...

The psp sucks more juice then it takes in when it's being charged and played at the same time...

Trash.

4hrs? That must be with some aftermarket modifications...wait, you sure its a PSP? I've seen folks confusing this with a portable DVD player...

Wow, and I thought 4 hours was short. 90 minutes is garbage, seriously. I don't know why any company would even bother putting out a product with less than 8 hours of gaming life. It's a sexy little machine with some great features, but 90 minutes?! Come on, now. Combined with the load times, that makes zero reason for me to bother with this product. Of course, that won't prevent me from pre-ordering a dozen to sell at ridiculously inflated prices.

* This is all assuming those estimates are true.

It's actually lower? Fuck.
Yup, it runs for about 1minute, then blows up killing the owner.
That's why the only people complaining are those with faulty units which failed to explode. :)

The worst part is that they lied so poorly as well - if they at least said 90minutes was with WiFi on, that would have given them some semblance of credibility (until other sites that actually ran the WiFi tests would post their results).

My PSP is TEH MAGIC.

I'm getting close to 5 hours playing Ridge - full back lit, and with sound (headphones - this is given as a tip to better batter life).

Why didn't Gamespot, you know, just play Ridge until the battery ran out?

Everyone = Sownyed regarding battery life. Especially me.

Wait, five hours suddenly became good because it's not 90 minutes? :lol

No, your PSP has bad pixels :D If it wasn't faulty, it would have exploded after 1minute, like I said.

My quess would be because they never actually ran any battery tests at all.

Your tag shall now be, "Sony's R&D guys are awesome! and I can prove it in three letters P-S-P!!"

"Wait, five hours suddenly became good because it's not 90 minutes?"

5 hours
on the brightest setting
with full, loud sound via head phones.

Put it on the lowest brighteness (still perfectly playable) and with lower music and you are gonna gain an extra hour or two.

Regardless - this is 5 hours of Ridge off ONE charged battery on a screen that will make you shit out all your vital organs.

Can i be on the go for more than 5 hours a day? YES - i can take a flight somewhere (tomorrow - for 12 hours) ! Hello extra batteries - i'm all set for 20 hours of full fat Ridge.

5 hours is still good considering:

UMD
Big screen with killer backlighting (low setting is brighter than the DS)
Power sucked by the internal components to create PS2-level gfx

Did you charge all your batteries yet DC? I charged my two batteries last night, so I'm good for 10 hours or so of my flight. I don't normally play games for the full flight anyway.

10 hours from Japan to the UK? :O

It would be impossible to get less than four hours in Ridge Racer, and 5-6 seems more likely depending on screen and sound settings. 90 minutes is NOT TRUE. And you are talking to a major PSP doubter before its release ... Sony delivered! It's awesome!

No, it was good to begin. 90 minutes = bad. 5 hrs = good. 8+ hrs = JIZZTASTIC NINTENDO WINS!!! Happy?

all my batteries were fully charged (the 3 new ones anyways) - so yeah, ready to go.

Will play DS a fair bit too.
