PSP battery life = FUCKING FIVE HOURS. Is this acceptable?

It's not a matter of playing a game for five hours at a time. It's just nice to have the leisure of, you know, forgetting to charge it one or two nights, and not have to worry about it dying on the ride to school or something. It sounds like a minor gripe, but I'm a forgetful motherfucker. I dunno. I'm getting one, looking forward to it quite a bit. Have it pre-ordered. Just seems like something that shouldn't be a factor to me, though.

This has probably been asked, but I missed it. How long does it take to recharge the batteries? 2h? 3h?
2.5 hrs or so, according to reports.

Will play DS a fair bit too.
Oh, you'll play more than a fair bit of the DS, my friend, since the PSP will be out of juice before takeoff.

2 hours and 20 minutes to be exact, my good sir.

"You people are crazy, I will be fine with only 1 battery. Of course I don't travel."

Well, i've had three long ass flights this year (all > 12 hours) and next year will be more of the same, so i want to cover my bases.

Have any of the flights you've been on provide an electrical outlet? I haven't been on a trans-atlantic/pacific flight in quite a while.

I don't understand it. Johnnyram has a PSP. DCharlie has a PSP. JackFrost has a PSP. Lots of others here have a PSP now...

...can one of you, for the sake of ultimate unlimited great justice, charge the PSP battery fully and test the thing with Ridge Racers running at max brightness and max volume until the battery dies?

And then do the opposite and see how long it lasts with 75 volume and min brightness? :(

Please? Pretty please? Do an intensive test just for me! Please! :D

People are purposely overlooking the issue that it it's not just a matter of if you would play a game for more then 90 minutes straight, but that you would have long bursts of gaming here or there and constantly having to worry if your PSP has been charged before you take it out while in public is annoying. I haven't charged my SP in months. I don't play it for long bouts often lately, but I do like knowing that each play won't require a charging afterwards just incase. My GBA SP is always ready and waiting to go. Does the PSP have that or do you have to worry about bringing along your charger always?

I don't think people are purposely choosing to overlook it. It's more along the line of whether or not you are willing to compromise a shorter battery life for great graphics or not. You'll either have to get into the habit of plugging in your PSP when you get home, buy extra batteries, or avoid the PSP at all cost. I think alot of ppl are willing to do 1 or 2. Hell, I come home each day and plug in my ipod and mobile right away. One more machine is not gonna make much difference.

I think you are overlooking the fact that the 90 minutes number was pulled out of someone's ass.

5-6 hours without a recharge isn't a big deal at all. I doubt most of the people bitching about the battery life would actually spend 5-6 hours a day playing PSP games on the go anyway, and it's not like there's a shortage of electrical outlets if you're playing at home. :p Are people just too damn lazy to plug the thing in to recharge before they go to bed? 'OMG I HAVE TO RECHARGE THE PSP MORE THAN ONCE A WEEK?! SONY IS TEH SUXX0RZ!! TRASH!!!11!' I mean, come on.

Everyone know this 90 minutes stuff is crap. How can there but should a difference of 90min to 3 hours when playing Ridge Racer from what they said? It is bull. Lots of people have stated they have got 4+ hours with max backlight and volume.

Hell, IGN when opening the box for the first time at a coffee shop and only playing on the residual charge got over 3 over playtime. This was 2 and a half hours of playing HSG and RR through wifi with 2 other people and then 30 minutes of music while writing the article. That is from like half the battery life. GS better get their act together.

yeah thats the way I see the battery life issue.

but anyways.....charging the psp's batteries...is it possible to do without them actually being in the psp and having the psp plugged to the wall? can I charge the batteries without the psp?

edit: i mean battery life issue in a general manner, not specifically with the psp or this 90 minute estimate crap.

Apparantely the battery needs to be in the PSP. They haven't made any plans to sell a seperate battery charger but I'm sure it'll come eventually...

"...can one of you, for the sake of ultimate unlimited great justice, charge the PSP battery fully and test the thing with Ridge Racers running at max brightness and max volume until the battery dies?"

i basically did this yesterday, but i'll do it again tonight, but it's just going to make all the PSP haters cry or cry foul or whatever.

Can someone prepare the extra large absorbant tissues?

It's kind of weird - given i apparently hate sony, surely i should be siding with the low battery life or trying to find something else to bitch about? Unless....

Extra note - my PSP was on for close to two hours Ridge yesterday, then switched off for 1 hours Halo, then switched back on for another three hours Ridge. So that 90 minutes contiuous use gets shot down... twice.

No and it's a bit of a pain.

This is why i wanted an official thread. Yes we know the battery life is low. Accept it and move on.

Indeed. And make it a sticky. Time for the official japanese launch thread to come down anyway? Got some freetime Amir0x?:)

You really shouldn't have to do multiple tests. We've gotten reports from lots of people with numbers that fall right into what Sony said. The only thing I really care about though is how much time is going to cut out with wireless, I think you said an hour or so once kaching?

Anywho, dunno what was up with Gamespot, but they've really become less and less of an interesting read for me lately.

Dang....since the PSP's batteries are replaceable, I an external/non-PSP charger better come out soon. That would make things much easier. How much do the replacement batteries cost anyways?

I said I expect it to roughly cut average play time in half. So if people are getting 4-5 hrs out of PSP battery with Ridge Racers using no Wifi, I expected something in the league of 2-3 hrs with Wifi.

But we got plenty of people who could actually confirm one way or another for us now. When they get around to it...

90min at minimun is fine with me..also if its easy to switch battery's then buying a second battery for quick swapping is another alternative but seriously..there arent lot of people that wont be around a electric outlet for more then an hour and half....if your in car then use a electric plug in.,etc

See that's why I love you DCharlie. You're like my light at the end of the tunnel!

I'll be making a huge US PSP Launch thread too. But this time it's going to be complete with so many bells and whistles that there won't be a single question left unanswered.

I wouldn't have it any other way. You definitely must spearhead that thread.

hope this will be extended to 6 to 8 hours un the near future
I'm optimistic of the possibility that Sony will issue a battery with much longer charge for a premium price in the future. I'd think that'd be a clever idea and an easy money maker for the company. Of course if this is possible remains to be seen.

Hopefully by then somebody will conclusively prove what the battery life is by videotaping the whole process over the 2-6 hours it takes for the battery to die :P

I'd hope so. The fact that there isn't one at launch is hopefully due to the quick change - remember a few months ago they were looking at ghostbusters style backpack batteries.

10 hours from Japan to the UK? :O

Its only an 11-12 hour direct flight from Japan to UK - they take a shortcut over Santa's house

No, selectively picking the lowest available battery life time reported anywhere despite the fact that board members with actual PSPs have said they get over three times that much gameplay from the same game before the battery dies is not acceptable. Looks like borderline trolling to me.

One thing for sure its got the worst battery of the 3. And looks like you have to buy another battery if you want to play it on the go for long. Hopefully Sony sorts out the battery because i am buying it for the wireless stuff. The extra battery thing is a way to rip off customers.

"Ridge Racers seems to last somewhere between 90 minutes and three hours."

That talk about vague...

"it lasts between 90 and 180 minutes."

I have to wonder what they did to have one "test" last twice as long as another.

Just so you know, the Wonderswan had better battery life than the GB series, as well as Square support, a better screen and cheap price, and it didn't help much. So battery life isn't the end of the world. At least every machine has a built-in lithium ion battery these days!

WonderSwan was another DC. Most people waited for the real deal. GBA. Which was superior in every way.
