PSP battery life = FUCKING FIVE HOURS. Is this acceptable?

Agreed. Also, people who believed the 90 minutes figure are either total tools or people who wouldn't buy a PSP unless it had a Nintendo logo on it.

Well there'll be Nintendo logos on PSP games soon enough. ;)

*ducks flying Mario figure - sees Nintendo horde - starts running the other way*

Five hours, eh... (and this is with the less demanding games)

Sony's really doing all they can to help sell the NDS, aren't they?

Are you completely fucking stupid?? 5 hrs of a game that is generations away in terms of graphics and sound than any handheld game ever made on a screen that is only ever descibed as completely awesome.

And anoop for ign got 5:45 from a multitude of games and mp3 playback.

It seems ok to me.

DOOD - you AREN'T listening now.

FIVE HOURS
FIVE HOURS
FIVE HOURS
....

Yes, it's hard to believe.

Here's IGN's account then, for starters:

Quote:
So we've at last played our way through a full battery charge cycle. In case you don't feel like counting, the battery died after about four hours and fourty-five minutes of five different games and one hour of MP3 play. We didn't use the WiFi features of the system at all during this time.

First of all, maybe you weren't reading. DCHarlie got 5 hours playing Ridge Racers. Can you comprehend that? 5-fucking-hours.

And honestly, you have to be the single most short-sighted individual on the planet to think it is Sony helping sell rival units. 5 hour battery life for near current gen visuals, unbelievable sound, a screen that shits all over any other handheld screen ever, a clarity that it simply unrivaled and about a billion other aspects make the PSP more than a little desirable.

Guys, you're talking to an Nbot, and one that has been overshadowed by other Nbots and is desperately trying to be relevant again.

4 hours with the screen at max brightness is fine with me.

Eventually Sony will come out with an 8-hour battery pack, but until then, you can just get two battery packs if you're going out on the road and you should be set for 8-9 hours.

You know, if you absolutely have to play gaming sessions longer than 4 or 5 hours straight, you've got problems deeper than the battery life.

Get a damn book. :P

hehe looking at the remarks from some of these people it's not as thought reading comprehension is their strong point, so the book would be useless :P

If anyone is genuinely concerned about the battery life, it likely has to do with the time allowed before they need a power outlet. ie, away from home for an extended period of time.

Anyway, considering what the PSP is capable of, five hours wouldn't personally bother me. Especially since I don't play outside of home.

True that, Soc.

And if all else fails, it's not like they can't plug it into the cigarette lighter via adaptor for a recharge.

VVV Aaaaand...nice how the mandatory number is an hour longer than what PSP ranks in at. :lol

To me I need a bare minimum of 6 hours to feel comfortable. I'm confident that when Sony or a third party offers a battery alternate that the average for high intensive games will be 6-7 hours, and that's a target I'd be extremely happy with.

Sony will have an 8-hour battery out within a year of the PSP's Japanese launch I think, if a third party doesn't beat them to the punch.

I have a question concerning handhelds in general. Is battery life inversely proportional to the number of times a machine is powered on/off? For instance, assume a fully charged PSP/DS battery lasts 6 hrs if someone plays a game for six hours straight. Would the life shorten to...say...4 hrs if you tend to play in half-hour bursts?

Thank you! first person in this thread to use common sense. Also if you reboot the system enough it increases the UMD access since it has to load every time.

Also if the intro FMV is streaming off the UMD just let that loop a few times and it would easily explain where the 90 minute figure comes from. Sony themselves stated 2hrs for UMD movie playing.

First of all, Sony stated 4-5 hours for movie playback. But thanks for playing the "How many times can I be wrong in one hour?" game.

Man, even as a Nintendo fan, I want seismologist banned. Is he always this annoying?

it can be annoying to get a dose of reality when your living in a fantasy world.
btw, I'm hardly a Nintendo fan since my only console is a Playstation2.

really? You have a link for that? Last time I said 4 hours for movies PSP fans had me convinced that it was 2hrs. I feel like no matter what I say you guys fight tooth and nail to prove that I'm wrong :D

I think the reason we go out of our way to prove you wrong is because you reak of some sort of profound Nintendo fanboyism.

Saying "I'm not biased because I own a PS2" is like saying "I'm not a homophobe because I have a gay friend!" It has no relevance on whether you are biased or a homophobe respectively.

Anyway, to your point... IGN:

On October 27, 2004, the company announced that the typical battery life for the PSP will be between 4 and 6 hours for games, with 4-5 hours for video viewing. These numbers, according to SCE, were determined with the system's luminance set to maximum (180 cd/m2) and minimum (80 cd/m2), volume set to half the maximum level, headphones used instead of speakers and wireless LAN not in use.
