PSP Custom Firmware Thread

I have an older PSP with custom firmware and just picked up a PSP Slim. I'm assuming the CFW install is the same sort of deal? Does it require the use of a specific UMD or is it less painful?

the OP covers this.

I put the CSO in ISO folder in root of the memory stick and it doesn't show up as installer of any kind when i go to game > memory stick. This is a 3.80 psp slim. Any help?

Your PSP is running CFW already?

From the OP:

What you'll need:
- Any PSP with CFW installed, it doesn't matter if its a phat or slim PSP.
- Memory Stick Pro Duo ranging in size from 256MB (minimum) to 4GB (maximum), even a fake eBay MS.
- If on 3.80 M33+, please have no custom theme installed/prx's installed in flash0 as 400K of free space is required to install IPL patch. When UPMS is finished running, this flash0 mod will be deleted.

I just sold my psp fat with a custom firmware to get a slim one...

Do I just need to get one of those pandora batteries and use that memory card maker app that puts the firmware and stuff on the memory stick?

Also is the new psp slims the new psp core?

I was in the same boat as you, I don't know if it is "ok" to tell you how I did it but I can say this:

Where there's a will, there's a way...

I just used this for an extra fat psp i had and my new slim and it worked flawlessly. Took a fucking long time but i've tested it on both psps and everything is fine...now on 3.71 m33 on both of them.

im now using the component out to my 24" gateway LCD which has PiP so im playing FF7 right now while surfing gaf...marvellous.

The loading time is MUCH quicker in ff7 now...and I finally have the battle swirl back. This is fucking great. Thanks to this thread.

Is anyone else having problems with psp game structure utility?
It won't even run for me. :(

Same with prometeus pro under leopard, actually.
Also, is there anyway to change the icon/background in the xmb for .iso and .cso?

What does psp game structure utility do? Is it an XMB organiser?
There is a PSP program called PSPfiler that can do that for you.

you mean of individual games? Get PBPUnpacker. You know about the ICON0/PIC1/PIC0? If not search for a quick tutorial but basically icon0 is like the background, pic1 is the preview pic that you highlight when you play the game, and pic0 is the description part. Anyway you just create each of the three and then load them up in PBP unpacker along with the game data file and it makes a new EBOOT out of it.

You can create your own sound to play too (same process load it into PBP unpacker)

CFW psp slim is so kicking ass right now. Had 3.10 OE-A before this (on a fat psp slim) and the performance of all my PSX games has jumped quite a bit with the new setup.

PiP Patapon playing for the fucking win.

Are there any plugins, homebrew or otherwise, that allow the PSP to go online via USB wireless EVDO broadband dongles?

USB dongles typically use the regular size USB connector, whereas the PSP only has the mini USB connector. Also, the PSP is not a USB Host, so it cannot connect to devices that are USB Guests (which includes wireless broadband dongles). To do what you describe, you must use a laptop or UMPC with builtin wifi capability and a USB port to plug your dongle in to act as a router for the PSP.

Hmm, well that sux. I guess the only way to get wireless anywhere EVDO broadband is to get an EVDO enabled PDA or phone.

Quick q about MP3 playback guys, is there some plug-in I can use to listen to MP3s while my game is paused? Would be great for when I'm changing public transport.

The Tool battery alone won't help, you'll still need the paired memory stick.
Which can be created with just about any old memory stick using a PC installer. No hacked PSP required.
Hmm, does anyone have a link to a program I can use to make a "Magic MS" that'll work with a pandora battery?

Dammit! Am I the only one having save issues w/ 3.90 M33-2? It's been like a month since I last updated, so I just knew it had to be up to M33-4 or some shit. Imagine my dismay once I found out that I'm still current.

As much as I'm loving GoW, it only lets me save 60% of the time. Otherwise I just get a black screen. Sometimes it does it when I load a game. Happens w/ other titles as well. CPS1/2 emulators never go back to the XMB when I exit out... Just a black screen.

Very annoying.

Grrrr.

Nope, it's still on 3.90 m33-2. May want to try reformatting the flash and doing a full reinstall to see if it helps; I've having no such problems on this end.

Is it a genuine MS stick or eBay knock-off. Backup everything off it (could take a while) and then format it in the PSP.

A few users with Slim PSP have reported that there is no display when they load up the Pandora application. Just follow the guide and press the buttons as directed OR try and press the display button on PSP a few times.

Same stick I've been using without incident for well over a year (Sony 4GB). I'll do as you say and see what's good.

This just started happening since I've been on 3.90.

Some other anomalies:

* I get the PSP red screen of 'UhOh' while doing simple XMB related tasks, like USB connections to the PC, sometimes it's the blue one.

* A number of saves are now corrupted

Some other strange occurrences that escape me at the moment.

Ohh thats a bit weird alright. If you haven't backup and formatted the MS yet, I would boot into Recovery Menu and "format flash1 and reset settings" in Advanced.

Is this the same PSP you semi-bricked awhile back? Might be something dodgy with the hardware itself...

Not a single iso works for me. I'm using 3.71m33-4 and no matter which stick I use (legit or knockoff) the psp always gives me an error.

This is annoying because Ys is downright unplayable with those loading times off the UMD...

Check your IDstorage keys? They can relate to your USB connection, and other physical functions of your PSP. You can check with ChillyWilly's excellent Keycleaner

Corrupt saves could be a result of your USB connection problems, or a bad memorystick, or the fact that a lot of savegames that were last modified/created on pre 3.0FW get corrupt for a reason I can't really remember. (encryption was it?)

Which loader are you using? The detault loader needs a UMD in the drive, but you can change that by pressing select on the XMB and changing to another loader such as the Sony NP9660, which doesn't need a disk in the drive. Also, be sure to put your ISOs in the ISO folder, found in the root of the memory stick.

I'm on 3.90 M33-2, playing GoW (1.6GB uncompressed ISO from my UMD) and I've never had a save problem.

I have a question.

I already made a Pandora Battery to use with my Phat PSP (the one that downgrades the system to 1.50). My friend wants to put some custom firmware on his PSP Slim, but wouldn't my Pandora Battery/ Memory Stick combo be a no go due to it mainly being used to downgrade the PSP Phat to a 1.50?

What would I need to do in order to get his PSP Slim to use custom firmware? I'm guessing my Pandora Battery is fine, so would I just have to get a new memory stick and run something speciffic for the PSP Slim while using my Pandora battery, or do I need to make a new Pandora Battery /Memory Stick combo?

Thanks for any help. I don't want to mess up his PSP Slim.

You can use the Pandora battery to downgrade (technically it's not downgrading, but meh) his PSP Slim, but you need to make some changes to the magic memory stick. The latest Despertar del Cementario will do the trick nicely.

You are fine, even if you screw up, just use the Pandora battery to reformat his flash memory.

I feel like I'm gonna cry. I'm trying to play the JP version of FFVIII, and I simply can't get past the lizards ;_;

I've tried changing the ID, re-ripping the game, and then finally upgrading to 3.90 (hooray for network updating, BTW). Is it really worth it to try using popsloader? I'm gonna fool around with the ID's again tomorrow now that I've updated the firmware :\

My friend loaned me his mem stick that has all the CFW tools need on, which I backed up to my PC (just using copy+paste). Would problems occur if I simply coped them files to a new MS and used that new stick to install CFW on a 3.90 Slim?

I just looked over the guide in the OP. This sounds like I would be making a new Pandora and Magic Memory Stick. Do I have to re-do the Pandora Battery I already have?

If so, I'm thinking about purchasing another battery that can be used just for the PSP slim. I thought I only needed to make changes to the memory stick in order for my Pandora Battery to work on his PSP Slim.

Thanks for the help everyone. I'm glad there is a place to get answers about this topic.
