PSP Custom Firmware Thread

Well I decided to check it out for myself and discovered that Chrono Trigger still runs like shit. What do I do to fix this? Frameskipping makes the music speed correct, but the game runs terribly. I even turned up the processor speed in the menu, but when in battle, the game is slooooow.

Only thing I can suggest is to make sure the in-game clock speed is 333mHz. There should be a setting for this in the emulator's settings, but you can also bump up the speed in the firmware's recovery menu.

Hey guys, I read on PS3forums guide that you can "unpandora" the battery by doing the following:

Is that true!? Because I'll mod mine now :p

If you software pandora the battery, it's pretty easy to turn it back to normal as long as you back up the EEPROM. I can't confirm the hardware solution, though.

i want to install 3.90 m33 as well. " so i can get remote play function back "

so which i download first, the 3.90m33 that u linked or the original 3.90 updae that u posted. ?

i am abit lost

Download both files linked above. You want to rename the Sony 3.90FW to 390.PBP and copy it to the UPDATE folder from the 3.90 M33 files. Then copy this folder to PSP/GAME on your Memory Stick.

I just got myself a Datel Tool Slim. I didn't have a spare battery to make into a Pandora, so I had to buy one of the Datel Tools.
It worked like a charm.

Also, I just made the switch to Apple and notice that when I delete content from my memory stick via the iMac, while the file itself is gone, the "used" memory storage indicator doesn't increase. Why?
I know the answer to at least one of your questions...

When you delete something from a USB device, Mac OS X will leave behind "trash" files on the device. Unfortunately, these are the same size as whatever it is that you deleted! So, to get rid of them, you need to turn on "show hidden files" in the Finder. (The filenames start with a "." which automatically makes it a hidden file in UNIX.) When you trash the . files, then you should free up the space.

Its true ! Its how I modded mine, piece of cake !

GUYS HELP ME PLEASE! :(

Okay I used this guide to make the memory stick in vista.
FOR VISTA USERS:

save this file: hxxp://www.sendspace.com/file/91aeat

( change xx to tt )

Format your MS in your psp

1. Download and extract the files, copy the 'Pandora371' folder to your C:
- you will need 'Administrator permission' to copy the folder, press the continue button twice
*(make sure you are the administrator on your computer via control panel if you arent already)*

2. Turn on your PSP and insert the memory stick you want change to a 'Pandora' memory stick.

3. Right click your desktop and create a new shortcut, type in CMD and click next twice.
* Right click on the new shortcut and choose 'Run as Administrator' and choose 'Continue' and a black MS-DOS window will open.
* (The title of the window should read 'Administrator: cmd.exe')

4. Type in: CD \ and press Enter, this will take you to your C:\> Drive.

5. Now type in CD Pandora371 and press Enter, this will change the folder to C:\Pandora371>

6. Type in installipl and press enter and you should see this on the screen:

PSP MS IPL Installer
Load IPL code .\ipl_loader.bin
15620 bytes(4 block) readed
Scan Media
Drive 0:Non RemovableMedia
Connect target MsProDuo

7. Connect your PSP to your computer using a USB cable and activate the USB connection while the MSDOS window is open.

8. The Program will auto-detect the memory stick and will ask 'Are you sure? [Y]', press Y.

9. If you see "Write MS BOOT CODE" then the 'Pandora Bootcode' has been written to the memory stick.

*You can now close the black MSDOS window since you have the 'bootcode' installed to the memory stick.
Do not format your memory stick after this, doing so will erase the
'Pandora Bootcode' and you will need to make the memory stick again.

FOR PSP SLIM USERS: hold, and keep holding down the L button before putting in the pandora battery. Keep holding it down through the install until you are prompted to press 'X' to shutdown the PSP.

You should now be running 3.71 M33-2 firmware.

** I take no credit for this guide it was made by Skyline from consolespot.net **

Hope this helps!
But when I start to follow the guide, I have problems. I drained my battery fully the night before I made the cut on the battery so does it not have any energy now or what? I put the battery in and the light turned green. But the memory stick did not flash or anything.
Next we will install the Firmware.
Shut down your PSP if it is not already off. You will need to hold the power button, do not just slide it. This does not completely shut off the PSP. Once the PSP is off place your memory stick inside the PSP. Once that is inside you can now put the battery in. When you put the battery in the power light should come on and stay green. The memory stick light will also flicker a couple of times. You will not have anything displayed on your screen so do not worry.

Once the memroy stick light stops flashing you will want to press the X button on your PSP. The memory stick light will now flicker like crazy. Set it down and wait, be patient! Do not turn it off now or you will have a brick. You will know it is done installing when the unit turns itself off.

Once the unit is off remove that memory stick and battery. Now we will need to fix or unpandorize the battery. Open it back up and take your mechanical pencil. Fill in the line that you cut but drawing over it with the pencil. This will complete the circuit and make the battery normal again. Yes this does infact work, I have done it myself with no problems afterwards.

Place the battery back into your PSP. The power light should NOT turn on. Turn your PSP on as normal. Once it is booted to the XMB go check your firmware version under the System Settings menu, it should read 3.71 M33.

Next we will want to update to 3.71 M33-4. To do so obtain the file from Dark Alex's website. There will be an "Upadate" folder within the archive that you download. This will need to be placed withtin the Game folder on your PSP. Connect your PSP to your PC and go into USB mode. Browse to your PSP in My Computer and open the PSP\Game folder. Place the whole update folder within that folder. Exit USB mode and go over to the Games icon in the XMB. Go down to the Dark Alex M33-4 installer icon and press X. This will install the M33-4 update.

Once that is done you are good to go. You now have custom Firmaware on your PSP for Homebrew use.

*Potential Issues*
I ran into the issue of the memory stick not being read when I put the pandora battery in. This is caused by an improper boot partition on the magic memory stick. You will need to remake the memory stick. As I said I was unsuccessful in Vista but XP worked fine.

Another issue is when you put the modded battery into the unit it will boot as normal. This is caused by not having the trace cut deep enough. Simply cut deeper.

If you draw over the cut with your pencil and it does not make it normal again, simply take the battery out and draw some more. I had to do it twice.

I went from Official firmware 3.80 to the custom. It does not seem to matter what firmware version you have on the slims.

Any question please ask. I do not mind helping people and answering the same questions over and over like some people do on other forums.

When the Magic memory stick installer gives you options 1-4, choose option 4.

Hmm I have another guide in this tutorial that makes MS files for Pandora. You could use the guide but skip the IPL section in it as it won't work on Vista. Then use the Vista IPL writing section to do that part.

Well I think the reason why nothing flashed was because I didn't put any files on the memory stick, where do I download the files needed for it?

Just upgraded from 3.70 M33 to 3.90 M33. I'm noticing that Dark Alex's site has an M33 popsloader and a 3.80 popsloader. Any quick reference for which has the better compatibility?

get the M33 and the prx from the older ones (recommended 3.71 and 3.52) and you can run pretty much everything selecting it when you boot. I think the 3.80 is for compatibility purpouses with the same firmware

I can't seem to get svcapture working. I'm running 3.90M33-2 with that 1.50 addon. Pressing the music note doesn't do anything, and when I hold it down, the sound is muted. I tried some of the tweaks mentioned in the readme (such as Enable the first option (Plain modules in UMD/ISO)) and it still doesn't work. What am I doing wrong?

EDIT: Hrm, it seems I need DEVHOOK. Is that something else I need to to install?

Also, is it safe to delete all those EBOOT files after I'm done upgrading?

Did you activate the plugin?

FOR FIRMWARE 2.71 SE-C USERS

* Copy capture.prx to the [PSP_DRIVE]:\seplugins folder
* Copy capture.ini to the [PSP_DRIVE]:\seplugins folder
* Copy the __SCE__SVCPlayer folder to the [PSP_DRIVE]:\PSP\GAME150\__SCE__SVCPlayer
* Copy the %__SCE__SVCPlayer folder to the [PSP_DRIVE]:\PSP\GAME150\%__SCE__SVCPlayer
* Edit (or create) the following files,

[PSP_DRIVE]:\seplugins\vsh.txt
[PSP_DRIVE]:\seplugins\game.txt

In each file add a new line (at the top) that reads,

ms0:/seplugins/capture.prx
* Restart the PSP (holding R) to enter Recovery Mode
* In the Plugins-> section enable the capture.prx in the [GAME] and/or [VSH] then go Back and Exit.

Use this guide here and use your Vista IPL section to write that part of the tutorial.

Edit: Follow the guide and complete up to step 9 but then use the IPL Vista writing in the first guide you posted.

Okay, I'll try :( I'll get back to you. I formatted the memory stick again though to start from scratch.

Hey guys, figured id jump in since i got a psp coming my way in the mail and have a couple quick questions:

- 3.71 M33 supports 8gb memory sticks right? i read somewhere in this thread that the earlier firmwares didn't, but i cant find the post now. (A quick google search says that sony enabled it back in 2.81 so im assuming that it is supported in 3.71?)

- Is there anything i need to do to make the MS compatible with CFW so i can just save games or rip my games to it? In other words, will a simple format from within the psp with custom firmware suffice, or do i have to run a program to prep it for it?

- And just as a shot in the dark, does anybody in this thread live in the Seattle area
WHY DID YOU MOVE M3WTHR33? lol
and has a pandora battery? My plan is to hardmod the battery and then use a mechanical pencil to fix it, but if i can avoid doing it that would be even better.

- No idea, I´m running 3.90-m33-2 and it´s supported

- Nop, format it via the system optian as normal and all folders will be created

- Sorry, Europe

My PSP is Japanese. Just updated to 3.80 (3.90 soon) but it switched by confirm back to X. I really got used to O. How can I change it?

I did a google search but X and O are quite vague and not giving me loads of luck. It's a fatty btw.

Thanks---

the problem isn't the PSP firmware supporting 8GB sticks, it's that the 1.50 kernel used to boot via pandora doesn't support 8GB sticks.

Had to do it for decent speed on Earthbound and CT

Wow, it boggles my mind that this thing can play God of War, but not emulate CT at a decent speed.

The computer I used to emulate SNES games on had a slower processor than the PSP for christ sake.

It's because the SFC emulator is poorly ported PC emu code. Someone needs to write a PSP SFC emu from the ground up.

don't even bother trying to play MGS1. No second analog + no R2 makes it extremely difficult.

I've actually never played a metal gear solid game before, so perhaps it won't bug me as much?

I'm playing the SNES version and it's running great. Just an idea.

Ok, I am thinking about picking up a second psp to alter and keep my main untouched.
Without going back too many pages are the PSP lites able to be changed?
And is the Pandora battery the best way to go?

Edit: Found all of those answers in the OP (Great job on the OP by the way)

Right, so thats why theres the 4gb limit on the memory stick to install CFW with a MMS, amirite?
I have a 512mb MS that i plan to use to install 3.71M33 and just leave it as a MMS, while the 8gb will be main one that will pretty much be used for everything after that. So (in theory) i should be fine? or will there be problems booting it up with the 8gb?
Sorry about the confusion faceless.

The N64 emulation on PSP is salted assy-ass. They need to fix that before they consider the SNES or Genesis.

Wat.

Nothing on the N64 is good enough to warrant that kind of statement. Earthbound and Chrono Trigger are better than the entirety of the N64 catalog combined.

You misunderstood me.

The SNES runs, albeit not at full seed. I've heard Chrono Trigger is perfectly playabe with Frameskip 2 on. Absolutely nothing working on the N64 emulation, except maybe half a dozen games, and they go at like 10-15FPS. Hence we need the N64 up to par with actually RUNNING things.

Hey guys, I read on PS3forums guide that you can "unpandora" the battery by doing the following:

Is that true!? Because I'll mod mine now :p

For people thinking about hardmodding their battery, I would follow these instructions.

Instead of desoldering anything you just wedge in a piece of wire to temporarily short out one of the connections. I did this to my battery exactly the way it showed in the pictures (actually I didn't even bother with the tape) and after a few adjustments to make sure the wire made a good connection it worked fine. Once you've got the custom firmware installed you can take out the wire and your battery is back to normal, and if you need to pandora it again you can do it through software.

The instructions are for slim batteries, but I suspect with a bit of rudimentary circuit analysis it could be adjusted for the fat.

I reckon GBA is better than SNES on the PSP. The games rock, the emu is faste and the GBA is a much closer fit to the screen-size of the PSP so you get less stretch effect.

You don't need a second analog stick to play MGS and R2, L2, and L2+R2 are mapped to the analog nub. I just had problems getting Disc 2 to work, but there's supposedly a way around that.

And yeah, the GBA emu works great for the PSP.

GBA is hit or miss on the PSP, but I've been really impressed by the SNES emulation. A bit slow at times, but playable for the most part. Best solution for SNES on the go, in any case.

The Datel Tool battery? Runs about $35 on various sites. You can do it by yourself though(I did), just open it up and take an exacto knife or something similar and cut across the trace(Gold line) in blue here:

You can use a regular pencil after to fill in the place where you cut after to return the battery to normal. I just did that like 15 minutes ago because Vista sucks! :(
