PSP + Dust Particles = DANGER

Since I received my PSP that I noticed some black staints on the screen that were pretty big and that were noticeable.
They were bigger than a pixel and they were in several parts of the screen. Since I could change their position if I changed the PSP view angle I supposed they were dust particles... Well since here no major problems.

Today I decided to be brave and I opened my PSP. The operation seemed easy:

1. Open the PSP.
2. Clean the Screen.
3. Close the PSP.

I opened the PSP and proceeded to clean the LCD and the screen. I think I had never felt so nervous in my life.
After cleaning it...I proceeded to close it and start it....

Oh ! Surprise ! The dust particles are still there !

Under further examination I discovered that THEY WERE NOT dust particles ! (nor dead pixels)

They were some black staints on the plastic of the screen ! I rubbed a bit harder to remove them...No results....I used a medical stick with a bit of water...No results...And I finally proceeded with alcohol...And no results too (actually alcohol ended fucking the plastic of the screen).
They won't leave !
So my advice for those of you that want to open your system for whatever reason is that beware of black staints...They cannot be removed.

By the way, DO NOT APPLY ANY REAL PRESSURE WHEN CLEANING THE SCREEN. I used a soft cloth made for glasses and I left two scratches on the screen (WHAT THE FUCK!?!?!?). Fortunately, they're not visible when the backlight is on, but when it's off, they're visible.

Will keep the aforementioned in mind, got a screen protector and case on the way from Play-Asia, so that'll relieve some of the paranoia.

PUT ON A SCREEN PROTECTOR, THE FIRST THING YOU DO.

GAH, I bought my PSP value pack off a friend, and he lost the case. I immediately ordered a case and a screen protector, should have them by Monday.

Is the value pack case even any good at protecting? Doesn't look so, combined with a screen protector it should get the job done though.

I wonder how much some real protective coating on the screen would cost.
I actually always wondered about that with all mobile devices - I mean materials that are many times more resistant to scratching are used in glassses for quite some time now (for the plastic lenses) - and they can put up with tons of abuse for years without scratching, meanwhile we have stuff like PSP where one wipe with a harder cloth will leave a milion microscratches in a second :(
Are those protective materials really so expensive? :\

I slightly damaged the screen cleaning it with toilet paper the first day. It is nuts. Now I keep that sucker in the pouch BUT protected with that kind of synthetic white foamy paper used to wrap electronics.

As much as I love my PSP I fucking hate Sony for pulling such a crappy case. I know they are selling it at a lost but this is way too much.

I hope they release soon some screen replacements...My LCD is fine but I completelly fucked the screen... Shit...
It was already fucked up (black stains) but now it's much more noticeable...It's like if I had dropped baseline over it...

Keep in mind that the skin of the PSP is transparent with just black color on the borders....They paint it...JUst that the one that painted mine was him:

A bit off topic, but this kind of reminds me...does anyone remember those old radioactive...um, "dust brushes"? I guess I'm not sure what they were called, but I remember my Dad had one back in the '70's, used it to clean his records before he'd play them. Said it took the dust off by ionizing it, I guess I was probably like six so I don't remember exactly. I DO remember the brush, however. Brown and tan (enticing '70's hues, of course), and the brush retracted into its own little housing. I remember how soft the bristles were...rubbing them all over my face. Dear God, what have I done?

I think these things actually were radioactive, in some minute form. Anyone else know what the hell I'm talking about? Am I in danger of finger or face cancer?

hmmm....should I get the PSP or should I just wait till Sony releases one with a better screen?I certainly wouldn't want my PSP with scratches...:(
I usually cleaned my SP screen with my shirt, I know when I get my PSP, I might do the same if I notice the screen is dirty. Just a habit I guess...and if a soft cleaning glass cleaner scratched the psp screen, I can hardly imagine what a shirt would do to the screen.

Simpler version: Don't open up your PSP or stick dangerous, damaging chemicals on it. Duh. :)

I knew you can't drop chemicals on a LCD and in fact I didn't do this...but there are several kinds of plastics and a lot of them can be cleaned with alcohol...

Conclusion 1: The plastic of the PSP = UBBER SHIT.

Conclusion 2: You are gonna damage it sooner or later so don't be a paranoic and ENJOY IT.

Whoa hoa hoa hoa hoa, WHAT?
The pouch scratched my PSP. I put the console in it, rest it on the passengers seat and drive to the office for an hour. When I showed it to my friends it had some minor scratches. No BS. I am pretty damn sure it was on perfect condition before that.

I doubt they change the plastic...

Buy a MICROFIBRE cloth guys. You should be able to pick it off a GOOD CAMERA shop. Better than a lense cloth (dedicated for good high end camera lenses) and you'd use it to gently (!) wipe the optical surface. Even lenses cloth are rough but the fibres are so minute+soft they don't leave marks with gentle handling/wiping.

I think Sony should have put some kind of plastic like the one in the GBA (normal model)...That would avoid a lot of tears...

The official case isn't top-notch but does its job protecting the screen, at least for me. I have three microscopic scratches (that can only be seen with the console turned off and under good light and at a certain angle) but that was my fault, for rubbing too hard. From then on, I've kept it in the pouch and haven't bothered but wiping it for a second with a cloth if there's dust or fingerprints.

I'm sorry Ourumov. What a fuck-up. Maybe you can get a faceplate from a broken one? IIRC someone on GAF dropped his or hers and broke the LCD, for instance.

It's only noticeable on the main screen...I have been playing Rally-X and it's not a problem...But it would be great to change it for a good skin :)
The 3 black staints continue looking at me...just that now they are laughing :)

Well, for those of you dying to know what that stuff was (I know, who isn't), it looks like there was a strip of Polonium (yup, Po, 84) on those brushes. Here's a little snippet for those of you who remember your mom tickling you with one of these ever-so-soft dusting brushes:

"Polonium is used on brushes that remove accumulated dust from photographic films."

"A very rare element in nature, polonium is found in uranium ores at about 100 micrograms per ton. Its natural abundance is approximately 0.2% of radium's."

"Polonium is a highly radioactive and toxic element and is dangerous to handle. Even milligram or microgram amounts, handling polonium-210 is very dangerous and requires special equipment used with strict procedures. Direct damage occurs from energy absorption into tissues from alpha particles."

(quotes carefully culled for maximum dramatic impact)

There's gotta be a lawsuit in here somewhere...

Be careful if you are planning to remove the faceplate. From the pics @ Lik-Sang there is an adhesive foam rectangle fixing the plastic and the screen. You have to rip it out if you want to replace it, helping dust to come in :(

and if a soft cleaning glass cleaner scratched the psp screen, I can hardly imagine what a shirt would do to the screen.
Well I can tell you what happened when I wiped the devkit with a wool sweater :)

Noooo!!! Don't do it - at least my microfibre cloth fucked up the screen. Maybe some small particle had got into it and scrathced the screen.

I don't know if you Americans are just rough as fuck or just paranoid as fuck. I don't clean my PSP screen regularly, I use the value pack pouch all the time, and I use my PSP quite a bit. No scratches, no dust particles, no dead pixels. I don't know how the fuck you can SCRATCH the screen with a microfiber cloth either.

Maybe my definition of SCRATCH isn't the same but I mean damn, what's the big fucking deal? It's not like the PSP is some $100,000 HDTV in your hand or something, it's just a fucking 200 dollar portable game device with a really nice screen. If it isn't in fucking 130% mint quality are you going to suddenly die? No. Is it going to affect gameplay? No. Does the screen look and less awesome? No. In fact, when the PSP is actually on, I don't think anyone will notice ANYTHING, and I don't know about you but I don't take my PSP out to look at it powered off while jerking off. I do that with it powered ON. :D

:lol uh mmkay there

<Ken_Kutaragi> The PSP comes from a higher plane of existence than our world, and the expected damage from the harsh physicality of this lower sphere should not be held against the celestial perfection of Sony's engineering department.

DING DING DING!

Oh teh noes my PSP has hairline scratches that can only been seen under ultaviolent lights FUCK YOU SONY WHY CAN'T YOU MAKE QUALITY PRODUCT???

The PSP has the same type of "surface" as the SonyEricsson T610 mobile phone?
If so I don’t see what the problem is, my dad has a T610 and I just had a look.. No big scratches just those typical tiiiny once that you have to look in a special angle to see. Is that really a problem, scratches that you will only see in an certain angle?

I think I agree duckroll here.

I have a Sony Ericsson T630, and yes it's somewhat similar but much closer to the actual LCD under it for obvious reasons.

I can only imagine this is what they're talking about. My PSP might have similar ones too but honestly, what doesn't? The difference is, when the PSP is powered on and the entire unit lights up, you can't see ANY of these so called "scratches" at all, especially because as I mentioned there's almost no "gap" between the LCD and the plastic cover. It just becomes one big block of awesome orgasmic light.

Just so you all know, I fucking love my PSP too and I wouldn't let any damage come to it, but playing these mind games on yourself about how fragile the PSP is will do yourself more harm then good. Eventually you might decide never to even take it out of the house, of course that's a little extreme and I believe you're all more sensible than that. :)

In my Case there weren't any scratches anywhere. The front cover of the PSP (where the screen is) had black staints...I thought they were dust...They weren't.
I opened the unit and damaged a bit the screen.

Edit: Just noticed the TAG...LoL...Tell that to Sony...They were the fuckers that dropped it ! Not me :( !

To get even those tiny (unnoticeable) little scratches you have to be applying more pressure then necessary in cleaning it.

I always used my shirt to clean it and never produced scratches...Anyways that doesn't excuse the plastic from sucking ass...They could have used a semi-rigid plastic and it would have been better.
Like the one in calculators/GBA.

So these scratches are on the LCD display and not the unit itself? And you're somehow sticking up for that?

No one is talking about scratches on the LCD, just on the outer plastic face plate cause by cleaning the screen.

Mine has 4 or 5 scratches on the screen, but they're hairline scratches that can only be seen when (1) The unit is off (2) you're viewing the screen at an angle, and (3) strong light is hitting the screen.

I have a screen protector ordered just in case, but I'm fine with these types of scratches.

You ass holes, I just noticed I have a few hairline scratches.

Not that bothered in the end, much like on my DS, putting a screen protector makes the scratches no longer visible when it's off and protects it.

Umm... my ipod is the worst looking ipod you'll ever see. The chrome on the back is a scratchy mess as is the front. It still work 100% and I don't sweat it. Better this way than paying like $40 for a rubber case to protect the bad design

There's a plastic cleaner for pinball plastics that will take out fine scratches and polish the surface. Works great on things like this, but it does take some elbow grease. It's called NOVUS, and there are three levels of strength. For the kind of scratching we're talking about here, NOVUS 1 would probably be fine, but it may be necessary to use NOVUS 2 and follow up with NOVUS 1 to completely restore the smooth look. I haven't tried it on PSP (yet, but I'm sure the scratch that makes me want to is coming...), but it has worked on other screens I've tried it on. Try at your own risk, tho. Let the most desperate here try it first - they have nothing to lose if their screen is really screwed up.

Actually I made it sound like if I had totally destroyed my PSP but the fact is that there are no new dead pixels, the thing is hardly noticeable when playing (the vaseline look in a small part of the screen) and more or less now I am enjoying my PSP like I did with mY GBA....without fears.

Do as I did !!!! Rub a screwdriver into the PSP screen and begin enjoying it !!!!

I believe drohne was the only person to open his PSP and succeed in getting out dust particles and putting it back together. By inspection and more research, my PSP doesn't have any dead pixels rather 2 white stuck pixels that are visible when the screen is black. OH and yes, I do have some hairline scratches on the coating that are visible only when viewing the PSP certain angles but no SCRATCHES!

I gotta admit that I was ANAL about the face plate at first. after every gaming session I would clean it with a microfiber cloth. Then one day someone told me that the best way to check for scratches is in the dark. So I turned out the lights and checked it with a flashlight at different angles, sure enough, the microfiber cloth had put millions of scratches on it (if you think your PSP is scratch-free do NOT do what I just described). Anyway, I didn't care much because before doing that light test I couldn't really see the sctratches, so I got the Hori screen protector to make sure no deep scratches got on there. The main thing to worry about would be visible scratches when the backlight is on. Hopefully in the future, when the PSP launches in NA, Sony will sell the faceplates seperately.

I guess than in less than a month HK dealers will begin selling them. That plastic is very sensible...It's unavoidable to scratch it...
