PSP Vs. DS : The "wow" factor..

I was sitting in the break room at my part time gig and was getting some game time in on SM64 DS. Not really thinking anything of it. Next thing I know I literally had a crowd around me gauking at the screen and being hypnotized by it. Asking all sorts of questions and how they are going to get one as soon as we get another shipment in(we're currently sold out.) Everyone seemed to be realy impressed by the graphics, The dual screen was really interesting, and everyone seemed to love the idea of a touch screen(I was using the little analog nub thingie.) Nintendo knows the handheld market better than any other. And although these things may be "gimmicks" to some, they most certainly exert a certain "wow" factor when you first see them in action for yourself. Do you think these things will be enough to fend off the PSP and it's big screen and damn near current gen graphics?? Not to mention the Pictochat will be a killer app for people in school(kids and college folks) or people who travel on public transpo. What else in your opinion does the PSP have to "wow" the consumer into buying it besides the screen and the graphics?

:lol look at the e3 hands on with both. if either has a wow factor, i'd say its the ultra sexy psp

Must all your posts have to do with fellating Nintendo, poorly put-together anecdotal evidence and comments showing your insecurity with your product of choice?

If we're talking about wow factor, then of course since the PSP is not yet on the streets the DS will be the one turning heads.

The N64 used to turn heads. It doesn't anymore. Do you know why? It is because it was replaced by systems with superior visuals! If you're worried about "the wow factor", then just put your DS away and buy a PSP.

Wow factor means shit; fun factor it what should matter in choosing your system. You obviously feel the Nintendo DS is fun, as do I. So it doesn't matter who is impressed with what in the end.

That said, the PSP will without doubt win the wow factor game. It's not a competition.

Hey I can only go by my personal experiences. And to be honest I never would have expected this kind of reaction from folks. I never got it from my GBA SP... It was actually pretty cool. :)

The other day I was sitting around in my boxers, playing Halo 2, and a high school marching band just kind of showed up and started gawking, looking at the screen and grunting. Then they started to try and touch the damn screen, I guess they were distracted by all the moving pictures.

Anyhow, all 100 or so said they were going to go out and by five xboxes and copies of Halo 2 each.

I really was surprised the first time I saw Metroid running on the DS. (this is after having seen PSP in person).

From the screenshots I was expecting DS to look like a pixelated mess.
I had no idea the graphics would look this clean and smooth. I think some people here will be surprised when they find out Mario DS rivals the graphics in your average PSP game.

I'm just saying that you use anecdotal evidence an awful lot in trying to find ways to support your position, and in general that's a bad idea and represents an insecurity on your part.

When I worked at EB and Dreamcast just launched, all day long people came in gawking at it and many, many said they were going to purchase it. When I played Dreamcast in my house many friends came over, were impressed and said they wouldn't wait for PS2. Do you know what happened in the end? I'll give you a hint: The Dreamcast isn't the current market leader!

Anyhoo, I'll used to get reactions when I got my GBA SP. I also got some reactions when I had a regular GBA. When I got a DS, people also had a great reaction to it. Some even said they might think about putting it on their christmas list this year!

No.

I don't think this is a very fair comparison for the DS; and to be honest it's a pretty irrelevant factor.

When I saw this thread title, I thought it was just another DS troll thread, so that shows you how bad of an argument it is I think.

People will always be "wowed" by new devices, it doesn't matter wtf they are, but if you're comparing the two, it's really ridiculous. Sony, much more than Nintendo, makes their machines to be "wow" machines that people will think are "cool" on-sight. This isn't a good or bad thing, but it's just not a focus of Nintendo or ths DS.

This is like comparing RR screens, really.

Was the marching band like "OMG ITS HALO 1 I LOVE THAT GAME I PLAYED IT THREE YEARS AGO!11"? And were you like "No, it's Halo 2, it just came out a couple weeks ago." And were they like, "OMG IT LOOKS AND PLAYS EXACTLY THE SAME EXCEPT YOU CAN HOLD TWO DIFFERENT GUNS OMG??!!"??!" ??

Just curious. I don't think people would be wowed by that. But I dunno.

Begun, this flame war has....

Dude, the PSP has more "wow" factor than the DS. I brought in a picture of the PSP into school one day, and during history class I got bored so I brung it out to gawk at it. And then suddenly everyone were rushing and bowling down each other and everything in their way to see the picture. It was maddness. people were slicing each other with knives just to get a front row seat to my PSP picture. The teacher jumped up to see what we were clamoring about then he saw the PSP picture and began wanking to it in class. everyone seemed to love the chic-ness. What does the DS have to "wow" the consumer into buying it besides the lack of texture filtering and touch screen.

:lol you guys crack me up, that's why I love this forum. :)

But seriously, if you saw both these handhelds side by side in a store, which one would you be the first to go and check out, but the LOOKS of the handheld alone. Put your fanboyism aside.

I think the one with the dual screens would grab more attention.... ;)

I don't really see people being wowed by the PSP, casual gamers who don't give a shit about TEXTURE FILTERING and GFX will think it's the same as DS, except it doesn't have a touch screen, and only has one screen, and doesn't fold in half, and has soulless games. :)

I'd probably go for the sleek, thin, jet black handheld that would be on display running PS2-quality games or movies on a high res 16:9 widescreen over the bulkier two-screen handheld running N64-quality games on only one of its screens, but I guess that's just me.

:::Goes back to playing Super Mario DS:::

That big-ass 16:9 screen 'wow's me every time.

The DS will end up right behind R.O.B. and the Virtual Boy... Watch.

sure.

The difference in graphics are NIGHT and DAY. Literally a huge chasm stands between the DS and PSP graphically. Youre insane if you think casuals wont notice.

Soulless games huh? Pathetic.

I just showed my SO this pic & said I would have been interested in picking one up if it wasn't for the PSP.

She said... "You want a make-up compact?!?!?

I kid not.

Oh the delicious irony!

But seriously. Seriously. If we assume that both people will be wanting to see these things in action, then I do believe that the PSP with near-PS2 level graphics, a unbelievably gorgeous screen, superior sound and little foot notes that say "can also play movies and mp3s" will be just a tad bit more interesting to "casual consumers." Casual consumers may be dumb, but they're easily distracted. You give them good graphics and they'll sit up and wag their tails.

I'm sorry, but people really need to stop toating out the DS promotional pics, because the thing hardly looks as sleek in real life as it does in the pics. Seeing a nice glossy PSP next to the rather cheap silver plastic DS with its miniscule buttons in person is not going to wow anyone towards the DS - particularly if the screen on the PSP is as kickass as people say that saw it at E3. The DS units at the kiosks don't come close to yelling out sleak and sexy.

All joking aside, and putting fanboyism aside, the difference in screen quality (at least) is just grand canyon lengths apart. The PSP screen is beautiful and crisp and clear and is widescreen. It's just not even a comparrison here. I can't wait to see what the GBA2 can do with such a screen.

Just curious...I say the graphics gap was bigger with the game gear, and Lynx vs the gb than it will be with the DS and PSP. What do you guys see as the difference? The sony name alone?

I remember backwhen the GBA:SP was unveiled, on these boards, THAT was wow factor, but the DS looks like a fat SP...

It is as wow-ish? I wouldn't think so... but on the other hand, PSP has that "all new" flavor, it's got that Ipod "I want to touch it" vibe, and there's never ben a portable quite *this* high tech, so the PSP has more than it's fair share of wow factor

How did I end up missing this topic? It's all sorts of weird. God the bannings are so deserved, those final comments are just mind bogglingly silly.

LOL post fail'd because there was no working PSP at E3. Only empty plastic cases/screens running a video feed from networked computer.

edit: wow, whats with all the banned's in here. i don't see anything worhty of it.

Sony is the market leader in the console industry giving it significantly more clout.

Of course, they also happen to know how to market a device like there's no tommorrow.

Does that mean they will be a success? Absolutely not. Many of their business endeavours have failed. But if ever there was a true challenger to Nintendo's handheld empire, it is Sony.

Hmm thats like saying Nintendos next console is going to take over sony market because they are market leader when it comes to handhelds. Nintendo's lead in the handheld business is larger than sony's in the home console business. This is going to be very interesting, cant wait to see how it turns out. One thing gets me is why the videogame media was raving about the DS vs the psp, i mean surely they would see through "gimmicks"

Yeah the wow factor will definitely be with the psp. But then again the gba sp has more of a wow factor than the DS. The ds has wf if you consider people looking curiously at it since it has genuinely unique look to it.

But then again will people buy it? The Turbo Graphics had held completely kicked the shit out of the GB when it was released but no one bought it because of the battery life. :(

No, it's actually quite different. Consoles are the cornerstone of the gaming industry. The market leader in the console world is quite a bit more potent than the market leader in the handheld world. It is a testament to the handheld world that Nintendo is able to co-exist so profitably when the Gamecube continues to underperform, but in terms of importance it's not even a competition. Being the market leader in the console world is just more relevant.

And I'm not exactly sure about your last comment. Did you say "I don't understand why the videogame media was raving [more] about the DS than the PSP?"

I think you mean the Turbo Express. No, it didn't sell because it cost a fortune and people didn't like the games, just like they didn't buy its big brother the Turbo Grafx 16 (they hadthe same games, of course).

Yea i remember during E3, most of the articles were singing the DS' praises. While I thought psp had a more lukewarm response. At least thats how i saw it. Maybe it was the reggie thing lol.

Oh, heh. Well I think the problem was the PSP wasn't actually really playable at E3. It had a small demo that allowed you to walk around a town in Tales of Eternia and also a thing that allowed you to control the camera in Metal Gear Acid. But outside of that, it wasn't really playable. The Nintendo DS -was- playable. So I think the deal was that most people simply didn't have enough to go off of. To them, the PSP looked sexy, the screen looked great but who knows how it feels in the hands?

The TGS response was much more valuable, imho. The top three things worth noting about the PSP is its extremely ergonomic comfort level, its gorgeous screen and of course its near-PS2 level visuals.

I don't know if it's worth comparing how positive the responses were on either system, though.

"One thing gets me is why the videogame media was raving about the DS vs the psp, i mean surely they would see through "gimmicks""

two approaches :

DS : Style of games most people haven't played before - something pretty new

vs

PSP : The sort of handheld power people haven't played before

I dunno how much longer the "gimmick" defence is going to hold out vs. the DS.

Oh man. Did this thread have some casualties.

Anyhow, I think it's a little dumb to ask about the "wow factor" for a handheld that's been released vs. one that HASN'T.
