Psychonauts PS2 vs. Xbox

Okay, this may have been asked before, but I can't find anything on it.

I've got a PS2 and my new roommate coming in September is bringing his 'Box. My question is, is the Xbox version of Psychonauts better, and if so, how much? I'd like to own the game for the PS2, but if the Xbox version is heads-and-shoulders above the PS2 version, I may as well wait.

The PS2 game is at times amazing looking and at times just fucking ugly.... It really depends on the level. Also, it runs at 30 frames a sec with some levels running worse (such as the velvet painting and milkman levels).

The worst thing about the game is the loading... I am not sure how the loading differs between the xbox and the ps2 versions, but the loading gets really really really annoying on the PS2 version.

Yes.

It's a terrible port and I find it almost unplayable on the PS2. I only played the PC version besides the PS2 version and it plays great on that. Don't know about the Xbox, but I guess it's pretty close to the PC version.

A Psychonauts thread without someone bitching about how it didn't get released on the GameCube? Shocking. GAF must be slipping, either that or all the hardcore insane Nintendo Fans are off trolling some new thing...

ON topic - I would also wait to play the XBox version.. I only got a chance to play a couple of minutes of the PS2 version, and while it would definately do if you had no chance to play the XBox version, since you have the ability to play it on the Xbox later I would wait.

Definitely get the Xbox version, it's better. However, Crispy and jett are bullshit artists, just ignore them. The gap between PS2 and Xbox version is no where near as large as they are implying. That's not even within the realm of opinion, what they state is simply plain wrong.

As I own the Xbox and PC version and rented the PS2 version, I wrote a post a while ago to compare the two...

So I rented to PS2 version just to compare, and let me just echo some of the complaints above.

- Load times seem way longer, they've almost become unbearable.
- Framerate is fine some places, awful others. It becomes nearly unplayable in one or two moments (like the ramp in kids cabin, one or two of the more crowded areas of Milla's Dance party, etc...)
- Inconsistent visuals especially in terms of texture work (some models seem much more detailed in some cinematics, very poor in others. This is most jarring on that bully kid and Coach Oleander), but still remarkably close to the other versions in that regard.
- Dialogue seems exactly the same. I haven't noticed any difference. However, I did encounter an audio glitch in the PS2 version. I don't know if it can be recreated in XBX version or PC version, but whenever I start Milla's Dance Party the sound automatically starts skipping after a while.

On load times: Marconelly said there's a way to speed up load times. He said remove the memory card while playing because the game autosaves everytime you move between areas which greatly contributes to the load times, and that you should do the whole HDLoader thing. He says then load times are only 2-3 seconds between area then, which is much more manageable.

At the end, though, it's not a competition. Xbox version wins for sure. Just

FYI I've only played the PS2 port, but it's so ugly I can't imagine the xbox version being anything other than an improvement. :P

It's an attractive game on all three platforms, I don't know how you could feel it's ugly on any system. It's clearly inferior on PS2, but even on that platform it doesn't approach one of the ugliest games this gen. Unless you're just discussing artistic direction, which is personal preference.

The PS2 version is borderline unplayable. The graphics are pure ass, there are many bugs and glitches, and the framerate is horrendous. I don't think the PS2 port was even finished.

When is this game going to drop in price? You know it's not selling too well, and it still has a $50 price tag. And I can't find a copy used. As soon as the price drops I'm going to get it. But who knows how long that's going to be.

Oh, and I'm getting the Xbox version :D I think the PC version retails for $30 doesn't it?

Everyone just buy the PC version. It's $23 or so at NewEgg. I wish I had remembered that NewEgg sells PC games before I bought it at EB for $30.

Runs extremely smooth at 1280 w/FSAA on a P4 3GHz, 1GB RAM, and Radeon 9800 Pro.

The only thing is the damn thing comes on five CDs. Why can't these asshole PC publishers just use DVDs? Surely it's cheaper to press a single DVD than five CDs, and the subsequent packaging.

Who cares? Psychonauts sucked!!!

Xbox version has much better textures, that's the biggest difference.
PS2 version is "ok" but still a dog ugly PS2 platformer.
Wait for Ratchet Deadlock.

I'm a big fan of the R & C games but there is no way I would recommend Deadlocked over Psychonauts as far as platforming goes. Deadlocked seems like even more of an action/shooter than UYA did. Still, Deadlocked does look awesome.

Whoops, sorry I'm late.

Ahem. MAJESCO IS FUCKING NINTENDO FANS WTF GUYS?!

Where'd I put that magical internet shotgun? People actually DISSING Psychonauts? Accounts have been NUKED for less, gentlemen. Step carefully.

I would buy the PC version, but I cannot fathom playing a platformer with a keyboard. Since day one, I've always played platformers with a controller, and it just seems natural to me.
