Push Square "Death Stranding 2 Is Causing Some PS5s to Overheat"

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is an absolutely outstanding game, and we're sure many of you are spending your weekend exploring Australia – perhaps with our handy Death Stranding 2 guide by your side.

But not everyone's having a great first weekend with the game.

A number of players have complained that the release's map screen is causing their PS5 consoles to overheat.

A fairly active Reddit post reports the issue:

I've been playing the game on a base PS5 and overall it runs great – the graphics are stunning and I've had no issues during regular gameplay. But as soon as I pause the game and the map screen comes up, the fan suddenly goes into overdrive and I get an overheat warning. It's strange because everything else runs smoothly, even during long gameplay sessions. But the moment I bring up the map and start planning a route, the fan suddenly goes crazy and I get an overheating warning. I just cleaned the console recently and it's in a well-ventilated spot, so airflow shouldn't be a problem.

A new patch was released recently but it doesn't sound like that's resolved the problem, and this particular user doesn't sound like they're alone.

"I've got the exact same problem," one player bemoaned. "I'm using an original PS5 digital version. Fans start screaming only on map menu."

It sounds like the issue is isolated to the base PS5, with the PS5 Pro holding up better. It's perhaps worth mentioning that the weather has been particularly warm in parts of Europe and America recently, so that could also be a factor.

But it's possible there's some kind of memory leak or other issue here. The menu appears to run with an unlocked frame rate, so that could be what's kicking the fans into overdrive and causing the console to overheat.

One user suggested sending a detailed bug report to developer Kojima Productions, so it has more information to work with and can quickly issue a fix. That sounds like a smart idea to us.

Dunno if its the case, but this happened before with other games that had unlocked framerate in certain menus or map screens.

I wonder if...

Yep, game devs allow this way to easily... I remember Secret World on my PC (back then), I could on that barely keep stable 60fps... But open the menus and WHAM 999 fps and GPU went whiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii (coil whine deluxe)...

Reminds me same troll bait with FF16 when in reality the consoles were either clogged with dust or locked in a very confined space. And this will overheat any device, really.

it happened on ps4 too, the same problem. basically some (lazy) devs let the framerate go uncapped in those scenes, pushing the system to its max, even in some indie games. it's a legit problem on playstations. devs had to cap the framerate in those moments and thats solved it.

PS5 in theory can't go above certain power draw thanks to smartshift, it should drop clocks before.

Many people have their consoles full of dirt plus some units probably have liquid metal problems - that's my guess why we see overheating issues.

Hunt Showdown had this exact issue. Some sub-menu I believe had something going on that sent people's PS5s into overdrive and a friend got an overheating warning.

It doesn't always have to be related to how graphically demanding a game is, it could just a a few lines of bad code causing CPU/GPU issues.

Yeah, TLOU1 also had this issue in the main menu, the framerate was unlocked and the console would work overtime just in the simple main menu kicking the fans speeds to the maximum. And i think it was Assassins Creed Unity that also had the same unlocked framerate issue when opening the map screen. I never got a overheating message on my consoles, but i can see it happen if your console is in a more confined space, especially during summer.

On PC i always use the RivaTuner to keep the CPU and GPU temps on the screen, and when i choose to run a game at unlocked framerate the temps always go up about 10c to 20c. So gotta lock that framerate.

Negative. A code issue in the game would affect every PS5 if this were the case.
Its just unlocked framerate. Easy to fix for the devs, and has done overheating warning messages before in other games that use unlocked framerate in some menus. Not all consoles run in the same enviroment, in the same room temperature and with the same air flow, so a code issue that makes the temperature raise to abnormal levels, might only trigger a overheating message to a small number of consoles.

Kojima making the game's effects too realistic, the madman.

(note: this is from the first game, so no I'm not spoiling anything from the new one)

Horizon Zero Dawn did this in the map screen back on PS4 so it's just an engine issue of unlocked frame rate on the map screens. OverHeat OverHeat warning probably depends on the usage environment and length of time on the screen.

Devs alowing menus to run lunlocked is fucking idiotic. Naughty Dog does the same in main menus.

The fan goes berserk and for what?

If you go to Settings > System > Misc there's a toggle to Disable Overheat. Make sure you enable that before you play.

You've been warned!
