It was a really nice surpirse to see it drop 'for free' on Gamepass and also if you owned Quake on Steam you get the free upgrade (which I already did). I'm also impressed that they added Quake 64 but by god it doesn't hold up well on a 4K screen! My only slightly negative take from this is...does this mean they aren't working on a proper remake in the same vein as 2016 Doom?

I would imagine this is a test to gauge interest in the franchise overall.
Enough interest and they may well do something new.

Good point. Let's hope so - would love to see some of those gothic castles with a fresh lick of 2022/2023 paint!
Double dipped on PS5 and Switch (thinking of triple dipping on XSX although I have it through GamePass) like I have done for the Turok remasters and DOOM64. Nightdive is like Bluepoint for me… a guaranteed seal of quality.

If they are working on a remake I hope they keep the medieval cosmic horror vibe of the original and put aside the robotic sci-fi non-sense of the sequels. Sorry Quake 2 lovers. Suck it up.

Why is there no native PS5 version? Or is there? The trailer on the PlayStation YouTube channel said PS4 only. I mean, it would probably largely be exactly the same thing anyway, but how about a few PS5-specific improvements? Controller stuff, 120fps (is the PS4 version 4K60?), etc. Maybe even some RT, this game is simple enough that it should be easily doable at 60fps.

Plus, I don't like seeing that "PS4" badge in the menu...

It’s coming but there’s no date yet.

Live from NeoGAF, it's Friday Night!
Controls are weird no matter the sensitivity, with a controller. But is is much better with motion controls enabled.

Otherwise i'm having fun. Never played Quake 64 so can someone point out where the differences are?

It doesn't have all the levels from the original, and many of the ones that are there have been simplified. One thing it adds that the original didn't have is colored lighting, which was impressive at the time. It also has a completely different soundtrack. I think those are the main differences, besides the lower framerate and such.

Thanks for the summary!

Do you really want yet another remake? Honestly would prefer a genuine sequel/new entry, can say the same for things like GTA too tho.

Just pulled the trigger on the Switch version, four levels in and its as smooth as butter so far.

It feels so good to be playing Quake on a portable.

I wish i could test the game on console becuase the controller support on the PC version is fantastic, it feels so good. I dont know why it would be so different on console.

I have Quake 1 on my n64 at home. With a crt.
They 100% nailed the look imo
Them matching how the N64 version looked is not the issue for me, although I could mention the seemingly lack of an aperture grill in trying to match how the N64 looks on a good quality CRT.
The real issue for me is that it's a level pack and it applies a filter that degrades the image quality it but it doesn't allow you to disable that filter. Of course, people could suggest that it's supposed to make it look like the original version and it shouldn't be optional but of course, the N64 level pack has all the other options that are present in the game that weren't there in the N64 release.
Although not as weird as it being a compulsory filter, it isn't a filter that's present in the main game or any of the expansions that it includes.
I have no issues with that filter or as many emulation style filters as they want being available in the game but making the N64 filter, or any other filter compulsory makes no sense. In the main game I've disabled texture filtering simple because it wasn't present originally and because when people were playing the game when it was released they weren't playing the game on a screen that is the size of the average house was in 1986 when the game came out. The screen size very much alters how texture filtering can look in relation to how it originally looked.
However, I would never suggest that anybody was wrong for using texture filtering a I like that people can choose what works best for them and that is very much what I would like to see with the N64 filter. By all means have one but make it optional and let people choose as they can with the other visual options.

This is so much easier to control using motion controls on the PS5.
Believe me, I'm really surprised I'm saying that but it only took a few minutes to get the hang of it, I use the two sticks as normal and the motion controls just and another level of finesse to aiming. It's so much easier to stay on target when you and your target are both moving at full speed.
I really hope that they manage to either remove or at least improve the filter they're using in Quake 64.
Hm, I'm going to give it a go later on, but tbh I always hate when games enforce motion controls for stuff like movement or mini-games.

If they do a proper remake I hope it's good unlike the new doom and wolfenstein games.

I only ask for no cutscenes. I don’t want any narrative on my Quake Remake. The environments speak for themselves on the original Quake. Don’t spoil it Bethesda.
I'd also prefer to have good level design where you don't spend 10 minutes trying to figure out where you're supposed to go.

Is the extremely low music volume confined to all versions or just the Switch?

I hope it will be fixed with a patch, Quake and its soundtrack are synonymous with eachother.

Game is crashing after the intro videos (PC Gamepass), tried to switch to D3D11 via kexengine.cfg since no command line paramaters thanks to Windows App bs, hoping for a patch...

Was doing that to me until I reset PC, seemed to be the Xbox login prompt causing the issue.
Once I reset the Xbox login popped up to grant permission and all was good then.

Thanks alot, the login Window was on my 2nd screen that was turned off, gonna check out Q64, also some Ziggurat Vertigo for the nostalgia.

For anybody with the PC version, you can disable the CRT filter using console commands. It still has pretty heavy blurring but I do feel that it's a lot better without the CRT filter. I do hope that a patch will make the filters optional for people so they have more control over how it looks.

I know it sounds like I'm complaining but I still feel it's a wonderful release. :messenger_smiling_hearts:

I hope they patch in Mouse-support soon for consoles.(keyboard works, lol)

It also seems it isn´t a native SS/SX-App. Maybe the game gets a native app sometime soon with 120hz support.

What time is it?
Episode 2 in the books. I had to do a bunch of quick saving on the later chapters. Having to rely mostly on rockets and their generous splash damage plus aiming with a controller led to a lot of suicides.

It does sound like they were hoping to get it out for QuakeCon and I can imagine it was all a bit rushed close to release which is why there seems to be a couple of fixes for the current console releases. It was the same with the Doom releases last year, they were good but just a needed a bit of tidying up more than anything.
They have said the free upgrade is due "soon" which will upgrade it from up to 4K/60 to up to 4K/120. It feels smooth at the moment but it will be interesting to see a technical review as I've no idea what the native resolution is right now.

Played a few levels thought it was really good so far, fast and intense. The controls feel off to me though, not sure what it is though can’t quite put my finger on it

Camera stick acceleration, goes too fast. Issue known to the devs, they are working on a patch. Hopefully?
