It's probably a combination of racist teachers and parents. "I am not racist but..." comment shows ignorance more than anything else. I think ethnic studies should be a requirement for every high school students or college students. It's very important to understand where most of these prejudices came from if there is any hope the next generation of people to kill racism. Unfortunately racism is still passed from parents to their children, but a better education system would definitely help with this. I also hope that someday any religious school should not be accredited by the government. It leaves a lot of people closed off to diverse communities that this kid demonstrated.
American education system. I see this stuff in college English classes.

Unfortunately common these days. For most students, they won't really learn to write well until college and even then its not a guarantee. Many students simply never learn how to write well.

6th graders know syntax and sentence structure. This reads like a 3rd grader just learning how paragraphs and commas work.
Because the religion became popular among white people, and then white people went to take over most of the world. Depictions of Jesus as a white guy go back at least 1000 years.

As a native New Orleanian, I'm inclined to agree.
There's no way this came from a kid raised in an educated, open-minded environment, so the responsibility for this garbage probably goes further than her. It's ironic, though, considering Louisiana's racial history. Sad and awful.

Not so unusual. I have to evaluate 18-23 year olds writing, and often it can be pretty bad. It's easy for adults who write a lot to forget what the average teenager writes like. From how she wrote I assumed she was around 12-14 years old.
This girl is probably not stupid (as in, not below the average level of intelligence for her age), but she sure is a bitch.
It really underlines the problem with the way American media portrays black people.
Even using "middle east" is a little veague and not completely accurate, I was watching a documentary on vimeo done by a guy from I want to say Jamica who had muslim family who had been in the middle east for well over 1000 years and was able to slip past the conquest and confusion that went on in the area, refused to sell their land off etc. They said most of the "black looking" middle easterners/arabic blacks kind of just gave up and moved to other areas like egypt and left their houses in ruins. The family documented was so well knowledgable of the use of the desert land from living there so long they just refused to leave. They say that the stereotypical middle easterner looking people didn't start appearing there until more recently in history, I'm assuming by that they mean around the time of the heavy invasion of the Turkish empire.

Because religion isn't something most people usually sit down and think critically and logically about. I was raised Roman Catholic until the 8th grade, and it's kind of like how you just accept Santa without question when you're that young and it all seems to make perfect sense. All of the imagery in textbooks for school and paintings or murals or sculptures in church or whatever always portrayed Jesus and other biblical figures as being more Brad Pitt than Bin Laden in appearance. It wasn't until I was older and an Atheist that I began to realize how I had been brainwashed and blinded by western artistic renderings throughout history and began to consider the obvious implications that Jesus being from the middle east would have. It's sad that this student's religious upbringing has engendered a worldview where they feel compelled to both worship and revere Jesus Christ in theory, as well as despise and look down upon him if Jesus ever crossed his path in real life.

There ought to be a sort of prize, awarded only to those who achieve outstanding feats in the illustrious field of casual everyday racism, preferably involving the phrase "I'm not racist, but". Once per year or so. Worldwide scope, to be fair.
The offender(s) would be awarded - mostly in absentia, obviously, but preferably in person - a realistic model of a persons buttocks, fashioned out of only the finest black marble, mounted on a mahogany (or similarly dark and classy) wooden base, with a plaque emblazoned with golden letters (name, date, twitter-sized excerpt/description of offence).
