Random Internet dude goes over a year without using soap/shampoo. Surprising results

I guess I'll try this too. Makes sense enough, and I have shorter hair anyway, so hopefully it'll all be good. I've never felt like I'm particularly dirty or anything (outside of armpits, but deoderant is okay), so it might go well.

What happens if you have smelly feet? You can't just remove the odor with just water can you?
You may have foot fungus.

If not, use soap in privates and areas prone to odor. You don't have to abandon soap completely. Some people just limit it and still get general skin improvement.

I'm not personally doing this no soap thing and foot odor isn't my problem. Just curious to how people would handle that if they're truly abandoning soap all together. But I see, thanks!

I haven't washed my hair (with shampoo) in a few months now and I have longer hair for a guy.

Tips;

Wash through it thoroughly with water
Don't dry it off with a towel, it gets pretty nasty, just dry it enough so it isn't dripping. If you just let it dry normally it'll become smooth and not oily.

Many a women has commented on how they're jealous of how healthy my hair looks.

how often would one shower?

cause i get oily/greasey hair fast man it sucks

When I first started I was showering once a day.

I normally go every other day now with no smell.

I actually wanted to test how long I could go without a smell and I went 3 days before there was any smell which is way longer than when I was using soap.

But yeah, on average after your body adapts every other day is usually fine for me.

I do the "lite" version of this which I think is definitely the sweet spot.

No shampoo, just a thorough rinse in the shower with water and shower gel only on the pits and glutes. Works a treat although I do have short hair.

I use a very small amount of natural face wash once a day as I tried going without and my face wasn't having any of it (oily complexion).

I don't think there's a one size fits all policy here since everyone's bodies are different.

I should point out that I also use cologne daily.

I personally think it's fine to use soap for bathing once a day for the body, but I tend to keep my hair shampoo and conditioner free.

Two weeks now without soap/shampoo just because i had none at home. Feels good. Bought some but haven't touched it at all. We'll see.

I'm used to shower/shampoo on a daily basis.. I'm gonna try this out and see how it goes, it's only been a week but right now it feels like my skin and hair are waging chemical warfare.

I'm going to cut my hair this week, will probably be easier transition with shorter hair.

Anyway, despite being a bit greasy, my hair already feels and looks better.. I can't comment on the smell yet though.

Still been soap and shampoo free since Sept, 2013. Feels good. I had no winter dry skin and itching this winter and I usually have it super bad.

I used to have quite bad acne for pretty much all my life, and thus I used to clean my face every morning and evening. If I didn't do it every time, the acne got worse for a while.

A few years ago however, I just stopped cleaning my face like that completely, and only wash it with water a little when showering. It took a few weeks of my face getting used to it, but after that my face skin really got a lot better, and has been ever since.

Just reporting in with some anecdotal evidence.

Haven't used shampoo or any product to wash my hair for months now (just water in the shower) and have only been using 100% olive oil soap on my armpits, groin, ass, and feet, and nothing on the rest of the body... and coincidentally I've also been having the most sex (with different partners) during the same period, and I only hear compliments from everyone I've slept with about the smoothness of my skin and hair, and the smell of my body.

Seriously the amount of compliments and fawning I'm receiving is insane.

Damn, has it really been 3 years?

I started sometime around this thread being posted.

I'm skinny tho, so no layers of skin hiding any funk.

Yeah, similar stuff happened to me last year too. People started asking what cologne I was wearing and where they could buy it, and commenting on how nice I smelled. I always just said I was using Irish Spring rather than tell the truth, lol. I haven't used soap (other than hands) or shampoo in over a year now and it's been great. I see absolutely zero reasons to go back to "conventional" bathing practices, there is literally no benefits and quite a few negatives.

In my experience the no soap approach works perfectly fine. Just take your time.
However after going a year without shampoo, i noticed my hair always had way more knots, and it was pretty rough. So now i started using shampoo only once a week, and my hair definitely feels a bit better. way smoother and looser. We'll see how it goes from here.

I am a guy with longer hair btw.

It's awesome getting compliments about smelling good when you're not wearing any kind of fragrance (soap, fragranced moisturizer, shampoo, et cetera).

I tried this for about 2 weeks. I didn't stink at first, and my skin felt better than ever, it was great. I started to use soap again because I definitely started to acquire a gamey scent about me.

P.S. Because your skin has a nice, natural coating of oil, you dry off really fast. Also, I was scrubbing with a washcloth in case anyone was wondering.

Maybe you're just a smelly person, haha.

Tempted to try this since my face and body get incredibly ashy after I shower. My wife always tells me how nice my natural body odor is but idk guys... I don't think my scalp will be happy with me

Re: ashy face

Lotion exists for a reason. There doesn't need to be a fragrance. You can also get one that works in conjunction with your skin's natural oils.

I stopped using shampoo a couple months ago and I'm pretty happy with the results. I can control my hair and it looks thicker.

I couldn't image going without soap though. Seems a great way to get lots of bacne.

Your scalp will probably be happy to not be assaulted by chemical products every day.

Haha I also don't tell the truth, cause I don't want them to be weirded out when we're literally naked and entagled, lol.

I actually get bacne if I use soap.

Has anyone else noticed any... peculiarities... regarding the cleanliness in the nether regions after stopping the use of soap/schampoo?

So I cut my hair really short and decided to try to stop using shampoo. Haven't used shampoo for 2 weeks now but I have a lot of dandruff. I never had an issue with that when I was using shampoo. Anything I can do to solve that without shampoo?

Are you still massaging your scalp with water vigorously?

This is what I did to help with the dandruff issue and it only cut the amount down by about half. The dandruff is literally the ONLY thing stopping me from going all water for the foreseeable future. I have black hair so that stuff really sticks out.

I used to suffer from dandruff for years--tried various solutions--never worked. It wasn't until I did no shampoo, did it finally go away for good. It did take a while, though. Like a few months.

Running water isn't enough for me sometimes. To get a proper wash I need to submerge my hair underwater and scrub that way. Sometimes I scrub with a towel under the water too.

I used to have to do this once a week but since I began swimming regularly, it doesn't seem I need to do this at all anymore.

I never posted in this thread but I saw it 2 months ago and gave it a try.

It's amazing, my hair was a mess before and now it's perfect, I'm never going to use shampoo again. In case anyone wonders it took a month for my hair to stop being messy, getting a haircut before starting helped a lot.

Same issue. I started using colder water, and boom. After a weekish my dandruff was gone. This was tough because I looove hot, hot showers. I don't use freezing cold water now, but it is cool compared to what most are probably used to. Give this a try and let us know.

I would love to not have to use shampoo anymore. If I don't wash my (fairly long) hair every two days it becomes a greasy mess and it starts falling out much easier. Perhaps I should give this a try. I am not sure about not using soap, though.

Cant you just take a hot shower like usual and then hose your hair with colder water and wash it out afterward?

What are y'all's jobs and personal situations like that you can run around greasy and unctuous for two weeks?

Not saying this whole regimen might not work for people aside from the whole placebo/genetic stuff, but that's a hell of a long time to go to work and sleep with your spouse on the hope that things get better :)

You're not really greasy and unctuous. Again people are still showering.

Heck, I thought I was going to smell like a swamp, but I didn't. A lady friend who didn't even know about my experiment, always mentioned that I had a nice smell. This was months into the no soap or shampoo.

Eventually, I did start using a natural soap for my privates and pits. And most do use deodorant. And you're still showering. This is not a no shower experiment.

Soap and its cleaning effects are vastly overrated. You're not going to smell like swamp because you don't use soap.

I also still use soap for washing my hands after bathroom use and before and after cooking.

But not using soap on the majority of my body during showering really fixed years long skin issues.

Again, YMMV, but try it before you thinking you will smell disastrous. Many posts in this thread tell a different story.

My hair smells awful if I don't shampoo it for a few days. I don't care if it looks better, that smell lingers.

I've never had issues with shampoo and soap. I can't imagine ever stopping because I'd be so self-conscious and uncomfortable.

I still think this thread is probably a collaborative trolling attempt. I fell for it and almost lost my scalp to so much dandruff. Not to mention the stink: brand new towels would turn into rancid messes after a single use.

Adding hot water to a cocktail of sweat, bacteria, pollution, and dead skin cells can't make you smell good. If it does, I'd like to know the science behind it.
