Hope he has a better future selling his guitars on HSN.

American Idol made its US Debut in 2002 with the help of Simon Fuller and Simon Cowell. The three judges that made the show what it is now was Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, and Paula Abdul. The show became an overnight sensation and pulling in a huge audience and ratings were higher than Paula Abdul's facelift.

Season 14 is the next season which will air January 15, 2014 with a slew of new contestants and 90% chance older rejects that didn't make it in past seasons.
One thing about #Idol is the winners all end up with fulfilling careers. Even the ones that can't sing. Idol nurtures these contestants to make them the best. This is why people voted American Idol #1 best Reality TV Show.

Might have done better to make American Idol once every 3 years, that way each idol is a bigger deal.

Oh well, channels love ratings.

this whole op is some strange mix of anger, satire, and sadness

lol i love idol. moreso than xfactor and the voice and those other rejected singing shows who sing only with their mouth. I kinda wish they consider their audience more instead of trying to do stuff for low ratings.sure the first half of the 13 or so years became problematic because they focused a lot on the drama and mess of contestants but later half of the years they just let people through who didn't even sound so great. that and owned a guitar.i invested too much for this show to get canceled.

You did perfect bro

So, is kelly clarkson the only winner who could make a career out of this, or are there more?

carrie underwood.

So those are the ones that actually had some sort of career after right? Throw in a Daughtry who did not win but has done very well along with a couple others that did not win I am sure.

Is that a good list or is is very meh?

well these are just the winners. theres the runnerup and other people that made something out of themselves. like katherine mcphee who went into acting and such.

I wonder if Ruben is still sorry for 2004.

Greatest song ever. Dude just lists all the months he cheated on his girl and apologizes for each time. Yeah, good going there bro, that'll really work.

Ruben was also on a season of the biggest loser (so he got two years of TV fame outta this) where he wrote a really bad song for the show two.

Katherine McPhee did two seasons of Smash and now one season of Scorpion (so she's on her fourth year on TV).

Who here said Taylor Hicks was successful? I never heard of him after his season so that's pretty funny.

Finally I believe

Show was dead the minute that Taylor guy won. Personality and energy of a singing corpse.

I agree with the sentiment, but I can't even call Taylor's high energy style "Corpse-like"

Show went if the rails in S9 when Simon was on the way out and allow Lee to win in what I can only assume was a joke. Also a bunch of WGWG winning over more talented singers.

Yeah, David Cook is the last one I'm familiar with, and a lot of them prior are just name recognition.

Also, I guess I know Phillip Phillips for making that grotesque, transparently licenseable, insurance commercial ready, poor man's Mumford music.

Hicks has a regular show in Vegas, I believe though I don't know if they extended it a 5th time or not.

Jennifer Hudson is also wildly successful though more as an actress lol.

So true. As soon as I heard him sing it on the last show before people got to vote, I knew he would win. Sounded just like Mumford and Sons who had just blew up in the U.S. While they chose a complete shit pop song with no vocal showcase for Jessica Sanchez.

Dude has like 1/2 octave range but strums a guitar, so WINNER!

Not really. Show fell off the map after season 6. Can't make a superstar every year, if it was that simple, there would be hundreds of these shows spitting out talent. Reason why The Voice winner is never big nowadays, they are good singers, but not great or even superstars.

Though Idol definitely has the best success turning out stars with careers, I've noticed this season (and last) that the singers on The Voice (post Blind Audition) on average blow 90% of Idols' top twelve out of the water. Especially when we're talking about Idol's last season.

I don't know any of them after season 6.

Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood seem like the only big wins. I recall moderate sucess from Ruben, Fantasia, and Jordin Sparks. Taylor Hicks seemed to flop.

Fantasia Burrito is pretty much the best thing I've ever read. ALSO, I didn't know Phillip Phillips was an American Idol contestant, let alone winner. I like that one song about going home.
