Randy Pitchford Regarding BL4 potentially costing $80: "If You’re a Real Fan, You’ll Find a Way to Make It Happen"

Let's be honest people.... Regardless of the quality of ANY game, if $80 is too much then $70 is too much. Anybody saying they aren't going to buy a game because its $80 wasn't going to pay the regular $70 either. If a $10 difference is truly breaking the bank for you, either: A. You don't want the game THAT bad or B. Shouldn't be spending money on new video games. AND that's not a bad thing, it's just a reality of your current circumstances (no I'm not some rich prick). There is a world of cheaper games and sales out there and you know they plan for this game to have a long tail with DLC. The eventual "Complete" edition will come out at the same $80 at some point and even that will go on sale. People are literally bitching about day one access like its a privilege. :pie_confused:

Oh Randy. 🤣 There's been a clear pattern with the Borderlands games: Release base game, stagger a bunch of DLCs and MTs, then make a "complete" edition a few months after the final DLC drops, which one can then buy on discount about 3-6 months later.

I loved Borderlands 1 and 2, didn't mind 3, but why would I spend $80 for the objectively inferior launch product when I can wait a year and pay maybe half that for a discounted complete edition?

The only thing I'm a "true fan" of is my bank account.

Get it off a CD key site if it reviews well you say? Wait for a discount you say? Wait for free on gamepass or PS plus you say?

Thanks Randy. I'll do one of the above for sure.

I don't think this new price tag will be as successful as publishers think it'll be.

Huge games like GTA VI, a new GoW, a Fromsoft game or another Zelda might get away with it, but with AAA stuff like Doom Dark Ages not getting 35k players on Steam at $70, people might be getting more picky for their games.

What a delusional take. Borderlands is a game people like, it doesn't have a ton of die hard fans, very few games have that. You're not gonna do well catering to your borderlands diehard fans.

Dude's always been an ass, but he does nicely show how out of touch gaming industry types can be with their audience. It reminds me of Sony's 'get a second job' hubris prior to the PS3 release.

It also doesn't help that they pushed away a lot of those "diehard fans" with some of the story/design decisions in BL3 and its DLCs, they way they neutered Tiny Tina and other characters in Wonderlands so they could get a T-rating, and then released a massive stinker of a movie.

Borderlands ain't a $80 IP.
It's a $50 IP at best.

Problem is $80 is opening the door for $90. And if the theories are correct GTA will again open the door to $100 dollar games. If the industry as a whole wants to charge more upfront but have people buy less games than ever, this is the way. This opens the door to some people just choosing their one game for the year and being happy with that. Doesn't sound good to me.

Will have to get 2 jobs to buy games now right?

I google "what is federal minimum wage"

It says: $7.25 per hour

I look at price of BL3 on launch.

It says: $59.99

It look at thread title it says to BL4: $80

80-59.99 = $20.01

20.01/7.25 = 2.76

You need to find work for 2.76 hours more to play the game if the price is increased. Round up to 3 hours for extra sales tax.

Don't forget how they made New Tales from the Borderlands themselves and it fk'n cratered.
Telltale's original is fondly remembered and earned a 94% user score on Steam, New tales skidmarked to 31% with only 1,664 reviews and it's been 90% off many times.

ahhh i see randy went to the school of l33t marketing.... in opposite world

(Just shut the fuck up dude, you are killing any positivity the game had going for it)

it's dead jim.

Does millennial writing worth $80 for you? Does zero advancements in the genre worth $80 for you? I think the USBkey guy can fuck off. But the truth is, i kinda want it to be $80 because this game deserves to be crucified on the socials (assuming its like BL3 and its dlc, which i am 95% certain this is exactly what we're getting).

It's a Borderlands game…it will be under $10 in a couple of years. I can wait!
I agree with both you and the guy who says if you aren't paying 80 you weren't paying 70. Both things can be true. 10 dollars doesn't dissuade me at all if the game is good and I want to play it right then, but also I usually wait on sales. Only on hyped games do will I buy them day 1. I am always in the middle of another game so there is no reason for me to pay extra to buy it on launch.

So nothing changes for me. I still buy my favorite games on day 1 no matter what they cost. I still wait for sales on everything else. The purpose of my wishlist mostly for sales. I check for sales all the time. I checked like twice today before this topic even came up, lol. I have about 24 games I'm currently watching for sales. This weekend I bought the PS5 version of Skyrim Anniversary for like 16 bucks and then paid 5 more for Valkyria Chronicles definitive edition. In this way, I am very happy with my gaming purchases. If I ever go broke, I guess I could go to gamepass on my xsx.

The nice thing is that it won't take long for the industry to figure this out. This is capitalism in its purist form, and competition is going to crush the hopes and dreams of a lot of west coast devs.

I met Randy at Pax Prime, the year BorderLands 2 launched. He seemed humble, amazed how well BL1 was received, and was ecstatic for the BL2 hype. He appreciated the fans and how Mikey Numanns creative vision/comedy was going to make BL2 even better (he was right, BL2 was the best in the series).
I wonder what happend?

Unfortunately I'm more of a real fan of the $80.

Borderlands was a neat gimmick, not sure we needed four of them. Bring back Brothers in Arms tbh.

It starts here...

And gets really good here....

Lol. I missed that gem of a thread. Dench doing his hypocritical forgetting.

FREE DUKE NUKEM RANDY!

Anyways, yeah, the "basic" version will be $80. Take 2 need to start edging up that price to lube up gamers for that $100 GTA 6 "basic" edition price.

I like the Borderlands games for their co-op, which gets better with every iteration. Alas, the story and characters keep getting worse. Playing them on mute solves some of the issues, but obviously creates a host of others.

I keep waiting for someone to clone BL in a Steampunk or Sword and Sorcery setting with a barely there story, so I can just co-op away and leave Pandora behind for good, but so far the only contender is... the Tiny Tina spinoff.
-_-

BL3 and Wonderlands were garbage and I feel that they took around $100 from me with those games. Anyway even when I have faith on BL4 i'm not going to pay $80, I'll wait for a sale or try it from green steam.

The fact that min wage in certain areas are that low is frightening, I don't understand how folks can live off that.

And folks still need to eat, cost of living is getting worse and worse, the simple math is good but in practice people are going to have to choose what they spend their money on.
