Raspberry Pi Gaming thread - Cheap emulation and gaming projects

Hey all, just trying to decide between using one of those zero delay USB encoder kits and hooking up directly to GPIO.

Are they really zero delay? There's a handy kit on Amazon that would make things pretty easy, but if it's shit I'll wire the buttons to the board itself.

Ugh, so conflicted on buying a raspberry pi 3 or not. I doubt it's going to help much with N64 but it might help with dreamcast games a lot.

Oh right, I wonder what time it hits, if the rumors are true.

Some comparisons between 2 and 3 that I don't understand what they mean:
CPU CryptoHash – Pi2 15.4, Pi3 24.9 (higher is better, Pi3 61,7% better)

CPU Blowfish – Pi2 61.8 Pi3 40.8 (lower is better, Pi2 has 51,5% higher result than Pi3)

CPU Fibonacci – Pi2 16.1, Pi3 12.3 (lower is better, Pi2 have 30,9% higher result than Pi3)

Pi is 64-bit
GPU is same as before but with two cores instead of one.

There doesn't seem to be a limit to how many you can buy like the Zero. I'm assuming they made plenty RPi3s, and either underestimated demand for the Zero or needed the manufacturing capacity for the RPi3.

Picked one up :)

Really close to picking one up, but there's only one case available so far, the red/white official raspberry one on element14.com (and looks like that's the only site that ships to Malaysia.)

Might hold off a day to see if they get any more cases.

Element 14 is sold out. They didn't make enough.

Just got mine from element14, my hope is that the N64 emulation is held back by the processor, so 30-50% better performance should move it over into the good enough bracket, then we just need someone to improve compatibility.

To be honest myself and my son played through all of Blast Corps on the Pi2, tons of slowdown but still playable, i'd estimate hit in performance upto 40% at times, depeding on what is happening on screen.

Are we assuming that retropie will just work ?

Good headsup review

Picked one up from Pimoroni. I've been looking at them for a while and with the release of 3 it seems like a good idea to jump in.

Raspberry Pi B+ and 2 B cases are all compatible.

I've got my pi 2 up and running with RecalBox, and I am loving it. Only quick question now is can I set individual button mapping per each emulator somehow?

PS - this thing rocks! I had forgotten how much I loved old school games!

Just got a Pi 2 for Christmas so will hold off on the 3 for now. The Pi Zero might be interesting if I can figure out how to put it inside of something small, and get a little battery to power it though. Too bad I have no technical/electrical skills whatsoever, ha.

That price is alright if retailers stick with it.

so about £30-35 once stock becomes low, ugh.

If I had to guess, a Pi3 model B will appear at some point with more ram, I can't see 1GB being there for over a year without people wanting more.

There's the Pibow Ninja Coupé case....

Is it the same form factor as the 2, ergo will fit in the same cases?

Not that I'm that invested in it... forgot to withdraw my pledge on KS for the Pine, so I have one of those coming soon.

Just bought a RasPi3 and I'd also like to know what's the best encoder route. Additionally any recommendations on sticks/buttons?

Thanks

I didn't know that. That's cool. They said that the LED light position had changed for Pi 3, so I figured I would play it safe and just get the official case.

That's a great case. I like the regular Pibow Ninja Case better though.

Same form factor, LED light positions have changed. Should be able to use the same cases though.

Unfortunately it looks like 1GB is the limit:-

No plans. There is an architectural limitation with the VC4 which means 1GB is the limit.
I'm guessing this means they have taken the current Pi design as far as it can go, and that a future model may have to lose backwards compatibility if they want to increase the RAM.

This thread has inspired me to try to complete one of my life long dreams of owning a cocktail arcade cabinet like the old Pac-Man/Galaga machines. My plan is to make the innards the Rasberry Pi. I have a kit I have picked out and everything. It's going to take awhile (currently in the middle of building a VR-capable gaming PC from scratch), but it's been super fun researching.

You are in the right place, loads of people have done this before, its also worth looking at the build your own arcade controls forum as well ..

With a bit of imagination and hard work anything is possible (shameless plug)

Got my raspberry Pi 3, initially swapping SD card from 2 to 3 didn't work, Boot Pi2 go into terminal type the following commands, swap SD card to 3 and boot, wifi and bluetooth seem to be working, initial impressions are that its faster, N64 is looking much better ...

The only thing I can't work out is how to overclock, didn't seem to work from the retropie menu ?

Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Does anyone know if the Pi3's release will have any affect on the other Pi Lineups price?
Was thinking of picking up a couple more for making a lightberry (ambilight) for my home theater and music and movie streamers around the house!

They've got a bit cheaper at dedicated stores here in Japan it seems. Anyway, you're not im a hurry if you are looking to get Lightberry HD since some of their parts are sold out til the middle of this month. I'm also waiting for them to restock btw. ;).

I just saw those and I'm in love. Is there any way to knock one up a bit cheaper than what they're asking? I wouldn't even mind making one that just does some kind of warm white background brightness or single-colour thing.

Yeah I'm also in Japan and noted that on Amazon the Pi2 was ¥1000 cheaper on one store.

Still bummed that we have to wait for Pi 3 though.

Have a look over this:

Hopefully it is of some help.

Ordered a Pi 3 model B and I'm already worrying that I'll stop collecting physical games and just go full emulation. It's kinda what had been stopping me for the last several years...

Hey Guys,

I set up a Pi 2 as a retro console last night, and it worked well for me, I have a couple of questions though (apologies if they've been answered)

1. Is there any way to easily set up save states? I want to play through Mario Lost Levels for example, but don't fancy doing it without save states. All I can seem to do is boot back to menu using Start + Select (I'm using a PS4 controller)

2. I've copied over some games using a USB stick. If I remove the games I've already transferred and put new ones on to be transferred, will they be added to the ones on there, or will they wipe the ones on there already?

3. IS N64 performance universally terrible? I loaded up Goldeneye and it was unplayable...

Thanks!
