Raspberry Pi Gaming thread - Cheap emulation and gaming projects

Hey Guys,

I set up a Pi 2 as a retro console last night, and it worked well for me, I have a couple of questions though (apologies if they've been answered)

1. Is there any way to easily set up save states? I want to play through Mario Lost Levels for example, but don't fancy doing it without save states. All I can seem to do is boot back to menu using Start + Select (I'm using a PS4 controller)

2. I've copied over some games using a USB stick. If I remove the games I've already transferred and put new ones on to be transferred, will they be added to the ones on there, or will they wipe the ones on there already?

3. IS N64 performance universally terrible? I loaded up Goldeneye and it was unplayable...

Thanks!

Hey! Other people will be able to add a lot more than I can, but I can help with save states - i believe that select & triangle opens up the in-emulator menu for the SNES and you can do all your save state stuff there.

N64 performance seems pretty bad. I overclocked my 2 and games (outside of Mario 64) tend to stutter a lot. I haven't tried many games though.

awesome, thanks!

Bummer about N64, but everything else about this project has been amazing

Don't take my word as gospel for all N64 titles - my girlfriend plays Diddy Kong Racing on ours and although it slows down a little at times it's not unplayable, so there's a chance that other games might work ok, Goldeneye doesn't run well though which is 90% of what I'd want to play. I can't remember if I tested Banjo Kazooie or not either, but that'll probably be much the same.

Anyone have any ideas about what kind of performance gains we'll see with the Pi3? Will it make N64 games more playable?

My immediate answer is yes, N64 seems subjectively better, still some slowdown but not as bad as RPI2, i'd say 20% better.

This is without any optimization or overclock ..

Just tried Tekken 3, Strikers 1945 and Raiden Project on RPi3 with very good results! Hard to say for sure but it must've been 60fps or very very close, I'll try Tobal 2 for hires mode tomorrow if I can rip it, and remember that this is on RetroPie 3.6 in 32bit mode, it should be even better with 64bit mode. I don't know how to run games with multiple discs but I'm already thinking about how to build some kind of super ps1.

More playable for sure.

But Goldeneye is still a slideshow (just tested it with my Pi, slightly overlocked from 1200 to 1300)

Oh, so *that's* what speed it runs at by default. I was wondering what the default overclock speeds in RetroPie did, and as it turns out... nothing.

I have a question about how Retroarch or whatever does the emulation for vertical shooters. When something like 1942 comes on, if the default resolution is landscape, is the game displayed landscape and fit to the screen's height, or portrait (full screen)?

Landscape fit to height:

Portrait (arcade style):

What wireles controllers are you guys using for retropie?

I use xbox360 with PC wireless adapter, works out of the box (but the xbox lights aren't correct), install the proper driver from within retropie setup and the guide lights work correctly ...

I haven't tried but I assume the PS3 controller should now work natively with the bluetooth ?

Holy shit, I didn't realise they were actually available right now. Wow.

I don't know if there was anything that would barely run on the 2 which could see a marked improvement, but I'm curious to see if it makes that much of a difference. I'm hoping it could see the implementation of filters on emulation without too much of a hit more than anything else.

To be fair im not going to bother with retropie until they support x64, as sadly without them implement x64 were not going to see any improvement over the RPi2

Going to wait to see if someone will use the built in bluetooth and build in an easier way to sync most BT controllers. DS3 is easy but others such as the Wii U Pro Controller and 360 pad are less so.

Don't think they'd create a build for it soon? Or is there more to it than that?

What do you mean? Right now the os doesn't even support the 64 bit arch so there is no use for the special built. And whether the cores are made and compatible for the arch is also unknown.

Ov tall it's a minor upgrade, maybe when there's s a 64 bit version I saw some improvements with reicast with marvel. Vs cap on 2 ruling at full speed ? (No sound?!) will have a go with agency later as that tan at 15fps on the raspberry pi 2.

Not seeing any huge improvements with n64, still slowdown with games. But ps1 and snes are perfectly fine e en with shaders and overlays.

Overal if you are new to the game then yes, get the 3, still on a 2? Not missing much yet. At this point it's really matter of optimisation for n65 games otherwise we are going to have to wait a few years for tech to brute force play it.

Doesn't seem like a standalone ISO but there is some impressive new features in this update.

RetroPie 3.6 (01.03.2016)

Added Support for the Raspberry Pi 3 [Via Raspbian Firmware Update]

Added new experimental modules:
Daphne (Laserdisc Emulator)
Libretro-QuickNES
Libretro-Beetle PSX (x86 only)
Libretro-Beetle Lynx
GemRB engine (Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, Planescape)
ResidualVM (Engine for Grim Fandango and Escape from Monkey Island)
Libretro-MESS (based on the most recent version of MAME)
Libretro-MAME (based on the most recent version of MAME)
Added EmulationStation theme Simpler Turtle Pi to the theme installer from Omnija.
Added version details and uninstall option to the RetroPie Setup Script.
Fixed insert coin not working on arcade based emulators.
Various other bugfixes and improvements.

Does emulation station have the ability to use border-art? So you could play the game at the correct ratio and have the border art fit around that?

good to know, i have a pi2 with openelec. I was thinking about buying a pi3 for this

damn i need more HDMI ports on my tv

I have a Pi Zero I'd like to give to a friend, but he's ONLY interested in Arcade games on it. Is there a really solid, easy to navigate MAME for Pi?

I know it should be possible to place a Raspberry Pi into a Dreamcast shell, but would it be possible at all to hardwire some of the hardware together? ie, dreamcast controller ports?

You could probably drive the DC controller ports via GPIO, but for simplicity a USB to DC adaptor might be an easier approach.

I bought my Pi2 last year and shamefully didn't really get around to using it at all until now. I created the image for RetroPie/Emulation Station so upon boot it loads straight into Retro Pie with the fancy UI etc.

Everything works great (although I need to figure out how to add a second controller and I'd like wireless controllers if possible), but mainly I was wondering, how do you update Retro Pie to a newer version if there is one?

Hey Guys, I have a bit of a technical problem, and I'm hoping someone can help me out.

I've wired up my own 2-player arcade board to RetroPie using an IPAC, and it sorta works. The problem I'm having is that when I boot up the Pi, it always says, ""1 GamePad Detected" and asks me to configure it. Obviously, I want to skip this screen because the IPAC shouldn't register as a Game Pad, but a keyboard. But the bigger issue is that even if I go through the trouble of configuring it, once I exit a game, no input device works unless I reboot the Pi, at which time I have to re-configure it again.

Any ideas how to fix it so it doesn't recognize my IPAC board as a Game Pad and allows me to use it as a keyboard to navigate the RetroPie menus?

The setup script can be accessed from the RetroPie menu in emulationstation. Instructions below, its non-destructive.

Does this help ?

Thanks for the report! I wonder if a 64-bit version of Raspberry Pi 3 would make a difference for N64 emulation.
