Ratchet and Clank PS4 Reboot Delayed To 2016, Out Spring 2016

Nice. No fucking need to oversaturate 1st party titles with all the amazing 3rd part titles coming this fall. I like that Sony spreads out there games during each year, instead of just releasing them in sept-nov

this is fukin terrible. had ms not shit the bed they could have cleaned house, sony have no big exclusive releasing for the 2nd year running. something needs to be changed here

Fall/Winter is not the end-all-be-all that it once was. To say Sony does not have a big exclusive is missing the entire year and just focusing on 3 months.

I know the feeling of frustration but from a business standpoint those exclusive games get overshadowed by the big 3rd party big budget AAA's with big marketing money. I believe Sunset Overdrive didn't sell well at all and it was a critical hit (just using that as an example).

I think Sony recognizes that they can release their exclusives during the first half and carry that momentum throughout. Also, Sony is going big with 3rd party marketing deals and they're not competing against them with their own stable (Halo versus CoD) during the holidays. I think this is a very smart business strategy to be honest as much as this annoys me.

It's better than all the rest of the year though.

Why? Because that is the holidays? Sales for the entire years worth of games and previous years will be happening around then and gives people incentives to jump aboard and for current owners to get deals.

Personally I hate stacked game launches and would rather have them doled out throughout the year. Hell, I personally do not like Sony stacking Spring with so many releases.

But overall that is just personal preference.

Pushing it back because a Sunset Overdrive sequel just got greenlit, right?

Right?

No, they're developed by two different studios. Insomniac's Burbank studio developed Fuse and Sunset Overdrive, their North Carolina studio develops R&C games.

The game was meant to come out at around the same time as the movie, to capitalise on its (hopeful) success and seeing as the movie was delayed as well, I'm betting that's the reason why the game was delayed. Hopefully all the management changes at Sony Pictures have resulted in them backing it a lot more than they were before.

The management of SCE, in particular Andy House, are doing an excellent job.

Adam Boyes is doing a great job in 3rd party productions, marketing deals etc.

Marketing department doing excellent job.

Shuhei is the President of Sony Worldwide Studios, and there are no* internally developed Sony games from their flagship studios releasing this year.

How is that not mismanagement, and general incompetance with his role as President?

*There may be unannounced title/s (I hope to God there is), but if E3 passes and nothing announced for Holiday 15, then Shuhei is really doing a terrible job.

SMH. R&C is externally developed, so this news wouldn't change that statement even if it were true (which it isn't, unless you know something we don't about Tearaway Unfolded).

In reality, only one internally developed game has been delayed this year, Uncharted 4, and another was cancelled because it apparently wasn't up to standards (SSM's Destiny-like new IP). So no, I don't think you can just blame everything on mismanagement or incompetence. Shit happens and game development isn't easy.

Oh and FYI, Adam Boyes isn't in charge of Third Party Productions, that's Gio Corsi. Boyes is in charge of Third Party Relations at SCEA. SCEA and SCEJA have their own equivalents to that position.

I'm don't think Shu is to blame for this one, the game most likely got delayed because the movie was delayed, and I'm sure Shu has no control over when the movie will be released.

To get things back on topic, I'm disappointed that things have been delayed to spring but this will only help the game which I can only assume will look like a playable Pixar film. The guys at insomniac are very talented and I can't wait for them to show us this game.

In terms of the movie side: it's a whole other beast of an industry. Release weekends are highly analyzed, to a ridiculous degree. It's why they'll announce movies releasing on an exact date, years from now, and well before they even start making the thing, let alone hire people.

What I want to know is, will we get to fight Sylvester Stalone with a RYNO while Paul Giamati makes death threats at us?

The movie was being screened a few weeks ago, how can it not get done this year? Sounds more like the movie was delayed because the game wasn't ready for 2015.

I meant to say Relations - and you must have known I meant that when I listed marketing deals next to his name.

And I also know it's SCEA, but apologies for omitting that massive detail.

I am aware that Insomniac is a 2nd party, and is in partnership with Sony, but I am trying to understand why there seems to be gaping holes, not once, but twice now in Holiday periods, and seemingly wanton disregard for anything resembling a solid 1st party lineup.

Shuhei is the President of WWS, and is top of the food chain when it comes to highly relevant factors such as responsibilty for the output of Sony 1st Party studios, and the buck stops with him.

I don't understand why you constantly appear whenever I post my own, PERSONAL, critique on the performance of Shuhei as President of SCE WWS. That is my opinion, and is based off facts.

As you can tell from my avatar, I love Playstation, and even I'm calling him out on his terrible performance lately in that role.

You should stop making excuses, as it seems to be one thing after the next now with delays

I didn't read it like that at all
Can you talk about the release date and what opportunity you see for this film in that window?

The reason why the film was moved into 2016 has to do with the release windows, and trying to maximize the time between competing films. April 29th gives us a solid amount of opportunity to be in theaters for as long as possible.

I'm still not sure why this is a hard reboot.

Because the movie is a reimagining of the original game and the game ties in and expands on the narrative of the movie. It's not a reboot in the sense that they're abandoning the previous continuity altogether, though I imagine if the movie is successful enough to get sequels, I can see them doing more movie tie ins.

Defensive much?

I understand the frustration but this was never going to be a big game anyway. I don't know why people were getting excited about this in the first place as its a remaster/reboot/remake, whatever you want to call it. Now I'd understand if it was a new R&C trilogy or something, but it's not.

Sony WWS have been very disappointing this generation thus far however. This game was always going to accompany the movie but the rest of the first party stables output has been beyond underwhelming. I understand that the console is selling on its own and they will only reveal games when they feel like they are truly ready but this is what happened with the 360 last generation. Microsoft only released few games per year because the console was selling on its own. I know the difference here is that Sony have WWS but still, this isn't great for those who want more than just multiplatform titles.

Not revealing to the crowd what these games may be is also a bad idea as well. We could possibly end up with another Order 1886 situation where despite the general audience telling them a year in advance about what they don't like, the developers have spent so much time crafting their game that they just ignore the criticisms and release a game that not many people are very fond of.

Best wishes.

I can see the movie really boosting the popularity of the franchise. As it deserves tons of success. Rachet and Clank: ACiT was easily one of the best single player experiences last gen. It's going to be hard for them to top that game, even with the technical advantage of the PS4 over the PS3

This is eerily similar to Fall 2014 for PS4. Which is interesting because we all thought Sony would kill it Fall 2015 to make up for their shitty late 2014 lineup. We approached 2014 E3 thinking they would have a big game to announce for the fall. Turns out they had LittleBigPlanet 3...not too exciting. I'm expecting similar disappointment this year. Bummer; losing Uncharted 4 from the Fall schedule was a massive blow. Adding insult to injury is the fact that Tomb Raider could've been a great fill-in if it weren't snatched up by Microsoft. I think MS' Halo, Tomb Raider, Forza lineup will crush whatever Sony has. Which makes me sad since I have a PS4.

Sounds like even if the movie/game is coming out this year, it'll be sleeping next to Spectre, Hunger Games and Force Awakens.

And that is why it is not coming this year.

I am excited about the game because I like Ratchet & Clank games.

Spring 2016 will have Street Fighter 5, Uncharted 4 and Ratchet and Clank

That's one hell of a spring

Holiday 2015 will be No Mans Sky and Persona 5 dominated anyway. No room for anything else.

Oh and Dragons Quest Heroes and Disgaea 5 as well. Yeah those games alone will take till spring to put my time into anyway lol

I like your positive attitude, but there was DEFINITELY room for something else. Those are pretty small games compared to MS' lineup. I also personally don't have interest in either. Uncharted 4 is what was needed.

What the fuck is going on at Sony's game studios brah? Yeah yeah I get it, game dev for AAA stuff takes more time and money these days, so on and so forth. But I wasn't under the belief R&C was a AAA kind of game (not by the industry standard, anyhow).

I just don't want them to lead into the 2nd half of this year with no big 1st party exclusives; despite what people say those DO matter, especially to people like me who may be in the market of buying a current-gen system a little later this year.

You can criticize MS for a lot of things but at least they leave the dates for their games vague enough to where they don't have to announce a delay publicly. Seems to me Sony announces release dates too soon and eagerly; they should be more vague in the future.

EDIT: I'm learning now thanks to other posts that this whole thing may've happened due to the movie being delayed to that time frame? In that case I can understand to an extent why it makes more sense. Even so, it's not like this is a game to supplement the film,...it's the other way around.

If anything the film should've kept up to the game's schedule, since the franchise is primarily known as a gaming franchise. It seems like they're trying to reposition it to a series known for film and games secondary, and there isn't anything inherently wrong with that. The Lego games are quite quality and they mainly exist to serve the films.

I just figure on one level I hate seeing a game franchise become submissive to the film industry (yet again), and on the other level, it could lead to some people thinking of the game as a typical "licensed film game", which don't traditionally have much in quality. Stuff like the Batman games are different I'd say; they stand on their own and only affiliate with an era of films, not any particular Batman films specifically.

Why care so much about competition?

Sony's Spring lineup is good, so it's just a matter of getting the games a few months later.

I care about the competition because I'd love to play those three games. But I don't have the money to be spending on two systems. So I wish Sony had more to offer. And the reason I care about the Fall/Winter season is because it coincides with when I have time off work, Christmas presents, etc.

Haha! I wish! I'm a Writer at the company now, but hope I get to do some more video stuff in the future. Sunset TV was so much fun to work on.

Congrats!

Insomniac is not under the Sony game studios umbrella...they are third party.

NMS will likely take up all my time. I'm talking time wise. Not budget or anything. Thinking about it MGSV hits late(?) September and then Disgaea 5 hits October. So those 2 games will dominate my times. NMS will dominate whenever it launches likely November and then add Persona 5. Those are very time hungry games for me. So I'll be dandy till spring 2016 and that is not counting The Witness, Rime, The Tomorrow Children, God of War 3 remastered and all the other games hitting over the next 5 months.

Going to be a crazy year and now we see 2016 will start out just as insane as 2015

Not sure what's hard to understand here. Do you really understand what the game is? It's not just a carbon copy of the first game, but basically a completely new Ratchet game that revisits the origin and tells it in a new way. It will revisit some previous locations and plot points, but gameplay wise it's a completely different beast. Like I said, it's not a carbon copy of the original. So there will probably be tons of new gameplay features that weren't present in the original (such as arenas, strafing, different gadgets, different weapons, etc) and even though it revisits old locations doesn't mean the level design will be exactly the same. For all intensive purposes, it is a new Ratchet and Clank game.

If you did understand that already, i'm not sure why you would wonder why people are excited.

How exactly do you propose Sony fix this "gaping holes" problem then? Delay games for months/years just so they can fill a spot in a lineup? Rush them instead? Games take years to develop and unexpected things can happen, like SSM's new IP being cancelled or Uncharted 4 being delayed. Shit happens. As far as I'm aware, Sony's studios are all fairly self sufficient, it's not like Shu runs them with an iron first like other publishers do, so what's blaming Shu for every problem they encounter going to help? He's not the one running Naughty Dog or developing Uncharted 4.

As for those last few paragraphs, lol okay. I have no recollection of ever arguing with you but I'll take your word for that. As far as your "PERSONAL" critique of Shu's performance goes, so fucking what? If you want to post that opinion here, get ready to be criticised.
