The greatest trick that Sony ever pulled was making you believe their western studios didn't exist.
Am I supposed to disagree with that?

It's kind of fucked up how I'm now less interested in the games I was interested in after seeing them on this State of Play.
It was 007 for me. Probably won't play it. So uninspired.

Y own a PC and a Switch when you could have a PS5 and a PS Portal? See, I can be subjective too!

Well, I don't own a PS5 but I do own a PC and a Switch so why would I personally buy a Playstation? Isn't that the purpose of these showcases? They slap a Playstation logo on everything but then I found out I can just get the game on my PC or Switch 🤷

As a showcase for upcoming games it was an overall excellent showing. Gave it an B.

But seeing as it's supposed to be PlayStation centric, I can understand some peoples disappointment.

I was expecting some Ghost of Yotei uncut gameplay, waiting until so late to release some doesn't sit very well with me.
I know it'll probably be more of the same as Ghost of Tsushima but still, I want to see the game in action and we're only a couple of months away from release.

I was also hoping for some Judas but it seems like that game might be dead and buried at this point. Levine just can't help himself and drive projects into development hell.

Wasn't expecting Silent Hill so I was quite happy with that.
Also wasn't expecting 007, looking forward to what IO have to show us on Friday.

MGS3 was also good.

Other than that there were some cool games here and there but nothing I'm too excited to play as soon as it releases.

As a big Lumines and fighting games fan, this has been my favorite SoP in years 8.5/10

Lumines Arise, Marvel Tokon, Sony's arcade stick, 007, FF Tactics remade, Yotei getting its own SoP next month, Pragmata, more free Astro Bot DLC, Thief VR by Eidos Montreal, Ninja Gaiden Ragebound, MGS Delta, Nioh 3, some cool and fresh indies like Tides of Tomorrow, Sea of Merchants, Sword of the Sea, Cairn plus RE2 and RE3 going to the PS Classics.... lots of great and very good stuff coming this and next year for PS and Sony didn't even show tons of their big guns for this period.

I think this SoP is particularly special because by looking at the early FGC impression, I feel they got their own Marvel Rivals and that it may become the best selling fighting game (real ones, Smash Bros isn't included here) ever.

Glad they are making games for me again:

007 First Light
Silent Hill f
Pragmata
TIdes of Tomorrow
Sea Remanants
Cairn
Nioh 3
Ghost of Yotei

All very different from each other in art, graphics and gameplay. Thank fuck souls-like was kept to a minimum.

From a pure games perspective, a B. In terms of 1st party I would rate lower but the Marvel game was a huge surprised and Sony is actually directly involved so ima give them points for that. Overall, it was enjoyable and I didn't feel like I wasted my time at least.

For some reason all the games felt very one-dimensional. Something is just missing from all the shit they showed, it's weird. The vibes are off, or maybe it's all being rushed out the door?

B+.

Very excited for Lumines Arise and Romeo is a Deadman. Plus, there were almost no announcements that were complete skips for me. A lot of varied, interesting concepts and none of the homogeneous AAA slop that usually account for like 60% of these presentations. The best State of Play in recent memory.

yea, it was nice that there was a variety of games. versus other western shows where its like just all shooters

I honestly liked Pragmata and Silent Hill F but everything else from Japan just completely fell flat to me. Nioh 3? meh. Final Fantasy tactics? 2d marvel fighters? rando japanese anime trash. am i supposed to be excited about games like this? This isnt why i bought a PS5. I bought it for their first party which has been completely MIA for fucking years at E3 now.

If i was the head of Sony, i would call Neil, Herman, Cory and the head of each first party studio and force them to fly out to Japan, and explain in person just wtf they have been doing for the last 5 years. Then fire all of them. No questions asked. Incompetent buffoons who cannot provide a first party publisher games to showcase on your own first party conference should not be getting paid. Period.

I like Japanese games. I like Japanese devs. Zelda ToTK, Re4, FF16, ff7 remake, Death Stranding, are all my jam. But honestly, did we see anything even remotely comparable to those franchises? when did Japan = quirky games and last gen looking games? where is kingdom hearts? where is re9? where is DMC?

Hahah what if Judas really did get canned…Ken's standing over some programmer's shoulder losing his mind and changing everything cuz people are sick of roguelites

I think it is coming out eventually, it looked pretty far along/polished.

I gave it a C. Loved Romeo is a Deadman and that silent hill game looks cool. Not much else for me in there. FFT is cool but also a letdown at the same time. They took that long to port the iOS version in the end?

Been loving them ever since I randomly picked the first one up for PSP on launch day
I still find myself humming the songs to that game lol

Kacho Kacho huh? Thats like saying they put Ghost or Death Stranding in "timeout"

I think they are just saving those titles for individual showings...

MGS Delta
Final Fantasy Tactics Remake (FINALLY)
Bloodstained 2
Thief VR
Vanquish 2 Pragmata
Silent Hill f (won't play, but will watch)
Astro Bot levels

What's wrong with some of you?

Bangers from Capcom (Pragmata), Square Enix (Final Fantasy Tactics), Konami (Silent Hill f, Metal Gear Solid Delta), Bandai Namco (not Tearaway, Everybody's Golf) and Koei Tecmo (Nioh 3), as well as a new first-party fighting game by Arc System Works, new Astro Bot levels, a tease of the Ghost of Yotei State of Play, the new -- and finally AAA -- game from Suda51, the next synesthesia game from Tetsuya Mizuguchi -- and it's Lumines! -- as well as Thief coming to PSVR2, cool indies such as Baby Steps, Cairn and Bloodstained 2, a Mortal Kombat collection and the first-ever look at First Light 007 from IO Interactive.

The literal definition of all killer, no filler.

10/10

This. Just garbage after garbage.
How people are rating this As and Bs is just insane. Clearly pubity hasn't hit yet. Have a word with yourselves.

E3 2015 and 2016 were A's. This wasn't even in the same league.
This was a State of Play, those were E3 press conferences. Different expectations.

You can't compare a mid-season Premier League match to a Champions League final.

Felt like a part of the Summer Game Fest more than a Sony showcase, the only first party stuff was a message saying they'd show Yotei in a month?
The Marvel fighter from Arc System Works was first-party, and so were the Astro Bot levels.

When have State of Plays featured more than a handful-party games on average? February one had just Saros, Days Gone Remastered and Stellar Blade DLC; the one in September Ghost of Yotei, Horizon Remastered, LEGO Horizon, Until Dawn and Astro Bot DLC.

That was pretty tame.
Tides of Tomorrow and Marvel Tokon looks cool that I will never play
Sword of the Sea eventually will be played
Other than that 007 First Light has me all in, I liked the art style and trust IOI to do innovative stuff with gameplay. Looks like a proper Single Player game.

Different taste

Pragmata, Final Fantasy, Nioh 3, Marvel, Astro Bot, Lumines, etc. I'll never play. I'm not interested. Tactics and Nioh I tried and got bored on prior releases.

Ghost of Yotei is a maybe, but likely won't play it. Silent Hill I'll likely play. 007 I might play if it comes to GamePass, steep discount or someone gifts me. I won't pay full price for it. Probably won't even pay $30 for it.

I like Thief, but I don't care about VR.

So that leaves me feeling incredibly bored with this SoP. For those into indie games and Japanese games, it was better. I like some indie games and some Japanese games. I've played all Metal Gear mainline games, but I'm not interested in the remake.

D for me.

Lack of first party and variety. Everything felt samey and generic.

Might go for nioh 3, but generally the games showcased were not for me.

Holy shit I didn't realize state of play was happening today.

FFT remaster and finally a way to play classic MK on modern consoles. Amazing

A game Sony paid or made a deal with it's developer to publish is not what i think about when i talk about Sony's first party games not gonna lie.

Some Astro Bot levels is ok but whatever.

Saros was good, same for Yotei i guess, the remasters are also whatever.

On a show from Sony, where third parties showed 007, Pragmata, Silent Hill F, MGS etc, showing some levels from a game released last year and publishing a game from Arc System doesn't sound too exciting, but it is what it is

Marvel fighter is a semi-first party or second party game
. The studio is not owned by sony and the game isnt even exclusive since will come out on PC ... it has the PS studios logo because of X dev is helping with optimization... they only had a 1 min cgi trailer of GOY and nothing more from their top first party studios who remains mostly silent... this dismissal of Sony First Party studios efforts has to stop eventually.

I liked the show because i got to see a lot of good third party games ... and thats it.. everyone with a PC or Xbox or Switch 2 can also like the show just like me.

If I owned only a PC and watched this SOP I would have ZERO reasons right now to purchase the ps5.

Woke up here in Japan and went straight to YT to watch the SoP free of the usual hot takes and retardation. I've always kept it real with these SoPs and now will be no different so let me say it in no uncertain terms: if you love videogames this SoP knocked it out of the fucking park, period. B-b-b-b-b-ut PlayStation 1st party?? Where are the games?? I've posted this in the past but I'll repeat it, the days of showcasing multiple megaton titles in a single event are OVER, get used to it. Sony will reveal these titles one at a time and continue to put out multiple GOTY caliber games every single year.

Now to the SoP. Lumines was a great opening, the return of one of those smaller, quirky games that everyone has been begging for. Pragmata lives and looks great! New raw, uncut cocaine from Suda (I called it within the first 20 seconds of the trailer lol), Bloodstained sequel, in my veins! Tactics finally, oh happy day! Hirogami, more creative stuff on a smaller scale, thank you. MK collection, very cool. Nioh fucking 3, hell yes! Journey devs new project and it will be FREE on PS+? Now we're cooking! Silent Hill f looking 💯. 007 reveal, dope. More free content for Astro, my 2024 GOTY, let's get it. And then the completely unexpected megaton at the end...

Make no mistake, a megaton is exactly what it was. Let me preface this by saying I've long grown tired of Marvel. Thunderbirds was the first Marvel movie I've seen in years and I thought it was mediocre at best. As for games Spider-Man was the only thing I had any interest in and it's because Insomniac always delivers the goods. I had a smile plastered on my face the entire trailer, Arc X Marvel!? Crazy MvC2 energy, that cool Japanese aesthetic, 4 v 4, wow. Here, enjoy a true fighting game enthusiast lose his shit over it lol:

Super hyped, amazing SoP, undoubtedly an A, PlayStation delivered the goods.

So, I decided to check out the Sony State of Play, just for the hell of it. It does help with the void left by E3. Here's my play by play review:

  • Have already forgotten most of the games shown at the event.
  • First game was a 'what am I watching?, yeah I get it' trailer: Pragmata
  • Silent Hill F looks neat
  • Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles - Best surprise. Looks cool.
  • Metal Gear Solid Delta - OK. Kinda interested.
  • Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement - good to see this series is continuing.
  • Thief - Neat... oh wait, it's VR.
  • Sea of Remnants - I thought I was looking at a new Monkey Island game at first.
  • Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection : looks cool.
  • 2D Ninja Gaiden game - Another nice surprise. Possibly a response to Shinobi?
  • Everybody's Golf: Hot Shots - Kinda the game I was most interested in...
  • 007 First Light... It's nice to see a trailer. We'll see how it goes.
The rest: forgotten. Overall, a nice list of third party games... but the majority of these will always be multi-platform? I give this State of Play a B- or C+.

There's a massive creative direction problem in the industry right now. The common thread between all of these games, Tokon notwithstanding, is a serious lack of inspiration.

When it comes to First Light, it's literally just reskinned Hitman. There are certain environments, animations and assets that look like they've literally been pulled out of the Hitman trilogy they just did, and presented everything with the exact same camera angles, lighting and general composition. They've not done anything interesting with the setting, made a less characteristic version of Bond in a visual level, and paid no attention to setting a tone

It's just:
We bald stelth gaem makerz. We make yunger stelth gaem with moar boom boom.

The fact that this show had so much tired shit and recycled games and is getting ratings like this is a very, very bad sign.

Wasn't able to watch it. I had to work a long shift. :(
Read up on all the games posted. Mostly good-looking games here. I suspect it was a B or a B- rating.

Relax your tits, you're the buffoon here since you have no idea what you're talking about.

4 of the last 5 years Hermen broke the sales records of the PS studios games with new titles. And that includes games made by Neil and Cory plus other ones. Also had games that were the ones earning more GOTY awards these years. Plus released many other great and very successful games, plus on top some remasters/remakes, PC ports and movie/tv show adaptations.

Other than this, nowadays the big AAA games take normally around aprox. 5-9 years to be made, sometimes even more depending on different things (covid, new IP, new engine or generation, etc).

Bloodstained sequel, Pragmata and Final Fantasy Tactics remaster all look great but ill be playing them on PC or Xbox. The Marvel game looks awesome but where the fuck is their first party for the most part. Where the hell are the big tent games I got a PS5 for? Well maybe next yr. I know may are happy with Ghost and Nioh buy they are not my bag
