Donkey Kong Bananza Direct has more views than PlayStation State of Play June 2025 and Xbox Games Showcase 2025.

Seems GAF got an enema

Maybe if State of Play had shown games like Ape Escape, Sly Cooper, Jak & Daxter and SSX then it could have been more exciting.
And how would people had known

The number of views of a show with surprise games is not a measure of how interesting are the games, as nobody knew which games.

We should check the views of individual games

Just read the reason for the ban. Fucking brutal.
OOF, he truly went for his own Icarus moment the other day.
P pulicat , Kotaro Kotaro , K K' Dash next on line, baby!

If occasionally shilling for your console of choice was a banable offense, you would be on the same chopping block (and so would I and 80% of this forum). None of those users are are drowning the forum in pages and pages of disingenuous console war spam the way that many of those who have caught bans did.

It seems many people are more hyped by the new Donkey Kong Direct than the latest games showcased by PlayStation and Xbox, as shown by the viewer numbers and likes.
no its just 3 million switch 2 owners trying to justify their mediocre console purchase

Oh, I know shilling is not a banable offense, but trust me when I say that stuff like this goes beyond that:
This GOTY talk is kind of meaningless in the overall picture, especially for Nintendo games, where Western critics always preferred Sony games for media awards.

In 2020, Animal Crossing: New Horizons should've won over TLOU Part 2, but sales metrics fortunately were there to tell the real story between those two games.

2020
TLOU part 2 - 10 million units
AC New Horizons - 47 million units
This GOTY talk is really dumb but sales numbers speak louder than critics awards.
Astro bot - 1.5m
Mario Odyssey - 30m
Ah, the Death Stranding, where the first game sold less than the Kirby game and managed to score many awards thanks to Western journalists for Sony games.

2019 results metascore and sales
Smash Ultimate - 93 MC and 33 million units sold
Death Stranding - 82 MC and 3 million units sold
I think Kotaro is more at a risk by his dumb as fuck threads than anything else.

The same old shtick gets tiring in a while, there's a reason GigaBowser GigaBowser is where he is now.
I really don't understand the stance, GigaBowser is coming back at the end of this month, but others got permanent Bans.

I understand that shilling is something, but the other users you mentioned above tend to spam a lot of threads of their platform of choice and stand damn close to their thinking.

They don't spam as Bad as GigaBowser tho.

People are hungry for Nintendo games on a new Nintendo console.
Every bit of media from them is important.
Honestly the game looked cool but it was not on my radar.
I still watched the direct.
The game looks amazing.
Day one now for me.

Thread is about Donkey Kong but Gigabowser is the highlight.

Back to the topic.
Donkey Kong Bananza direct has surpassed Mario Kart World direct views and likes.
Nintendo of America: 3.3m
Nintendo of Japan: 1.2m

I'm not surprised at all.

Since the 80's/90's they continue to have a brand that's associated with extremely memorable characters that people have been very familiar with for several decades. No matter what any one else says, no other brand can compete with that. Though Sega comes pretty damn close. Playstation is definitely next on the list as they certainly had memorable characters at some points, but nowadays that doesn't really feel like the case. Even moreso with Xbox.

I miss the era where each platform had their own exclusives/characters/IPs you'd associate with each one.

Nintendo = Mario
Turbografix-16 = Bonk
Sega = Sonic
Playstation = Crash Bandicoot
Xbox = Halo

Yeah, it is sad that the other iconic figures in video games fell by the wayside over the years. PlayStation is trying to build that with Astro Bot, but good luck competing with 45 years of nostalgia that Nintendo has.

Right?! Astro Bot is great, and maybe that can be their new thing. Hell, it SHOULD be. But it's hard to not think it'll end up on the wayside someday just like everything else did.

Yeah, no kidding, no one can really compete with that. Everyone knows who Mario is and what to associate him with.

No doubt. I'm a huge Astro Bot fan, but he ain't getting a theme park any time soon.

Live service is what dominates PS and Xbox ecosystem these days. No matter how much PS hardcore fans hyped Astro Bot, the reality is no one in that ecosystem cared and it sold about as much as low efforts Wii or 3DS ports on Switch did. While games like Donkey Kong Bananza will outsell that stuff on like day 1 on a minuscule install base. People don't buy classic games on Xbox or PS anymore, only caring about stuff like CoD.

Do we have sales numbers on Astro Bot? Legit question, I fucking hate the post-TLOU era Snoy, but Astro Bot is the one game I wanted to see doing well. Well, other than Gravity Rush 2, but that was too beautiful for its time.

That explains why Sega was forced out of the hardware business.

I really do wish things were different for the Dreamcast. I'd love to live in a world where Sega still had their own platforms. They had some great IPs too, I still can't believe how many of them they just neglected. They're at least revisiting them sometime soon, hopefully everything is at least decent.

Dreamcast was awesome. My buddy and I played so much SoulCal, NBA/NFL2K, House of the Dead and then a mountain of Capcom 2D Fighters. Plus it gave us Rez which is an all-timer for me.

That's not bad at all for the kind of game it is, I'm sure the budget wasn't sky high either.
Definitely, especially for a semi-new IP.

Iirc Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart had sold 2.7M in early 2022 (before any PC port), and had already turned a profit by then. I'd guess the budget for something like AstroBot would be smaller, so they should've definitely made a profit from it by now.

Some folk are just too serious all the damn time. While I like Xbox more than PlayStation, I will always call them out on bullshit and poke fun at them. It's just video games. Maybe us older folk are just past that pissing contest shit. Like ford vs Chevy stupidity.

I just want to play all the fun games. And only a fool thinks that only one or two of the big three console makers make great games.

I dint know, but for me it just looks like a "good game", but not a great game. I can't imagine it will come anywhere close to the quality of the Mario games.
I still also have my doubts that the Mario internal team made it. People try to argue it's the same engine and it looks very similar, but I think if it would be from the Mario team, there would be more "wow" moments in the footage we have seen.

Man I am so loving this Donkey Kong hype train. I've been waiting so long for the DK series to get the AAA treatment again and it looks like people are really taking notice!

Returns and Tropical Freeze are absolutely amazing with the later being an absolute master piece. But I've always known that without a big ambitious 3D game, modern audiences wouldn't give it as much of a chance.

Man I hope this gets to be one of those 20+ million sellers! It will ensure DK will get major games consistently for the next 10-15 years.

It looks like an awesome game - if it is Galaxy/Odyssey class BOOM!

Astrobot shows these types of games are still GOTY when they hit.

Now that you say it like that... it's true, isn't it? When was the last time a Donkey Kong game got the full "AAA" treatment, backed by Nintendo? Donkey Kong 64?

They cooked. This one is gonna be so fucking good. You gonna find out. I removed my video so it will be a shock to you when this is epic.

Yes indeed. DK64 was coming after the frenzy of the DKC trilogy a generation before and just after the mind blowing Banjo-Kazooie. You better believe Nintendo was ready to let Rare go ham with DK64 and so they did. Beyond Rare being sold to Microsoft, I believe DK64 really damaged the DK brand. My conspiracy theory is that we don't have DK64 on the N64 app is because Nintendo doesn't want newer audiences to associate DK64 with Bananza. Hehehe, at least not until Bananza releases or when the public fully embraces Bananza as the next big thing which was probably Wednesday lol. It's not like the game didn't sell well either or didn't get great reviews at the time but beyond characters or music, if DK64 was successful we would have seen other DK games or franchises take its formula and expand on it. Nobody did, nobody would.

Ever since it's been all spin offs and 2D games. Now each 2D game, Jungle Beat, Returns and Tropical Freeze were phenomenal but I always got a sense that Nintendo didn't want to risk budgeting Donkey Kong like 3D Mario or 3D Zelda.

It's a new day now and DK is front and center about to be S tier again.
