Red Dead Redemption |OT| Whistling Morricone in the desert

Wow, an event I never saw before.

"Hey mister, we got a shipment of dynamite here that needs delivering, interested?"

Was gonna help them, but then I saw there was a container right next to them, so I just opened it and took what was probably to be my reward.

They didn't like that much, started shooting... and apparently forgot they were surrounded by dynamite. Somehow Me and my horse are unscathed, they go flying off the screen like Team Rocket.

I also now have a wagon full of dynamite. Trying to think up a fun way to dispose of it...
:lol I never thought of doing that, I've always delivered the TNT, I wonder what you can do with that wagon :lol :lol

I tried ramming it into a bounty's hideout then shooting it, but didn't work out quite as I had planned. There was absolutely nothing to hide behind so they gunned me down as I was running to a safe distance.

Holy crap, I walked by 2 guys handling some dynamite, 5 seconds later I hear a boom and they're gone.

Then all of a sudden a body drops from the sky :lol

I'm proud of myself; I sliced up 2 Cougars of death consecutively with my trusty knife tonight. I actually had to chase one down because when he tried to attack me and missed, we danced around a bit in a circle while I was wildly slicing. After the first slice to its face, it ran away and I chased it on foot :lol :lol
Got my Master Hunter rank and the world is short 2 ninja cats. :D

So i kept reading all the hype about the entrance into mexico, but then it didnt happen for me. I was so disappointed, I had to settle for a youtube video of it.

Multiplayer needs:

- Bounties like in SP, where you can bring the target in alive with the gang chasing you
- The ability to challenge other players to a one-on-one duel
- Horse racing, and you can use your weapons to "cheat"
- Siege, where you and your posse can hole up as outlaws in any of the gang hideouts or towns and take on consecutive waves of lawmen (hardcore mode - if you die, you can't respawn into your posse until the next wave starts)
- Poker, Blackjack, and Liar's Dice MP tables
- Random events like in SP (stop a villain from killing a whore, escort and protect a lady from bandits, etc)

They need to concentrate on making Free Roam a better "living world" experience, because that's where everyone's hanging out - no one's really playing any of the standard MP matches.

So with that Jenny girl's side mission...

She refuses the medicine, so I lasso and hogtie her, throw her on my horse, ride into Armadillo, and take her to the doctor.

Doctor was closed.

Took her to the saloon and waited a bit.

Doctor opened back up so I drop her at his feet. Nothing happens, Jenny disappears, and the law come at me for kidnapping charges.

I love this game.

Damn, I feel bad that you missed it. I keep multiple save points so if i know i missed something, i can reload. I would replay that mission just to hear the song as I rode my horse.

I really hope for GTA5, because I suspect it's too late for RDR, that they drop the max number of players in a session to 12 or 10 to try to get as much singleplayer content into multiplayer free roam as possible. This could TRULY be 3 completely separate games with Singleplayer, Free Roam, and Competitive each feeling like truly different experiences. There is so much potential in Free Roam, but it just hasn't gotten there yet.

Being able to catch bounties, get drunk, race, play poker/blackjack/arm wrestle, experience random events, hunt against a larger quantity of animals, interact with more NPCs, etc. with other people would be amazing. Right now, it's either doing the Gang Hideouts, or shooting eachother for hours on end. It's fun while the game is still fresh, but can be so much more.

Can someone explain me, how to get all 6 mini-games shown won in the stats menu?

Played liars dice and won 2 times, played poker against one man and got all his money :lol five fingers three times (5 dollars, 10 and 25), got out of blackjack with a profit and beat one man in arm wrestling, but it only shows "Won 4 mini-games"

Anybody?

Pretty sweet that the promotional credit was a real gift card and not just for games as usual.

I also have a spare golden gun code to give away. First PM works so we don't stink up the thread.

Just wanted to say thank you for the code, sorry it took me so long to check my PMs and post back. Site wasn't working for me earlier and I've been busy all day.

The law is kind of a pain in the ass somethings.

I was going for a stroll on my pretty white horse and I see some amigo riding after a wild horse and shooting at him, I can't sit idly by as someone shoots a wild horse so I shoot him directly in the leg with my rifle, knocking him off his horse. I was gonna hogtie him and leave him for the coyote's but he ending up crawling around and dieing so the cops got called on me. I still don't know how to take away my bounty in mexico, dammit.

This game is so awesome, though.

Just jumping in here quick to say this is the best game I have ever played. I'm 39 hours in, just about to finish the story, haven't touched online yet and I'm fairly close to 100% the game shortly after the story mode is complete.

I have spent more time in this game than any other open world game just riding around from place to place because it is actually enjoyable to spend the time doing it. Yes I have used quick travel quite a bit too. But if it's morning time I will go for a ride because everything looks so incredible in the morning sun.

I'm just stunned that a group of people were able to get inside my head, figure out my dream game and then they actually made it. Good for them!

Thank you Rockstar.

Can't wait to finish this up tomorrow.

I think that a sequel to GTAIV, if there's going to be one, needs more missions like the one where you have to help this old dude selling his so called miracle medicine in a bottle. It makes the world feel more alive. It was all very realistic, and it wasn't the standard 'go there, shoot him, chase that, and report back' mission if you know what I mean. It was awesome.

Also, 30+ hours in, and I'm not even in Mexico. I still love just riding around on my horse and enjoying the atmosphere and landscapes. GOTY for me. Abso-fucking-lutely.

25 hours and yeah I just hit Mexico yesterday. There's something so satisfying about the world and just riding on your horse from place to place checking shit out. I think I've warped a total of two times from my camp to wherever.

I can't wait to get up North-East.

Agreed. Free roam is still pretty fun though. A friend and I have spent good chunks of the last few nights just hunting.

Anyone else feel Landon Rickkets is completely based on Wild Bill Hickock from Deadwood, he even sounds like him (if i remember correctly).

Man da war horse is such a beast..

Example 1: Was riding in mexico and some sambreo wearin gringo on a donkey gets right in that path of me and my horse when were hauling balls and we fucking nail this asshole and he goes "uugghhaaahh!!!" and gets launced of his donkey and his donkey gets trampled, it was like a semi truck hittin a mini lol

Example 2: I'm out pickin daisys or whatev for my survivalist shit and a cougar charges me just as I get up from the cut scene, so I panic and draw my gun and before I know it my horse freaks and runs over the cougar and kills it hahaha...

mans best friend .... dog < WAR HORSE! :lol

Just beat the game. Crazy stuff. Hopefully more games take a cue from this in how you make the ending fit into the game itself instead of it being a long cutscene like usual.

Also, found it funny
looting Edgar Ross's body after the credits. Dude had over $400 with him!

As for the ending itself, it was done pretty well. Wouldn't have minded
a happier ending, but it wouldn't have made as much sense. The government just walking away and letting John live his life seemed pretty unlikely from the very start. Especially given the games "Outlaws till the end" tagline and all. I didn't expect the whole Jack thing, pretty cool though. Dressed him up in the elegant suit cause his voice and demeanor doesn't really fit the tough guy bounty hunter or duster looks.

And the newspaper explaining what happened to a lot of the npcs was a nice touch. Shame about Irish, not exactly the most dignified way to go.

Last night was awesome. I was busy killing wolves for my Hunter-challenge, when a guy rides up to me, asking me to help his wife. Gentleman that I am, I call for my horse and ride with him. I get to the wive, I see three bandits and a girl hanging from a tree. While still in full speed on my horse, I engage Dead Eye, target the rope, and the bandits' heads. Marston shoots all targets, woman falls to the ground, bandits' brains are all over the place. Dead Eye disengages and I pull my horse to a stop. I turn around, I'm a good 30 meters away from the tree where they were hanging the broad. At that moment I realize that I shot a rope and three faces while being at full speed. Made me feel like a badass.

This game is just absolutely amazing.

I have officially been sucked into the western environment and atmosphere. Can't get enough...

So many little things to keep you distracted from what you were originally trying to do. Feel like I'm suffering from ADHD now. :lol

The inability for the game to understand context makes it both hilarious fun and annoying

I saw a guy getting chased by some wolves and decide to help. Some helpful Mexican riders came by and also shot at it. As a wolf was coming behind one of the riders, I shot and hit it, never actually hitting the rider himself.

But since I was aiming in his direction, he aggro'd and started shooting my face with a shotgun. I basically had no choice but to kill him, which meant his partner came after me and I had to kill him, as well.

So I got an $80 bounty on me for trying to save one dude.

Yeah something similar just happened to me. I had just gotten to Mexico and saw two people camping so I sat down next to them to hear what they had to say. Nothing too interesting, something about a Spaniard. So I get up to leave and just as John says bye to them, they start shooting at me for no reason at all. It was kind of hilarious but it still sucked to get -100 honor for killing them.

I've also shot cops while they were chasing criminals thinking it was bandits chasing someone innocent. That sucks too.

Buy the 'bandana' and use it when you're not doing missions or lending people a hand. That way your honor and fame won't be affected.

Edit: Am I the only thinking that the map is absolutely not the twice the size of GTA San Andreas? Don't get me wrong, it's huge and all, but sometimes when you pay attention when travelling fro example from Armadillo to another point on the map, and you do not ride via the paths or roads but just straight on, it's not that vast at all.

Shit, I save up to buy a Winshester rifle from the gun store.

Then I go see the marshall to start a mission.

I found a camp and Marston picks a... Winshester from a dead body.

350$ wasted :(

I hope they expand on the multiplayer through DLC. So much lost potential at the moment, only a few hideouts provide the coop experience and a handful of arenas for the competitive multiplayer and then you basically exhausted all your options.

They should add a lot more co-op options, tons of hideouts and events, races, they should let you play the various mini-games with your friends ( Poker, blackjack etc. ) and most importantly; a mode ala cops & robbers, oh yes!

I've had enough of these impressions, Red Dead Redemption will be mine.
Don't need to read too much.

I've read the OP, immediately wanted to buy the game
Entered the boring comparison thread, read a few posts so I could notice that all this comparison thing is not for me
Went to the store, bought the last one and i've been playing this game all week.

That's my first post in this thread but thank you OP for making me buying this awesome game ! :D

I keep forgetting I can use Dead Eye for some reason. Especially in those parts where I'm on a horse trying to shoot other people on a horse. :lol

Yup. Dead Eye saved my cowboy ass a couple of times, especially when being jumped by a cougar, or being chased by a couple of bandits when I'm escorting a stagecoach to some point at the map. But it can also feel like cheating and taking the easy way out though. But the aiming on expert mode is a bit hard too control.

Happened to me too! But you will gain so much money later, that it shouldn't bother you :lol

I think I play more poker then the actual game.

I used to ride everywhere, now I warp. Even though the world building is pretty, there's not much to do apart from the odd stranger quest so I don't miss much.

The mechanics of gunplay are still weird. Dead Eye means I rarely feel threatened, but the cover system is hilariously erratic. The problem with the game is most missions seem to involve going from A to B and shooting some dudes. Sure, lots of games are nothing but shooting dudes, but those games have extremely polished mechanics.

In this game, all I do is wait for a guy to pop behind cover and shoot him in the head. Sometimes I will run to point blank range from some variety, and a different animation. but that's about it.

Enemies might move around a bit, but it's essentially a shooting gallery.

The world building, character, dialogue and voice acting are better then any other Rockstar game I've played. Each location has it's own character with cool, interesting art assets in it.

The economy isn't quite as broken and pointless as it is in Assassins Creed 2, but it nearly is. There's just no sense of scarcity. Compare and contrast the first few hours of Fallout 3, or S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

I also not entirely sure why you get access to one of the fastest horses in the game very early. Makes all the other steeds kind of irrelevant.

For me, games are ultimately about how much I enjoy the mechanics. They are already starting to wear a little thin on me here because of the lack of variety.

berserk_ftw said:

Yeah, wish the game had something to do with all the money you get. Even though I know I don't need it, I still loot every corpse I can, and kill lots of wild animals (though I have a ton of animal parts I never bothered selling, I'd be even more loaded if I did). Have close to $7000 now, probably significantly more if I sold everything.

Ending spoiler:
It was funny hearing John complain that the farm was broke during some of the farm missions. When he had like $5000 in his pocket and god knows how much worth of unsold meat/skin/etc...

That could be so easily fixed. If someone opens fire on you first, particularly if your gun is still holstered then you can defend yourself without getting the law onto you. Doubt it will be patched though.
