GODAAAM

Are all those windows accessible ? Im just imagining perching on a high window and setting up an mg42 raining death and destruction on ruskies.

Oh yes, yes they are.

The game is finally clicking with me. I'm fucking loving it.
The new maps are all great, too.

Tips ? Watch your flanks.. stick together, learn the map, find good vantage points, gain control of the critical spots on the map EARLY.

To start it will help to play games with respawning because you can get more chances. Territory on Apartments is what made the game click a bit more for me.

I am sticking to long range combat as a rifleman which I hardly ever do in other games. Use cover a lot and try to be popping out of different areas. If you keep using the same position you are asking for a well placed bullet, I have been on both sides of that lots.

Of the new maps I saw some have a lot more close range and more routes to take which seems to make the game more accessible. The snowy map is usually about 90% of the players doing nothing dropping like flies all match.

Pretty funny, game has already received two hefty patches and people use the "Oh it's just a glorified demo". Some people just don't deserve to try out Betas, especially from developers who still take the word Beta very seriously.

Can you blame most people? ...it's kind of the thing these days. Most "Beta" trials are usually nothing more than 'glorified' demos. Why so hurt over how other people perceive it? ...the way I see it, even they are contributing in a passive sort of way.

Because people dismissing a game over the technical difficulties during a beta is ridiculous.

Exactly.

This why I'm against pre-order incentive Betas and open betas. Should go back to the days of doing long sign-ups, registering computer specs and signing a document that states you need to effin' understand this is a god damn Beta, with your blood.

I agree with you to an extent. Edit: But again, that is what the nature of some (if not most) "Beta" trials have been this 'generation' -- more of a marketing tool. And when an actual scenario arises where participants are testing a beta (or in rare cases, an alpha) build, it's met with incredible amounts of criticism and not much uh, constructive feedback of any sort. It is simply seen as a near representation of the final product. It sucks... but eh.

Also, Barracks > Grain Elevator

Played Grain Elevator for a bit, awesome map for MG's. Seems to be a lot of people not realising they have to go down two floors to defend after the 2nd or 3rd point has been capped.

How is the game engine and shooting itself compare to other modern FPS engines?

Performance wise, it could probably be better. In terms of shooting, netcode, and hit detection, it's fantastic...possibly top tier material.

Performance wise on my laptop it runs better with similar settings to BC2. I am actually surprised at how well it runs on my 540m with beta drivers. At 720p with most settings medium to high I get well over 30fps, which is acceptable to me. I get no slow down with smoke effects or explosions which is generally where I notice it in other games.

I assume the regular game will have similar performance, but who knows. So far, even with 30ish player games I haven't had slowdown, but it seems like the recent patch has maps that are a bit more hectic. I'll check it out tonight.

For those wondering the nvidia 540m runs gddr3 which is slooooow. I think the 76-7800 series nvidia cards from 2005/6 are the "abouts" benchmark for my mobile chip.

Edit: Waiiiiiit. Asus files with the update? Whatever for?

The reason you don't notice performance drops with smoke, etc. is because there's an option called framerate smoothing that lowers your overall fps to diminish the fluctuations in FPS.

So if you disable that you'll get higher frames, but it wont be as smooth of an experience.

Just in case you haven't been over there yet. TWI are aware of some gremlins in the system, but they're having trouble locking them down, hence the beta and request for feedback from users.

I haven't thanks for the link, I checked it out. But I already got a refund, so my input won't be that useful, at least it's nice knowing I'm not the only one having problems on an outdated UE3 engine.

Ahh thanks for pointing that out. I was wondering what it did but left it alone. I'll load up fraps tonight and play with some settings to see what it can do on a less than desirable system.

One important note about that link

Also to be taken into account is the FoV settings. The game was designed with the default FoV in mind. By changing to that to 90 on a widescreen monitor, your video card will have to render 40% MORE than the default. This will eat frames.

That might explain some large discrepancies between people with the same setups.

I've never played a PC game in my life, but this game has got me all hot and bothered.

I've watched hours of footage so far and I'm weighing up whether to take the plunge and buy a gaming rig.

Red Orchestra 2, just wow. Grain Elevator looks amazing too.

I'm having trouble finding servers. I've got full, empty and passworded servers off, so when I search for Ranked servers I find nothing (76 found, 76 filtered on account of them being all empty). But I've got a few favorites and recent servers with a mild population. Why aren't they showing up in the normal serverlist?

edit: oh it's noted here -> http://forums.tripwireinteractive.com/showthread.php?t=60348

bugged since the patch

use this site and type 'open <ip>' in the console

Played the new maps tonight and they are great fun. I have bloom turned off but sometimes I when I walk outside especially on the grain elevator map it seems a bit bloomy.

I've noticed playing on servers with only around 20 players is great to slow the pace down a bit and get a feel for the game and the maps.

One of the things that bugs me is when you're prone and next to something the game sort of glitches out and won't let you look a certain direction. I suppose it helps to keep your sprite from going through things in the map. One of the humorous things about DoD:S was shooting people's feet sticking out of buildings and killing them.

that did make a big difference for me. sadly it makes the game feel claustrophobic. On the upside it is pretty with everything set to high.

God, Assault + Grain Elevator = my favorite thing. Got 30-some-odd kills with my PPSh and nades! My best round yet!

This game is concentrated orgasm.

Hmmm so the game crashed after about 40 minutes of play and then would crash at the server loading screen. Checked the game files via steam, was able to get in a game and then crashed again after about 5 minutes of play. I don't really have any idea why or what is causing it to make reporting it any use. HMMM :[

Think I'm lucky to get more than 4 kills in a round, it's starting to become an achievement if I even manage to see someone.

To all of the people cancelling pre-orders: Good things come to those who wait. If I see a game has potential, I will give the devs the benefit of the doubt and let them work things out. EVEN IF THIS WASN'T A BETA, which it is.

I could identify with your point of view better if the game was actually out, but it isn't. Honestly I think when things are all ironed out this will be a fantastic online experience, and it makes me sad some of you won't be there to fight along side me because you applied all of these "customer expectations" to the situation.

Well said my friend.
Nowadays a beta is in most cases nothing more than a glorified demo to raise awareness but I believe Tripwire want to genuinely put out a fixed game.

Take more chances. Hunt for locations in a map where it's easy and fast (important) to get to, but people don't expect you.

In Territory for GrainElevator, if you are Russia, try to run all the way to the uppermost tip of the first captureable zone. There's a little building apart from the others there. If you hide behind it and look towards the crashed vehicle, you can see a lot of people coming your way without them expecting it. What also works is making a right when you get there and looking behind you. You can see what looks like a slanted roof, ideally for shooting and ducking away. If you're especially ballsy, you can climb on top of the north building set into the first capturable zone. Too bad the ladder is on the side of the germans, but if you can get up there as a russian, almost no-one expects you to be there.

Game crashes when I try to join a server.
okay so apparently the remedy for the instant crashing is to set your shadow setting to anything but low

i can confirm this and have heard that others were experiencing the same thing

Lovin' elevator and barracks - yet to try factory. Crashed once on me during 1,5h play. Could find servers etc. Shadows are on high, everything else on max. Have the weird performance loss at the first couple of seconds in barracks too - very odd. After that it's smooth sailing.

Played the new maps tonight.

Barracks is without a doubt my favorite of the three. It is a glorious very close quarters clusterfuck. Matches can turn into a bit of a stalemate after Axis has taken the NCO barracks, but it seems fair that the Russians have a better defensive position in this stage of the fight.

Red October factory reminded me a little of Apartments / Gdansk in the sense that it funnels the action into a stretched out areas. I didn't get to attack while I played it so I might be wrong, but I did get the sense that it favored the defenders. I found a couple of great spots to pick off attacking Ivans.

Grain elevator looks awesome. It is a giant maze though. I played it quite a bit, but my mental map of it is still very incomplete. It also basically begs to be camped. But that is nothing that a little smoke won't fix.

God I am loving this game so far. I can't wait to see all the other maps.

I think so. TWI also talked about guest passes.

I'm actually having a lot of trouble figuring out the Factory so far as an attacker. The defenders have a lot of open space to set up camp with. I've only played it twice, both times as an attacker(I think artillery was also disabled on the server one time), but I don't think we ever got the second capture point. Only played it twice and haven't figured out the best method of moving through, but so far it seems pretty hard as an attacker.

I wish people realized that you CAN vote different maps other than barracks. You have to mouse scroll to select a diff map.

I get 55~60fps on my Phenom2 965/460GTX on high settings in 1080p.

Whoa... I have a Core i7 930 and a GTX 580 and am getting like 40 fps on high (though 2560x1440). Ultra settings are unplayable for me.

Doesn't seem a good idea. It's not going to win over people in it's current state. I'm getting incredibly annoyed with bullets going missing. I haven't even began on the performance on a 580.

so apparently i've been gimping my gpu for ages using d3doverrider and since turning it off i run this game super smoothly on everything ultra, shadows medium, aa low

radeon hd 4890
4gb ddr3
i5 750 2.33 ghz

Bullets going missing? What trickery is this?

Having some serious issues with bullet reg since the last patch: Lying down, aimed down my sights and he's running at me two shots don't register from about 50m then 30m. Not sure if it's a server issue but I'm not the only person having issues.

I got my issues sorted out and I'm getting 50-60 fps on average.

Mostly Ultra settings, some High, some off.

FOV=90
1920x1080

AMD 6950 (shaders unlocked)
i5 750 @ 3.3 Ghz

I can't say I have had any issues with that. In fact the hitboxes are better than in most games. Some shots don't register with my rifle, but I am not confident to claim that they are all hits anyway. Will need to see some testing on this in a controlled environment.
