As a Cowboys fan, I always root for the whole division in other games... I never root against a rival for the sake of standings in the division race, I'd rather my team get a wild card from a strong division then win a weak division. How do you Redskins and Eagles fans feel about this? My redskin fan friends can't understand my logic.
Oddly enough, I actually agree. The NFC East being the dominant division in football from the early 80's to mid 90's is what helped the Redskins, Giants and Cowboys amass eight Superbowls during that span. When the gang is strong, you're strong. I'd love nothing more then to see the division get back to those glory days. While I don't exactly root for the other teams to win specific games, my general hope is that they're all decent to good so that NFC East aura can return. Hell, I've even rooted for the Eagles the last couple years, just so they can complete the Superbowl winning set. And you're right, I couldn't care less about the Redskins beating the Cowboys if my dogs are 10-3 while the Boys are 4-9.
Rivalry games aren't nearly as fun to win if that rival isn't good. As a Toronto Maple Leafs fan, I'm glad that the Montreal Canadiens are finally decent again, as it makes those games more meaningful. As an Arsenal fan, I'd like to see Tottenham become a better club so those matches become more impactful. To me, it's just more fun.
This would've never applied to the Cardinals though, as they've sucked since time began and aren't a legit rival to anyone. Good riddance to that shit team.
