Even to train completely they are going to need to fly those Migs which will only cause them to get shot down faster...

Basically once those planes leave the ground they will be shot down... if they get that far in the first place

Disappointed at the lack of "20 minuters" references

As a Swede I say good luck to them if they intend to fly against the US Air Force. I hope the US pilots enjoy their target practise. :D

The best thing they could is strap all sorts of explosives to it and try to crash it into a military base. Even that would have about a 0.0001% chance of success.

Let's keep underestimating them.

In a situation like this? Absolutely. Having a highly visible and orthodox method of attack is what ISIS very specifically doesn't want. America's military is prepared very extensively for this kind of stuff. This is a fucking breeze in comparison to uprooting a guerrilla terrorist organization from a group of civilians.

If they want to try and attack with this kind of strategy? Let 'em. Those planes will get torn apart the second they hit the air. The military could even destroy them before they leave the tarmac, but what's the fun in that?

I don't see them attempting to develop a competitive pseudo-conventional air force, rather I think it's more likely that they could use what they have for suicide attacks.

I don't have a lot of faith the USA military to a lot of things right. But maintaining air and sea superiority is one of them.

Hopefully this won't be picked up as a major development in western news. Lack of training and equipment to service the planes will make this a non issue.

I could almost see our military allowing ISIS planes into the air just to give our pilots some easy kills. When was the last time any of them had a chance to score some real air to air kills? That's massive bragging points for those guys and gals.

But, more likely, they would blow the planes to hell while they're on the ground, and whatever facilities are used to maintain them. Airfields tend to be pretty visible targets.

But the point is moot because this is probably blown out of proportion and they more likely have nothing of the sort. If they did, it would just be a massive waste of money and time.

I am eagerly awaiting to hear about their properly sized airstrip from which to field these fighter jets that won't be an easily bombed target.

are these ISIS fighters really as stupid as many here seem to assume? just because they lack resources, that doesn't necessarily mean they're idiots. i'm sure they've accounted for some of the things you guys are mentioning.

Nope.
There's no way a militia can learn how to fly these things like that. The amount of training and flight hours needed to be even a little bit competent is beyond what these guys have right now.
Its worrying that they have access to such hardware, but i don't believe for one moment they are capable of piolting jets.

They'll probably just drive em around and shoot missiles. Plane-tank.

The rank and file fighters? I can believe, but the officers I believer are pretty smart and dangerous.

The thing is, even for really smart, really capable, really sane people, fielding a modern air force is an incredibly difficult task. Members of ISIL very rarely satisfy more than 2 of the above criteria at a time :p

Iraq had the largest air force in the region (500+) during the Persian Gulf War. Additionally, their air force had extensive training and experience because of the Iraq-Iran conflict.

Tell me, how did that work out for them?

The only threat is turning them into a kamikaze type deal to do some damage somewhere they otherwise would not get near.

Even that is a long shot. The luckiest break ISIS ever had was that its main opponents are arab national armies. A kurdish militia of women and old men has grinded them to a standstill in kobane for the past month (US air strikes up until 4 days ago were pinpricks, 2-4 a day if that).

Without constant expansion, the ISIS myth starts to whither. Expect them to flail around, try to consolidate Anbar, and then begin the long unraveling.

And I have a bunch of knives in my kitchen but that doesn't make me a master samurai. The flies hovering over the dog shit on the side of the street pose a bigger threat than those monkeys lmfao.
