That's ugly. The controllers buttons look bloated like they're made for 5 year olds and the controllers are just too small.

Well every dollar you shave off a device that you project to sell 60 million of, means 60 million dollars of profit straight into your pocket. So the saving would definitely be there. But I feel that just one game with nice AR functionality could offset that.

Emily Rogers posted a wrap up of things we should expect in the retail NX version.
TL;DR: No Camera on portable NX. At least 2 shoulder buttons. Battery life doesn't sound great. NX launch in March, is ahead of schedule. More at the link.

It saves on:
Camera + Lens
Microphone
Wiring + boardspace
Power Draw
Bezel/Plastic (If you want as little of this around your screen, a camera adds a good 0.5cm by necessity to fit the lens which is then added to the entirety of one face of your screen's bezel... and then symmetry demands it be on the opposite side of the bezel as well!)
Its a lot of little things that, at the end of the day, could shave 5 to 10$ off the BoM at economies of scale as well as have other beneficial advantages for overall size and general internal considerations.
But this is still clearly dev kit info.

My favorite part about "ahead of schedule" is the software implications. They wanted a huge launch so they must have quite a few first-party games ready to roll.

I think the biggest news is going to be the price. I have a feeling it's going to be a surprise to a lot of people. I'm still feeling $199.
Damn Nintendo was right about their competitors wanting to copy them.

That would be a fair price! I could buy the NX and maybe one or two launch titles.
But it also means no AR, and I'm not sure if I can believe that.

True, but the Wii U should have received a price-drop by now as well and clearly Nintendo doesn't care enough. 3D screens also still cost them a lot I'd wager.

The more I read about it, the more I feel its a large portable with TV out.
edit: If Nintendo want people to treat it also as a console, they need to include a home only large controller so people can use it comfortably on the couch.

While interesting to discuss she's the only one who reported this for now and she clearly states we should take it as a rumor. It's why I didn't make a thread earlier. By now we've discussed it for a few pages, too. I added it to the op earlier so anyone who comes to the topic will hopefully see the updates.

Given Emily Rogers's most recent post (assuming it's all true), I can't picture this being priced at anything less than $250, especially with New 3DS XLs still sitting around $200. Yet, anything above $250 is going to be a tough sell in this market.

Probably because it's common knowledge at this point and she's already mentioned it a bunch of times in the past.
It won't be included, but it's probably a given that an NX pro controller will be made available for purchase.

I'll bite at handheld price, $199.
If they put the Pascal Tegra inside, which is reported to be in the final design, that chip is 60% more powerefficient, meaning it will drain the battery much less (as the GPU is typically a big power hog). It also means it will not get as hot as its older counterpart. Meaning it will likely not need to be actively cooled, meaning no fan running off the battery either. So not only does the chip need much less juice, it also doens't need a fan to keep cool which would otherwise again hog the battery. So just by going with a new Tegra, you can improve battery life tremendously.
In that case you'll be glad to hear they'll be supporting the 3DS for another 2 years.
A camera and mic cost pennies. It makes no sense not to include them. They could be used for all types of apps, social apps, puzzle apps (remember the DS games that had you blow in the microphone), AR games (Pokémon Go)...
The 3DS will drop in price when the NX comes out, you can bet on that.

It would be too expensive. Remember Nintendo is going for something cheap that can appeal to casuals and price must be considered.

Personally, I think it makes no sense to include them.
Very few apps are going to access the camera or the mic, and TV-connected use cases likely won't access them at all.
New 3DS XLs are $200 because Nintendo wants to actually profit off some of their hardware before NX comes out.

The Shield TV goes for $200 with a likely high profit margin, featuring a similar SoC. Nintendo can sell this at cost or with a much slimmer margin hopefully for $199-$225, seeing as how adding a screen is cheap as hell these days. The only other major components which are different are the motion controllers and the batteries, and motion controllers cannot be expensive these days. Batteries and storage will likely determine the cost.
I'm gonna hope for $199 at this point, bracing for $250 at the maximum.

I feel like they want to redefine the tablet. The 3dsxl is larger than what most can fit in their pocket as is. I think Nintendo wants to make a device that has several uses other than just gaming. It creates a reason to use it other than gaming so you always have it with you. Nintendo wants to transcend the living room experience imo.

I would assume it means less than what the 3DS has now. 3DS is about 5-7 hours with full screen brightness and 3D and wifi on.
So I guess by that metric the current device only lasts under 5 hours.

Oh, I see what you're saying. I thought you meant the TV out port on the actual handheld controller.
As for the price, I just feel like the MCV rumor seemed pretty confident about them going for a surprisingly low price, and that matches the rumor that hit early last year as well (that Nintendo wanted a mass-market priced system that appealed to impulse buyers).

So wait, why doesn't this mention a dock? I haven't been following things too much, but I thought that detail was confirmed?
I wonder if the dock comes at a later time, and will be the NX's version of a Neo/Scorpio evolution.
The battery is a bummer, but I most interested in playing it docked and on my TV so I can live with that.. but it's kinda antithetical to what they're trying to do. Hopefully that changes.
Also, no shoulder triggers is a bit of a deal breaker for me. But I guess that just depends if this is meant to be a handheld with TV play, or a console and handheld all in one.
Hell yeah man, Nintendo is gonna go ham. I still believe if the Wii U had had Splatoon and/or Mario Maker at launch, it would now compete with Xbox One sales. Which isn't terrific, but better than nohing. It simply lacked killer apps.
Looking like Nintendo is addressing this concern first and foremost though!

It makes no sense NOT to include them, since they take virtually no space and cost next to nothing.

6.2 inches is a pretty big screen. By comparison the Ipad Mini is 7.9 inches and most modern smartphones now are between 5 and 6.
The whole point of this device in my mind is to transcend the living room. If you dont want to play it on the portable you can keep it at home and play it on the TV.. If you ever wanted to travel or take it with you.. you can.
If the rumors are true and it is 1 sku, not region locked, same games... You have a device that if you wanted could go anywhere and if you want to keep it at home you can.
Everyone keeps saying this idea is a gimmick.. but is it really a gimmick ?

The lack of a camera on the controller has me 90% certain that the TV attachment is real and will be packaged with the unit. Perhaps that's where the "This feels like somewhat of a novelty" comment was about.
