Republicans panicking now that Trump's nomination seems like a realistic possibility

They made the monster, they fed him ammo, they kept him running, they sent everyone using the same playbook as Romney and McClain. It's their fault.

Hillary running against someone who draws comparisons to Goldwater. We've come full circle.

That's the problem, though. You'll be left with a small but significant minority that is full of rage and has no political power because of it. I'm worried how they'll react.

If they can't win with ballots they might try to with bullets.

Considering the rise of militia due to a black president, i would think this is a legit concern

It doesn't matter which Republican gets nominated. Most of them are pretty crazy and Bernie will trounce them all when he becomes President.

As long as the GOP continue to do well in mid-term election, their will always be strong resistance in the party to change course. They look at the results of the mid-terms and say to themselves "Everything's fine. No need to change course."

That's what I'm guessing. We're going to see more rebellion. More violence, more state-level resistance to federal policies, more rhetoric from politicians trying to leverage this kind of situation.

It'll be especially bad when they try to react/rebel at lower levels of government, but federal judges - appointed by Democrats - repeatedly intervene.

I gotta say, I live in a republican area and a lot of people love him. I think a Dem is going to take it, hopefully Bernie, but if Trump gets the nom Dems definitely have it locked up.

How the hell is Trump anti-establishment? He's a rich white dude, you don't get more establishment than that.

He's in the lead because he's pandering to racists and sexists, which is the real Republican base. Nothing more, nothing less.
Establishment in a political election = politicians. He rails against politicians. Ergo...

What can I say but lol. They had this coming. You push extremes and the extremes are what you'll get in return.

I would laugh to tears if is goes the FDR route for the dems

You reap what you sow.

Nearly a decade of letting your once outlying extremist supporters become the limelight of your party.

Your supporters that are continued to be riled up to the point that they commit domestic terrorist acts that make them no better than ISIS or any other non-Christian terrorist group that you demonify.

lol. Look at polling in past elections this far out. Look at who actually won the nomination. Look at the number of endorsements per candidate.

Although imagine a Trump/Fiorina ticket

I did as you said and I found this at the top of their Politics section:

Trump leads national primary polls among Republicans any way you cut it. He has already lasted much longer than a lot of people (including me) thought he would. It wouldn’t be shocking to see him break the old rules when it comes to polling as well. All we can say for certain right now is that Trump’s standing in live-interview and non-live-interview polls differs significantly. We’ll have to wait to see which is more accurate, or if the gap shrinks the closer we get to the primary.

Yeah, look at it:

Romney was the only candidate to maintain in the polls, this time it's Trump, only it's more decisive.

Nate Silver was one of the few to read the polls and tell it like it is. He is a terrible pundit.

No really, look at this:

That is REALLY weird.

They fucked with their base for too long.

In 2012 they promised the Tea Party, Evangelicals and right wing radicals if they just swallowed their Romney medicine they'd feel better in the morning and their socialist commie Muslim headache would be gone. But it wasn't; Romney got trounced.

Then in 2014 they promised if they just took back the Senate, cementing their control of Congress, they could repeal Obamacare, pass the Keystone Pipeline, halt the liberal agenda, etc etc. Well they got Congress back but Obamacare hasn't been repealed, the Keystone Pipeline was vetod, and now the US is a genderless dystopia with mandatory gay marriage, surrendering to Iran and Cuba.

So Trump comes along and promises them the world and decries all the losers in the GOP and how he'll get shit done starting with all those people who speak Spanish near you and make you feel uncomfortable when you go to Home Depot and of course things are where they are.

The top Republican for endorsements is Jeb! Bush at 41 points.
The top Democrat for endorsements is Hillary Clinton at... 452 points.

The thing you've gotta understand about the Republicans is they talk a big game but they can't do shit. They don't even accomplish their own goals! They actually increase government spending! I mean, if you're going to fuck up, at least fuck up in your own way and not the way you specifically say your opponents are going to fuck up.

Sorry but Republicans hate Nate Silver. They might go with Trump just to let him eat crow.

Yup

Hey GAF I'm not trying to be a smartass but could someone explain how America's corporate oligarchy is threatened at all by a Trump or Clinton presidency?

Its not. Fixing that would require a major overhaul of congress as well, at minimum. You'd need to elect like 300 congressman who would go along with Bernie Sanders along with Bernie himself

The best we can get right now is a Clinton presidency that doesn't rock the oligarchy too much but at least works to do what it can to improve the lives of the people stuck in it

Don't both the Democratic 2008 and 2004 elections contrast with their point though? It appears in both the candidate that was nominated had less than others until Iowa, at which point they pulled a turn around. So its just as possible for endorsements to be the result of getting close to the nomination rather than the other way around.

From the NYtimes article

But the same reason the senator insisted on anonymity explains why, just two months before the Iowa caucuses, there has been no such ad campaign: To step up in that way would be to invite the wrath of Mr. Trump, who relishes belittling his critics.
Trump bullied and shamed the establishment into shutting up. He struck real fear into these people. These are the same people that always like to talk tough and prove how manly they are.

Incredible.

I hope that someday history looks at donald trump as the point where the american political system became 3 parties - Democratic, Moderate Republican, and the eventually marginalized and irrelevant tea party.

It won't last unless we switch to something like rank order voting.
