I used to date an immigration lawyer for a hot minute a couple of years back. In the US (not sure about Canada) but if green card marriages end in close proximity to the 24 month mark that's required for the status to become permanent it automatically triggers an investigation. These don't happen right away because of a backlog, but if it's found that the non-resident was the reason behind the divorce there are some cases when legal immigrant status is revoked. Due to that back log it can be after several years of them living in the country single, or even in another relationship.

The loophole, which is apparently very well known, is that if the divorce is initiated by the American citizen or filed as joint dissolution then no investigation is triggered and the file is closed with no changes to citizenship status. For this reason when she was dealing with clients who confided in her that they couldn't stand their husbands, but wanted to stay she would always advise them to stick it out until the required two year mark, then do whatever they needed to have their spouse leave them.

It's pure attention whoring. She said a few posts in that she didn't mean to make the thread to get a bunch of "you should do this" posts meaning the goal was either to get attention, or to convince people to donate cash.

In some very, very rare cases writing threads like this can be cathartic. Venting to the internet, especially to a community that you like being a part of can certainly help, but her follow up posts make me think this wasn't that.

One dude sent me money. I told him I'd rather earn it, like make a custom video or something but he turned it down.

I wrote it to vent because attention/validation is sweet nectar, and i'm post-blocked from fb for a bit. I am often writing similar things there just to get it out of me and process it.

I know I'll get unwanted attention if I make a thread, but I wanted to vent AND in light of the some of the recent suicide threads I've been reading there, I wanted to show that there are more effective ways to support someone having suicidal thoughts.
