I've been thinking about how bizarre Era is as a "quintessential gaming forum" and supposedly big entity in the gaming world. I don't mean in the sense that it's very left and strict, you can find that kind of thing elsewhere, but rather how on the fringes it is as far as general opinion and specific rules go when compared to the rest of the hobby.
Their banned game list consists of games that other known entities have zero trouble reporting on nor do they judge the audience of said games. People from both Gematsu and Siliconera post on Era and aren't even far removed from the political consensus there, but they can't post some of their articles because of the banned game list. This isn't to say Era is the only place that does this, but it's largely irrelevant on that front compared to, say, Twitch when they started banning certain games, and even that doesn't stop discourse or people playing Youtube-bait stuff like Huniepop and praising it elsewhere on the internet.
Then you got individual personalities like Youtubers, journalists, and specific game developers. Colin Moriarty is a banned topic, and yet praised personalities like Cory Balrog and Neil Druckmann (both of whom have an account there I believe) are happy to interact with him on Twitter and in person. Another example is Cr1tikal, who has directly called out Era on his podcast as a nuthouse alongside his not so PC guests and cohosts. He's now one of the most important entities in the Smash scene thanks to hosting big tournaments during the pandemic. I also recall Jontron and how he cut an ad with Justin Roiland over some game, a game that at least one Era member worked on. And nothing really needs to be said about people like Boogie or Pewdiepie, also banned topics that no one outside that bubble will really condemn, at least in any large numbers. Both of whom are also friends with Geoff Keighley, who is unarguably one of the bigger personalities in gaming at this point thanks to TGA. Also Dunkey, though for whatever reason he seems to get a pass despite probably not knowing Era even exists and definitely not playing to that kind of audience.
I think this should kind of tell you how hollow and fake Era's "influence" really is. Supposedly exiled personalities aren't exiled at all, games that you can't talk about have their audience, companies move ahead with things that piss the place off even if there's occasionally the illusion of them being capitulated to, etc.
