Resident Evil 4 - Gamespot Review

But the question remains...

...is it better than RE2? Will RE4 dethrone all REs before it?

I say why the fuck not.

Are there any spoilers?

That bastard spoiled Halo 2 for me back in November. Want to be sure before reading anything he writes.

None. I wouldn't watch the video review though... I haven't seen it but it's bound to have them.

:lol at the video review.

It's like 5 minutes of non-stop gushing. I thought for a second there the guy was going to say "its better than sex".

Essentially, if you've been entertained by any other mature-rated action game recently, then chances are you'll be blown away by this one. It's that good.
High praise, although I wonder if he had any specific mature-rated games in mind.
(Ooh, controversy!) *wiggles fingers*

You poor bastards. It's been so cheap in the UK for so long, I think they just can't get anyone to buy it or something.

Maybe it's not as common as I think, but I always notice it because of its awesome boxart, so I know I've seen it quite a bit.

I have never seen RE:0 on a shelf in Australia, if a get a Nintendo console next gen it will be a import. I am going to make sure I pre order RE: 4 coz I don’t think you will be able to get it in Australia if you don’t.

Anyone know a PAL release date coz I can’t find one.

March 18th is the date Nintendo of Europe are giving for the PAL release. THQ Asia Pacific have distributed both GCN Resident Evil titles in Oz, both of which have been released ahead of Europe.

So if THQ are distributing RE4 over here, there's a good chance we'll get it before or if not, just after Europe.

So fucking hot. Unlike the RE4 box.

What happened to that good RE4 art anyway? Is that the JPN box or something?

The game looks great any everything... but is it scary?
Nothing i've seen so far looks frightening to me. It's more of an action game.

I'll have to pick this up and judge for myself.

Watching the video review, it seems like RE4 is scary in a different kind of way, because of the way the camera is positioned, it gives a feeling of claustrophobia when enemies start to close in around you.

IJoel: The video review isn't so bad. Just a bunch of different locations showing Leon shooting things. No story elements revealed, unless you count environments as spoilers.

That video made me want to get the game. I think it was the music.

It's not so much scary as it gets your adrenaline pumping. I love just the demo for that cabin part
where they bust down the doors, put ladders to the second story, and climb through the windows.
It's intense.

Great review and great score.

If RE4 featured true analogue control and fast weapon swapping I wonder how much of a difference it would have made to all these scores. They are about the only real complaints (and minor) about the game.
Maybe its by design to add more tension, fast weapon swapping would make the game easier and less realistic.

I hope the Players choice box art isn’t screwed up by silver borders, but yeah that’s sexy!

THQ Asia Pacific distributes all Capcom releases in Australia so yeah the game will come here but probably in small numbers. You should be able to at least order one in if you can’t find it on shelves.

don't worry, the players choice box will only hit the shelf when RE4 for PS2's released :lol

The most screwed up thing is Mikami has just made his masterpiece and he's probably quitting Capcom or at the very least getting demoted.

:lol

Ah ... the soap opera of video game politics.
that's just sad if true........

HOLY SHIT!!

I never did like the RE games because I'm not a big fan of horror games (yeah, call me a wuss, if that makes you happy) but these scores are too hard to ignore.

I mean, a 9.6 from Gamespot? The hell......

Shocking isn't it. Wuss, you said if it makes me happy.
:D

Basically this game rules. I dont take anything Matt says, but for the mega-ultra low scoring kasavin to score this so high means its gotta be killer.

Looks like Capcom tickled Gamespot's G-spot
:lol :lol

I was so impressed by the Gamespot review I went post-haste to Gamestop.com and preordered the Collector's Edition. No tax and no shipping, plus I don't have to hassle with driving to the next city over to get to the closest Gamestop.

That score seems so absurdly high... but then you watch that video review, and it seems so much more intense than anything else on the market (those shots where Leon is shooting a wall of enemies that's 4 enemies wide are nerve wracking in the extreme... I dunno how I will cope doing those parts!) that it seems too low!

It's really disappointing it couldn't get released last year to get GOTY!

Anyone from another country imported from Gamestop before? i need to know

Exactly the same boat. I was at the checkout, about to confirm the order, and then I realised about import duties and the like. And there's no way to ask them to mark down your package, might end up going for the regular version from VGP...

Have you played the demo? There's even more coming at you at once.
At one point I retreated to the outside roof. I heard the chainsaw guy coming, but was busy blasting people with my shotgun. I was so busy shooting the bastards coming through the window that someone on the ground behind me threw an ax and hit me in the back, killing me.

Yet it's not enough to call Resident Evil 4 one of the high points of the series, because this is probably the single greatest horror-themed action game ever created

Those are pretty bold words there, Mr. Kasavin :D

The idea of Zelda getting a lower score than this is kind of insane! Imagine the forum outcry that would occur! :lol

And half of it would be by ME!

I think Wanda, possibly GT4, Zelda, and RE4 will be the GOTY contenders this year.

GT4 and RE4 will never make it... GOTY in Jan? hahah not likely... might be great games but like the Oscars there is always a GOTY push at the end of the year...

True, true. Though KOTOR made the rounds in 2003 nicely despite coming out in the first half of the year.

For the GAF awards, those will probably be the top four unless something surprises everyone.

Wow, RE4 is shaping up to be the Ninja Gaiden of this year. That is, a game I was never really excited about turning out to be one of the best titles I'll play during its respective year. The fact that Greg reviewed it (just like Gaiden) has me even more excited, as I generally find his opinion to be quite in tune with my own...

Can't wait!

Yeah that is true too... but you listed like 4 games from the first half of the year... plus KoTOR always had the second half release on the PC... But it could happen... just I don't think it will :)

You do have to remember that both games barely missed 2004 releases and would have been worthy contenders then, so I see no reason why they stand any less chance of receiving 2005 GOTY honors (besides the possible state of some voters' long term memories :P).
