Nah, that is how it works, they even tell you that in the in-game manual.

I didn't think we were talking about being able to do a tri-attack at all, it was the ability to have all three members actively involved. I was under the impression that unless the target enemy was inside the triangle, only the two closer people of the triangle would actually shoot.

Well, sorry for giving wrong information then.

Anyway, I'm on chapter 3, and the game is good. But as far as I can tell, it's pretty much built solely on the battle system. Sure, you can customize your guns, and dress up your characters, but the story, thought lighthearted and fun to watch, isn't very deep (so far). I've basically been running errands and whatnot for people, with random "deep mysterious" cutscenes in between that mean nothing to me right now. That isn't to say I'm not enjoying the "story" so far; I love the little quips and banter between the three people, and I genuinely laugh with them. But beyond the battles, I'm starting to believe that the actual game is rather thin.

I'm not really complaining about it, just an observation at this point.

the game is grind-friendly.. but still optional at least on normal difficulty. You may have to do some grinding on the Zenith difficulty where enemies have 5x HP and 5x attack.

One thing I noticed on the new game+

after you complete the game and choose a new game on a new difficulty, you get to keep the two black Neverland hexes (the post-game dungeon).

Just finished my review.. spoiler free.

Switching targets during a Hero Action is clunky and hard to control. After killing a target during a HA, the computer likes to select the farthest target from your character instead of the closest, which is poor design. The developers should have added the ability to set 4 target markers on enemies that you could switch between with the 4 shoulder buttons during a Hero Action.

Oh my God, yes, this would be such a dream come true. As much as I'm really loving this game I can see room for improvement in the systems, and this one particularly would be amazing.

The tedium doesn't bother me, though, and thus far I really am enjoying the approach to the story (only in Chapter 3, though).

All 3 characters are involve during Tri-Attack, but the farther you are from the opponent the less time you have to charge. If you notice when you are in a Tri-Attack (Triangle shape attack) your aim circle is divided in 3, you can see each character charge accumulation. So if you only have 2 characters with 1 or more bullet on the side of the aim circle, only those 2 are the ones that managed to charge to attack, the other one will just continue running. I bet you aren't charging a lot in Ch3, but you might start doing so, its really useful.

So all 3 members are actively involved in the attack, is just that you might had gotten hasty and started shooting ones 1 character had 1 charge and the rest didn't. I learn that the bad way too. :lol

Ah, I didn't realize the same applied to tri-attacks. I know it's normally farther is slower, but I rarely ever tri-attack, so I guess I haven't used them enough to realize the same applies. I guess that's what gave me the impression that sometimes one character doesn't participate.

Is this game giving off a huge Shadow Hearts vibe to anyone else? Bits and pieces of the aesthetic, some of the humor, the "panic" after losing Hero Gauge (and the accompanying dynamic music changes in battle)... Just a lot of little things that add up.

About twenty hours in, and this game has a pretty good shot at being my favorite RPG of the current gen. I'm very, very impressed here. Ah fuck it. I'll do a "Keep It" at Gamefly.

Just remember if you HAVE to make a big tri-attack and it is blocked off by some damn barrier. switch to that person and make sure you JUMP! that way he/she doesn't hit the wall and stop. Don't forget the other people because they sure can hit the wall too :lol. Works great if you aren't button crazy and manage your team.

Yep.. the greatest enemy in the game isn't a huge lumbering post-apocalyptic beast.. it's a wall.

Sega shipped VERY small quantities.

Another Valkyria Chronicles?!

I'm beginning to think that Sega has no intention of selling incredible high numbers. More like they intend to sell enough copies to satisfy the niche market only.

C'mon Sega! I really want you to succeed!

This is what I get for buying late. Ordered it on Amazon on the 18th, but it has yet to ship.

Shipping estimate is listed for tomorrow. I was really hoping to get this soon for the upcoming weekend ;(

Better to sell out a limited print run and potentially drive up demand for another run then over-ship and have the game hit the bargain bins a month or two after release.

This game is a prime target for black friday/boxing day sales and end of year bargain bins.

This is not the kind of game that would ever sell in incredible numbers, or that would ever sell outside of the niche market at all. They'd probably be best off catering to the niche market the way Atlus does.

2.5 hours in and starting to get the hang of it a little better, the Tri-attack was confusing the hell out of me at first.

Little ways off for that yet.

I just started chapter 3. Is there a way to know how difficult a "red hex" fight is going to be before going into it?

I did a ton of work unlocking lots of hexes, and all the fights were totally manageable around the red hex. I entered it, and there is an enemy in there that completely decimates my team. And, I can't use a goddamn escape gem to retreat, so all of my work up to that point was lost. Why does it sometimes let you use those and sometimes not?

So frustrating.

You can't use an escape hex in a room with enemies remaining.

What I suggest is setting up a station hex near the nearest elevator so you have a quick spot to rest/save at. You can buy station hexes at the Ebel city guild.. it doesn't really matter what color you pick although red is a good choice because you'll probably have a lot of those saved up.

If you're fighting the dolled-up dwellest, here's a no damage, no item strat. Kite him with your MG user in manual mode - his melee dive is avoidable if you keep running. Once he attacks with his melee dive, cancel back to your MG user (by pressing B/circle) then hit him with 3-4 charges of MG fire while it gets back up from its melee dive. Position your HG user behind your MG user to get off a HG shot and cash in on the scratch damage. Keep kiting back and forth and it will go down eventually with no risk of damage or items wasted.

Oh I didn't realize you could buy those station things

I'm on ch 3. I'm like lvl 7 and I go to this red hexagon and next thing I know i'm fighting some lvl 44 mech thing. Took like 5 tries, finally beat the bastard.... was really really close.

I'm in chapter 5 and 34 hours in.

This is probably one of my favorite--if not favorite--JRPGs. I can't believe how fucking amazing it is.

I love it so much.

So my friend visited all weekend and then I spent all of today completing God of War 3. Eagerly awaiting to get back into this game more starting tomorrow when I wake up, but I had one question for those who have completed it.

How does the story sit with you in comparison to tri-aces other games and other JRPGs in general? No spoilers please, but just an impression of your take on the quality of it as a whole and why it is that good/bad/mediocre,etc.

This game looks very interesting and the combat seems to be pretty funky from the youtube videos I've seen. How are the graphics/sound and the OST?

I got to chapter 2. Enjoying this quite a bit. Excellent battles, good humor, really weird worldview, pretty cool art direction. Great music too.

well this came out a few days early that expected here (aus). Been playing a bit and i think i've just finished all the chapter one missions. really liking it so far, slight tendency to hit the wrong button in combat or leave it on grenades when i want guns, but otherwise combat has been great. brevity (and levity) in cutscenes also pleases.

i've been spending most of my moneys on clothes :lol

Same here :D

Got this yesterday, played for 7 hours straight. It's actually not as confusing as it may look. The only problem is targeting during hero actions, but the auto-targeting is ok for the most part if you choose your path well.

Think this game might be above my comprehension level.

I thought the same thing for a good 3 hours, there`s still some things I don`t understand but it`s starting to click now, stick with it a bit more but yeah,it`s a very unconventional game that`s for sure.

Also the cut scenes and story so far has to be some of the weirdest shit i`ve seen in quite sometime lol...that guy you bring the suitcase to and all,I was like what the hell is this?? hehe...

Also, why is Vashryon and Leena levelling so much faster then Zephyr?? because he uses a machinegun or what? I couldn`t kill those 4 dobbermans until he levelled up.

This suggests to me that you've missed something. The character's level is the sum of their weapon levels. Switch weapons between characters to keep your levels high. Making your characters specialise in any weapon is not what the game wants you to do.

Good luck :)

The game is starting to come out early in Europe, I could have it today, but will wait till tommorow (work to do). Can't wait!

For the "guilty feeling" some people had about Vanille in FFXIII, man how do you describe
Leanne in wedding dress hitting on Zephyr in the Church
:lol

It started to come together towards the end of the play session last night and thus becoming more fun as well. I thought I might have made a big mistake early on (first fight to be exact and not knowing what to do therefore getting destroyed) but yeah sticking with it has paid off.

hmm.. so here's how to break the game as soon as chapter 7-9.. I assume this is the easiest way to clear the harder difficulties where enemies have 5x HP and damage.

1. Use the traveling merchant exploit for easy infinite money.
2. Farm green hexes to link terminals to the arena and use the XP bonus to grind Vashyron to machine gun level 96, which gives him 100% stun and 100% full scratch. Even getting him to lv 80 MG (50% stun/full scratch) would be good enough.
3. There you go.. you can now permastun and fully scratch any enemy with one attack. The enemy could have 1 trillion HP and destroy the universe with one hit and Vash + one direct damage bullet would kill it.

i have yet to start this (finishing a few other things first), but can any of you guys help? my friend is having a little trouble already, in chapter 1. she's stuck trying to make the red path to lucia. she dropped some red hexes to activate the elevator to get to the next level, and also spoke with theresa to get the red hexes from her. problem is, she needs one more red hex to complete the path to lucia.

does anyone know where to get these in chapter 1? she's been grinding around the red hex path to lucia for a while with no luck.

I had a similar problem, I used all the red hexes before I went to lucia on accident and couldn't open up the place. I kept getting into random encounters to try and get some from enemies, eventually I got a couple from some thugs. I'm not sure if its a coincidence or not, but every time an enemy dropped one, the battle was started when I was standing on a red hex.

I can't beat the first boss in Lucia :(

If I attack him I barely hurt him and eventually he does some lava jizz move that makes my guys go critical. If I avoid him he eventually does the move anyway!

Tri-Attack and throw some grenades at home.

And all the best bits are still to come. The battles have only just started to get good at that point. :)
Did you finish the game? Does the combat remain good/fresh throughout? (wait, I think I may have asked you this before - I forget where)

Impressions seem to be good. I'll probably pick this up once I'm done with XIII/SJ/IS (too many RPGs in such a short span! what a terrible horrible situation to be in!)

By the time you finish the game you'll probably be getting a little tired of the fight animations(at least I was). The battles themselves(at least boss battles) are still fresh because they require different techniques each time, but the regular "random" battles do get old IMO.

They shouldn`t make you use those hexes on spots that you already opened, unless i`m still misunderstanding that whole map/hex to move thing properly yet...can`t say i`m crazy about that aspect of the game so far.

Only about 2 hours into this game but already very impressed. The music and art direction is fantastic, adds a huge amount of charm. Just starting to come to terms with the combat (the tutorial is rubbish in my opinion, I had to google a few of the techniques to work them out.)

But overall a really interesting game and a breath of fresh air in terms of JRPGs.

A quick question: I was reading something somewhere about the English voice track not being complete. I've tried to track down a definitive description of the differences but I can't seem to find one on the web. I'm torn between Nolan North and an alleged more complete Japanese voice track, and need some help deciding which to use.

So far as of chapter 7, I cant see anywhere where the dub might have taken shortcuts.

Even all the NPCs have their voiced line(s)

I'm really happy with the job they did on it.
