My bad, I stumbled upon a thread on GameFAQs yesterday and the first reply only mentioned five levels of difficulty. Apparently there are ten levels.

I think the final difficulty level is Zenith. I don't think anyone is insane enough to replay the game more than 3 times though. It's a pretty long game as it is.

If I loved Star Ocean 3 (god help me), should I skip SO4 and go for this instead? Are they at all similar? Seeing all the different difficulty levels and emphasis on combat tells me that it is.

No. It is nothing like SO3.

Why is grinding so fun and accidental on this game?

I was going for green hexes (still on chapter 5) and went from 36 to 52 (rotating weapons)
connected 3-5 stations to the arena.

Just finished the dakota mines for 2x smg and now i need to recustom my guns!

so off I go for rare metal and funds to pimp out my 3 handguns and 2 smgs)

is there still a pic of the super decked out smg (sorry I not sure where I saw it previous)

Is there a walkthrough or something for this game somewhere? Havent been this lost since Demon Souls. The game doesnt do a very good job at explain the various functions of things. How do you get colored tiles? I need to get to level six and i am blocked but i cant seem to buy them anywhere? Just do random battles?

needs to show more effort.
Picked this up and got to about halfway through chapter 5 last night. Thus far I am not impressed.

The game barely even seems to have a story. It has been nothing but side missions thus far. MMO style suck side quests even! Asking me to grind out 20 mannequin parts? Seriously? That one isn't getting done for sure.

The battle system was interesting at first but has become slow and boring as I get further. I really liked the scratch/damage mechanic when first introduced to it but man did it get old fast. Now it feels like that's all there is really. Hero action, build up scratch, hero action, kill thing.

Any terrain can be completey ignored by jumping. And taking cover is crap because hero actions are so much better than standing and shooting. I find myself missing FF13's "20 hour tutorial" because at least that meant things were constantly evolving.

The "dungeons" if they can even be called that are crap. Nothing but a series of random encounters.

I started checking out the arena on chapter 5 but that was worthless because I couldn't try any of the harder encounters until I had beaten all the easy ones 3 times each. That is some bullshit right there. Why not just let me play the hard encounters from the start? I finished rank 2 before I couldn't handle any more grinding.

I love the gun the customization and world map though.

I didn't know anything about this game really other than it was from tri-ace and I was hoping for something as awesome as valkyrie profile 1/2 but it seems it is not to be.

Assuming they haven't changed the names from the Japanese version the last three are:
Legendary
Mythology
Zenith.

I can see why you would feel this way but I lik the game for the same reason you posted
(we are eye to eye about the world map and gun custom.)

Here are some ways to address some of your issues that I used

"The game barely even seems to have a story. It has been nothing but side missions thus far. MMO style suck side quests even! Asking me to grind out 20 mannequin parts? Seriously? That one isn't getting done for sure."

I think someone maention before but the story or it presentation is not given to you in anormal fasion (FFXIII) but more like episodes of three main characters daily lives (cowboy bebopish). The mannequinn side quest is actually easy with minimal grinding by connecting hexes such as 2x item drop and 2x rare drop to the place they are located at.

"The battle system was interesting at first but has become slow and boring"
"Any terrain can be completey ignored by jumping. And taking cover is crap because hero actions are so much better than standing and shooting."

I think this is personal taste as I do find hero actions the bread and butter, but the cover system, tri attack and cancels used in certain battles makes this more fun than just non stop hero actions (smackdowns for the win!!)

I know its opinion but both this game and FFXIII are fun and in some ways complement each other. ( I love the graphics and presentation of FFXIII but the RoF battle system trumps it imo)

Just picked this up today. Looking forward to getting engrossed in it as FF XIII didn't really do it for me.

I must say though, I'm a little daunted by the possible depth of the combat. I think I might get my ass handed to me a fair bit.

Any starter's tips from those in the know??

the tutorial in the arena is great for basics (a lil confusing on tri attacks)
rotate weapons to all characters since that is how level is determined
use station and energy hexes to add bonuses to dungeon (not necessary but fun)
keep up with gun customization to make the most difficult fights manageable
acceleration mods (scopes and barrels) are king
let your inner fasionista guide you in making the protangist characters your own:D
have fun and make strats that work for you

I see what you mean about covers, they are useless at first, but when you start customizing weapons and increase your speed stat, covers become useful because you can shoot from afar.

why do you simplify things? I can say rpgs are merely attack/magic and make it sound atrocious. there's a lot more than just scratch/hero action in rof. I can't wait till you tackle dolled up dwelist and tell me that's all there's to the battle system. there are a bunch of factors you are not taking into account.

i like the pace of the story, the episodic structure means I can pace myself and not be worried about the game forcing me to advance the plot. once I do the story mission, I can explore Basel more, customize weapons, do some arena ranks and once you get chapter 5 more side missions start appearing.

and btw, if you active the terminals around that area, the mannequin quest takes 10 minutes at most.

Speaking of the dolled-up dwellest, I mopped up all the other stuff in chapter 4 but I still have to beat him. Everyone is at level 18 and I can usually get him halfway down, but after that I have a hard time replenishing my hero gauge. Any advice? It's the encounter where you fight the lvl 48 dolled up dwellest and two lvl 12 dwellest.

here's what I did, first thing first take up his two grunts. after you do that, take out his bazooka thing, this will force him to come directly to a character. Make sure the character you are going to use a decoy does not inflict scratch damage.

after you make sure of that, use the decoy character move him close to the center of the battlefield. by using a decoy the dolled dwellest will leave his back exposed, I suggest using a molotov cocktail on him, too. The molotov will slowly cause scratch damage.

after all this all you need to do is balance the usage of hero actions. I beat him at level 9.

Definitely agree it has a cowboy bebop vibe. Would be nice to have the same kind of music (that anime had a great soundtrack). Find it a bit hard for now but we ll see.

Cleared up almost all the quests on chapter 9, one more to go. Cleaned out Dakota Veins and got the SMG, the configuration isn't exactly what I expected, so I can't use the exact same shit I had on my previous SMG... damn! :lol

I also went down to levle 11 and level 12 to place hexes, got a TON of bezel shards from level 12, and a ton of clothing and stuff.

I could've beat chapter 9 hours ago but this game does nothing but piss on me when it comes to quests that involve a drop. It's the second time I've wasted HOURS playing grinding mobs of the same kind over and over and over to the point I seriously want to snap the damn disc in half.

I need a Luxury Meat. It drops off Wreckingballers in Lucia. So I've been sitting here killing thousands of them in different ways and not 1 fuggin meat will drop. I could probably be on chapter 11 or 12 by now but this game has THE worst drop rates on crap you actually need. Makes that camping in Final Fantasy XI seem like a breeze since that was a MMO.

Lol, I know how you feel! Maybe you should find a way to bring the 2x drop rate and 2x rare drop rate terminal effects from level 5 all the way to level 6... is that even possible? I know I ran into trouble after coming out of the elevator on level 4 because the red hexes I was using can't connect through the straight passage to the rest of level 4... :(

Days like these...

Have a Blessed Day
I got this game a few days ago and I must be retarded because I'm stuck. I've been grinding for hours. I cant get to the cafe nor can I get into the elevator/lift. I've been placing the hexes but the path still wont open. Help?

Wait, how do those terminal things work? Just use colored hex pieces and link it all the way to a dungeon?

Chapter 5 now, thanks to Error for his advice on Dwellest.

I could, but then I'd need hours of farming green energy hexes. All of level 4 and 5 I've been doing are green and I just want to choke this game like a pervert does his dong during him watching porno.

I'm sick of the 10+ minute long battles too. I'm level 59 with everyone and fights are just becoming freaking chores. Nothing is hard it's just pools of HP to work through. I get where reviewers were coming from now that I'm 60 hours in and it's just becoming god damn tedious.

Edit: Realized I'm dumb and I DID have those effects from Level 4 going into Lucia anyway for extra drop rate...which is even more absurd at how awful the drop rate is.

If you're really desperate to connect hexes you can buy energy stations and place a couple of them to bridge an otherwise impossible gap.

Yeah but to buy those you need to cough up 5 of a color just to make one. It's not worth it. The only trophy pertaining to the hexes is to get 4 terminals connected in the same color and get their 4 effects up and running. Honestly most effects are crap anyway, and on normal you don't need to them to survive. Just "meh" perks you really won't see a huge difference for half the time. If you DO connect them to dungeons in the chapter you are in you'll have spent so much time grinding the colors anyway that you'll be over buffed most likely for that dungeon so again it makes the effect pointless.

As for that stupid Luxury meat it FINALLY dropped. Now to finish this last quest, complete chapter, and turn this game off....I'm burnt out and pissy from it now. :lol

Can you only use energy stations of the same color to spread on-going terminal effects? Is it possible to "change" the color the energy mid-stream while retaining all the effects without replacing the previously placed colors?

Nope you'd have to redo it all a different color.

It has to be the same color, I'm afraid. That's why the green hexes are so good for levels 4-6, because they fit everywhere.

Going to repost this link with some good guides/info for any newcomers to the thread:

Yep. If someone ran around here claiming 'this review/game sucks!' without articulating why, the mods would ban them. The gamefaqs mods deleted my posts just for accurately accusing the trolls of trolling, lying, flaming, making personal insults, etc. But that doesn't have anything to do with this game so that's all I'll say about it.

lol nice gun there Gyoru. I didn't have the materials for that grip+square extension at the bottom, but you put it to good use there.

I beat the game last night. I really enjoyed it.

I have a quick question or two though.

In neverland I had a few monster drops (like black blood) that have descriptions which say they can be used in item synthesis, but none of the things the tinkerer can make uses them. Any ideas?

Can gun pieces be rotated? Otherwise this pic just doesn't seem possible.

Gamefaqs is a good place to discuss a game during the JP release on certain niche boards, but once the English release hits it becomes totally moronic. Can't hold any conversation thre whatsoever.

Also, as far as I know there's nothing censored in RoF.

You can rotate the gun pieces with L1/L2 or LT/RT, and you can use the right analog stick to move the gun while you have a part selected.

Well that explains the gun parts that didn't seem to fit anywhere. Would have been nice if the game manual or a npc mentioned that that was a possibility during customization.

Or you can look at the top right of the screen during customization. They list all the controls there on the screen. Just saying... :)

Lol, well I managed to miss that during the 80 hours I put into the game.

Honestly I just thought it was the same help and info thing that is there when you initially open up the customization menu, so having it stated somewhere else to draw my attention to it would have been nice.
