I don't think I really have a "holy grail" item; I like games in general too much to have one thing I REALLY want.

The closest thing I can think of to one would be a replacement for my missing launch (and thus special edition) Terran-box copy of Starcraft. I have like every single other PC game box I ever got, except that one. I have no idea why it vanished but it clearly did, and I'd love to have it again. I still have the manual and jewelcase (with disc) for the original version, and a later standard Protoss box from a few years later (because the launch disc stopped working a few years later, must have gotten scratched), but not the box for the original launch release, preferably with the Terran box I got when the game came out (at launch they had three box covers, for Terran, Protoss, and Zerg.). :(

Once you open up your collecting to other regions it can get ugly real fast....

And by ugly I mean expensive. And by expensive I mean I need to stop importing games.
Yeah, this is true. "But if I get more games at once I save on shipping on a per-game basis" gets expensive way too quickly...

I've been there, I thought exactly that when picking up a bunch of stuff via Shopping Mall Japan and cried a little at the final cost! I'm far more careful these days in terms of what I purchase.

Unfortunately, just like Taito Legends 1 and 2, the four Taito Memories collections also do NOT support tate mode for any of the vertical shooters on the discs. Annoying. There are some games in the Japanese collections that aren't in the US ones, though. I don't have the Japanese collections, but sometime might get the ones that don't overlap so much with the US collections.
I read in a digitpress thread that some did have tate mode

Not sure this is the right thread for this but whatever it's all the same people in the retro threads anyway.

So I received a PAL Mega Drive in the post today. Supposedly it's a Hong Kong model or something that plays all region carts?

The problem is I can't get a picture off it.

I tried hooking it up with power supply that came with it into my framemeister with the supplied AV-SCART cable - no picture, white noise. Tried it with my Super Famicom PSU, no picture but I could at least hear sound so the game is running, just no picture. At first the sound would cut out every 10 seconds or so but it seems to have stopped doing that.

I've tried fucking with all the normal FM settings, no change. Just a plain black screen.

Any ideas? Bad cable? Bad console? Should I just send it back?

Haha, I'm sure it does. Mainly I just want a few Sega Ages discs for PS2 and a couple of PS1 games like Gradius Gaiden. But I am thinking about a Famicom and and FDS and if that happens ... yeah. It's gonna get ugly.

A new addition to my Game and Watch collection arrived today - Greenhouse:

Sorry for the dark pictures... Really pleased with this, been looking for a decent mint/near mint condition boxed Greenhouse for a while now and happened to stumble across this one. 35/60 Handhelds acquired now, its getting harder and harder to find the ones I need without spending a fortune on each!

That's gorgeous! Greenhouse is a good one, too.

I only have Mario Bros. and Mario's Cement Factory from when I was a kid, but I think I'd be happy with just one more: Oil Panic :)

I would LOVE to have a nice full FDS collection. I only have one that I picked up by accident - its sealed but to be honest not even sure the title. Indiana Jones perhaps? Here's a photo of it.

It's literally Arumana no Kiseki, which translates to 'The Miracle of Almana', it's a Castlevania style action game with a (yes) Indiana Jones theme. But instead of using a whip, the main character uses an awkward grappling system.

That's a good one to have. Arumana no Kiseki by Konami aka not Indiana Jones. It even opens with not the Sankara stone being stolen.

Thanks :) I had the Mario Bros Dual Screen game since I was a kid so its sorta a favourite of mine (well, all the Mario G&W games are quality). Oil Panic is a great pickup if you can find it - here's mine:

I've gone down a rabbit hole looking for FDS info and just found out about the GameCube menu music being the FDS intro chime slowed down by 19x. You've gotta love Nintendo for stuff like that, especially as companies like Konami are today basically disavowing their past and taking a hot shit on their back catalog.

I've watched some vids of that one and it looks pretty neat.

Thanks for the info! I would love to collect all the exclusive disc system games. They are really unique and display quite nice actually. Funny how when sealed they have a way of showing all the contents.

^ I'm blown away by the fact that, even now, I will discover a Famicom game I didn't know about from Konami.

Neat. Never seen that game before, but it's clearly a pumped-up, Indiana Jones/Temple of Doom-take on Roc 'n Rope from Konami's earlier arcade years.

We recently talked about the Konami FDS releases in the NES/Fami thread.

Over the past few months I've gotten and played Ai Senshi Nicol, Alumarna no Kiseki, Akumajo Dracula, Meikyuu Jiin Dababa, and Bio Miracle Bokutte no Upa.

Upa is my favorite of the games I've played that we didn't get in the US. Howard Phillips played it and was like, "Nope!"

It really is awesome. There's something about putting in those floppies and having load times. I guess it feels like a CD addon to the Fami and that's just cool.

The main issue with the FDS is that the belt drive will wear out. I mean, it has been like 30 years. Luckily, they are readily available these days and you can find people to do the repair easily online.

The second issue is that disks will lose their magnetic data. I haven't had that happen to me yet. I've opened sealed stuff and had it work right away and I've bought used disks from Japan and also have had them work right away. You have to be careful when it comes to their care and storage, and keep them away from large sources of magnetism (which include CRTs!)

Yeah, I watched a 3-part video series of a guy replacing a belt the other night. Looks like quite a few steps but not all that difficult. I've never done any tinkering with consoles but I feel like I could do it with some time and patience. If I bought one, I'd get one with a newly replaced belt and configured drive anyway. I'd be more worried about the disks just crapping out. I've heard they can go bad even without being exposed to dust and magnetism, like disc rot with CDs.

The good side with floppies is that they can be rewritten to be made like brand new. The problem is to be able to write on such non-standard medium. There are solutions to write on Famicom discs, but they need old copiers and a PC with a parallel port. Hopefully someone will devise a modern solution to be able to refurbish all these old discs. I don't think it's really difficult, but you need someone with the technical knowledge and the will to do it.

They are here! 3DO Super X, and Sharp X68000 Champion Edition. My PC Engine copy of Champion Edition came too, but I left it at work because I do things like that when I rush out the door -_-. The X6800 Champion Edition is MINT. Not a scratch or ding anywhere. No fade, or tearing. I am amazed at it, honestly. Has all it's inserts, manual and the adapter for the Capcom peripherals. The 3DO port is sealed.

I kinda love the look of these clear CRTs. Apparently they were designed for prisons so inmates couldn't hide contraband in them.

These are indeed quite pretty. There's a few up on eBay although not for a price I'd be comfortable paying for one of them. Hunting down the right and available CRT is becoming tiresome. :(

I need some help RetroGAF. I want to buy some arcade boards, and eventually have one or two cabinets with several shelves inside for multiple boards. In particular, Street Fighter II boards (Champ, Hyper, and vanilla). They don't all need to be hooked up at once. I can build a cabinet just fine (or even grab an already built original), but outside of that I don't want to spend alot on the games. So I would need to buy a CPS1 motherboard, along with the PCBs, correct?

I've only got two CPS1 games (Megaman the Power Battle and The Punisher) so I'm not 100% familiar with the CPS1 hardware but from what I understand it has the following:

A mainboard "A Board" and a smaller B board which has the ROM chips for each game rom. So you'd in theory need a mainboard + B boards for each of the SF2 games. Again, not sure if I've got that the right way round so hopefully someone more knowledgeable can comment on that. I'd also read up on the B boards "committing suicide". This is a pain in the ass problem for CPS2&3 games especially but some CPS1 games have the same problem (Captain Commando and Cadillacs and Dinosaurs if I remember correct). There are ways to fix this but it can be a bit tricky, I had a professional "phoenix" my CPS2 boards (bar Armoured Warriors, I really should fix that) so that this won't be a problem going forward.

For CPS2 games you need both an A board (motherboard) and a B board (game board). I really love the CPS2 tech, I've got a few PCB's of my favourite games (Marvel Super Heroes, Megaman Power Fighters, Alien Vs Predator, Armoured Warriors, SSF2T... If I could get Battle Circuit I'd be content with my collection!).

Random as heck but does anyone know where or how I could get hold of some blank/empty X68000 cases/boxes? Lets say, for production or repurposing? Or how would I get in contact with a company that can replicate those for production?
