Well, it's coming out in November. Clearly they could be working on something else and just push this "easy to sell" game to get Wii U units in homes.
They spent THREE YEARS making an engine, designing and developing the entire gameplay design, a lot of time and money and creativity went into DKCR. It reviewed really well and it's the second-highest selling game in the entire franchise. You think they're just gonna ditch all that and start over with a whole new engine without building on the base they created?
Nah, b, we doing underwater silhouette levels

Oh please. He makes what he's told to make.
Supreme waste of talent.
I actually think it's good that they get some HD development experience under their belts before they attempt a HD Metroid.
OK, seriously Nintendo, fire Iwata already!
So is he lying?
I know. It takes no talent to make a game like DKC.
Maybe one of the reason people chose to work at a Nintendo owned studio studio rather than any of the other studios in the US is that they want to work on cartoony platformers rather than gritty shooters. Plenty of people get excited by working on big well known franchises. Retro doesn't have any track record for makin their own IPs, so I don't really see why people are so set about them making one compared to other Nintendo studios.
Also, a lot of people seem to basically want them to make Uncharted. Why would we need more games like that when every other studio is doing that?

Unpopular opinion, but good choice on their part. Would I have loved to see Retro make a new IP or continue Metroid? Hell yes, but given they had to choose between Metroid and Donkey Kong, they probably felt tired of Metroid after having worked on that IP for over 5 years.
DKCR was also quite possibly the best 2D platformer of the last generation which is surprising given the stiff competition, so if they feel they have enough new ideas and juice in them to make a sequel I say we give them a chance.
And it looks like a Wii game running in HD not a truly next-gen DKCR and that's the problem
Just like NSMBU and Nintendo Land lol. This reasoning is gonna get trotted out so much between now and release.Agreed. DKCR was an amazing game and seeing that expanded upon will be a great experience for sure. I'm sure they can always come back to Metroid but DKC will benefit them now by expanding that user-base and getting used to the Wii U hardware and gamepad implementation before getting into other stuff like Metroid and taking advantage of the bigger userbase and technical expertise on the hardware after they wrap up with developing this.
Why are people calling DKCR one of the best games of a generation? They had a game that essentially required a dpad and two buttons and they replaced one of the buttons with fucking waggle. It's like if you had to shake the controller constantly instead of pressing down a button to run in a 2D mario game.
Sign up David Wise, retro.
If he isn't, then he's yet another example of poor management at Nintendo.

Fire the guy who said "this game sold five million copies, maybe we should make a sequel"?
It will probably be a fun game but a lot of people are just burned out when it comes to look-a-like sequels lately(i.e. All the Super Mario 3D World frustration). Most people seem to prefer a nice mix of new IPs and fresh ideas at the start of a new gen. This also feels like a missed opportunity for Nintendo to reel in some of the demographic that prefer the style of content that is on the xbox and ps4. Retro is one of the few under Nintendo's roof that know how to create games that would appeal to that demo.
How are people ok with Retro working on goddamn Donkey Kong?? I am severely disappointed. Almost crushingly so. This is like using a katana to peel a fucking potato.
Already did.

That's all they can do - rehash and reuse. They must really be struggling to meet Iwatas promise of profitability.

like, i understand
this famous chef that made three of the best steaks ever suddenly decided three years ago to make a hamburger and you were all "that's beneath that chef"
but then it turned out to be one of the best hamburgers ever made. like, god damn what a burger.
then you start salivating over their next dish. it's got to be a steak of some kind. you start dreaming about what kind of cut it'll be. the sauces.
and then they present to you another burger
it's okay to feel a little disappointed! just know that it's not demeaning to the chef, because it'll be just as great of a meal as any steak
David Wise is back to compose!
where is there a video of this game?
it's not on their E3 2013 playlist: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2JiZAV5BmDU_nJylD2zvyHvgFm9Ot8Nr
and on the Nintendo.com E3 page, I'm getting a video of the 3DS re-release of DCKR when I try to play the Tropical Freeze video:

This will probably sell more than any original IP they could muster up. Not a guarantee, but a safe bet. This is the financially sound choice whether it's popular or not.
I am AMAZED at the amount of people disappointed in the game. It SERIOUSLY amazes me how many people think it's so easy to just throw a game like DKC: Tropical Freeze together and claim it's an utter waste of talent and skill. There is no other high caliber studio putting this much effort and time into a high-production value 2D side-scroller ESPECIALLY with Western influence save for Ancel's team and the Mario group. These kinds of games just don't get the time of day anymore, and when they do, they're LASHED out against for not being some kind of Uncharted-want-to-be or Halo-killer.
More than anything, it just makes me realize that, among "hardcore gamers", this genre of game is just not wanted anymore, especially when a place like NeoGAF calls it a waste of time and talent. Of all places, GAF should be the one that recognizes how difficult it is to make a game like this.
Unbelievable. I don't want to live on this planet anymore.
Playing it safe is exactly why Wii U is selling like it is now. If you don't take risks with new IP old IP won't carry you forever. Old IP created the gamecube and the only way Nintendo got out of that hole was by going completely crazy with Wii _____ stuff. Nintendo seems to have completely forgotten that. They didn't even show one new casual IP so apparently they are only going after big Nintendo fans at this point.
Would it really make sense for Nintendo to actively go after that demographic? If they would order Retro to make a Halo-killer or an Uncharted wannabe it's doubtful that they would actually win over many Halo or Uncharted players. It seems better to focus on their strengths make the types of games they're good at and then make sure to get all the big third party cross platform games (which their admittedly failing at).
I'm not saying they should only make platformers and Kart racing and not make any new IPs. But mandating games solely to match the competition, in genres where they have little experience and little desire to work on just doesn't seem like a good idea. Yes Retro made a brilliant first person adventure 10 years ago, but there's still very little to suggest that they would be able to, or want to, make a significant dent in the over saturated shooter market, that would make fps fans pick a WiiU over an xbox or a ps4 that both have a bunch of exclusives games in that genre each

The Wii U is selling like it is right now because Nintendo hasn't released a first party game since launch and has no third party support.
