Returning member after a long absence, how would you rate the overall health of this forum?

GAF is an infinitely better place now. Adults can get back to conversing like adults. There is much more respectful posting. The mods are doing an amazing job. Letting discussions unfold organically and only stepping in if someone is unnecessarily offensive. They also provide polite warnings before many bans are enacted, which is so refreshing compared to OldGAF. This is how mature adults should discuss things and behave.

The majority of the negativity and dismissive attitudes I still see are funnily enough from a handful of posters (always the same ones) who continue to attack-post/drive by post in the same left-wing extremist style that so many of us are happy has removed itself from this place. It's like they are clinging on by their fingernails to the vestiges of what they think GAF should be, which is of the "with me or against me" variety. They have plenty of other options for that echo chamber, but no, they want everyone to fall in line.

Good riddance to that attitude, I say. I doubt it's coming back here anytime soon despite their persistent and unsubtle efforts.

I agree that gaming side is a little slow, but that is to be expected. Though, there has definitely been an obvious, slow and steady increase in activity since the change and I feel the forum is healthy.

I think the forum could benefit from an improved search function, at least as it presents itself on mobile. I know a few times I have wanted to make a new thread, used the search function using every key word I can think of, seen no similar threads, written up my thread and then realised another thread did exist. I've even searched for threads I know exist with the exact title and they don't show up in search results. This discourages me from making new threads. Doesn't sound like it's easily fixable though.

All in all, GAF is great now in my opinion. Of course, the proof is in the pudding. If you are wondering, hang out for a week yourself and see what you think.

One set of political tribalism was traded for another set of political tribalism. For a while it was kind of refreshing to get away from constant racism/discrimination threads, but many of the discussion threads are more about supporting tribalism rather than stoking a thoughtful conversation.

Political discussion is incredible, but hyper-partisanship deters from our ability to have a great country.

Hello, everyone. I left gaf about the time of the great schism. Back then, the forum was pretty cancerous, and the moderation staff extremely incompetent. If anyone else from that time is still around, how is the forum now as opposed to before? Sorry for the low-effort post.
I can actually speak my mind and be civil and not get instantly banned by extreme idealogues. It's wonderful.

Really just needs more traffic and that's it. This is the best place to hang out right now.

I largely lurk here, even though I've been registered for the last eight years or so. In the last few years prior to the ResetERA split, I barely posted because I didn't want to lose my account. I have an RE account, but I barely post on it for the same reason.

And, it's not because I want to spew alt-right talking points, or I'm obsessed with telling people about group X that I despise. Politically, I'd define myself as 'centre-left with a desire to do the best by other people'. That doesn't seem to be enough for a place like ResetERA, or for pre-October 2017 NeoGAF, and so I largely refrained from posting or commenting. It reminds me a lot of Something Awful, a forum that I really loved, until the insane bannings got out of control, and people would lose their account for insane reasons. In the case of Something Awful, I suspect that the motivation was to force people to buy new accounts for ten dollars each, but the result was the same.

NeoGAF is obviously a far quieter forum now. I don't think that's a controversial statement. That said, I think that it is a much better forum. ResetERA gets the eyes and the clicks, but it is a hysterial, deeply bizarre place moderated by loony left wing autocrats. I don't like them, I don't like their politics, I don't like the way they treat people, and I think that their behaviour is actually deeply toxic, and reinforces the very attitudes that won 2016 for Trump. Anyone claiming that GAF is now a hive of alt-righters is absolutely deluding themselves. What it has become is simply an environment where a punitive system which responds to political wrongthink does not exist, and for many users, that seems to be something that they're just not used to. Seeing political opinions that they disagree with being punished through bans and moderation is what they want, and what they expect. When that doesn't happen, they immediately start screaming about the rise of Nazism in their forums.

Maybe my feeling is that GAF is in a transitional period. It is quieter, still recovering from the ResetERA split, but the broader direction that it is going in is a really unique and positive one, and I've been enjoying it a lot more.

I think GAF is in now in a great place. It has people with different backgrounds and ideas, I don't feel like anyone is being silenced or mistreated. You are allowed to disagree and have civil discussions on different subjects.

I had basically stopped posting back in the "old days" because of the shit show rogue moderators who would ban you for daring to mention anything they disagreed with.

I know we will keep improving and growing as a community, because that is what happens when you create such a space. I don't know how long people can last elsewhere without getting banned for "unacceptable rhetoric", "spreading misinformation", etc.

Believe me, not long.
Lol. I think I got tossed for daring to say Jordan Peterson doesn't sound like a white supremacist to me; or maybe it was for saying the Women's March Organization wasn't entirely self-less for pushing for that change our lives rally, can't remember.

been a long old time since i was here - i am just getting back into it. So i will update later.

The health of this forum is improving. Some of the topics have been very active, with varied viewpoints. There's been a surge of some viewpoints I wouldn't have expected - but I can't be surprised because for quite a time, those views were verboten. That said, expression and exposure is good for all parties involved and I haven't seen any of that ban-baiting dogpiling that was synonymous with the old regime.

We're finding equilibrium after the split and building on a solid foundation based on letting the ideas sort themselves out instead of moderation turning the forum into a game of competitive agreement.

I should look into the community threads more - be nice to find more people to talk baseball with and wreck me in Street Fighter.

I suck at Street Fighter but would love to get back into the series. Which OT would you be referring to? The general fighting game OT, or the SF OT?

It will get livelier .. this place has too much history to go away
Right now it's quality over quantity
Much better than any bootleg knockoff sites

I have to agree, the current state of GAF is way better then the old GAF. I am happy that all the nutcases have created their own hug chamber.

I hope politics can be left at the door for the majority of discussions. I have noticed it creep in to a few threads like the James Gunn thread, I just hope Evilore doesn't let it grow like a cancer this time. Politics in nearly every thread drove me crazy with old GAF.

Either I suppose. Neither one seems particularly active right now. It's been months since I've played at all, so I'll be handing out some free wins. I haven't even messed around with any of the newest season's characters yet.

The activity has dropped bit it's definitely a matter of quality over quantity. Actual discussion can take place without terminally triggered low life's with over 20 posts per day to incessantly quote with with "Wow just wow... I can't even" posts just to getthe mod's attention.

Moderation is more hands off which is a huge step up from the agenda driven thought police that were here before.

Gaming side is pretty slow due to a lack of people jumping to post news threads and system wars folks to really fuel it. A bit of a shame since that draws in posters that participate about other topics but that's to be expected.

Definitely a form of hypocrites, but when is politics ever not.

The buffy topic is a complete display of utterly embarrassing stupidity. However, it's the same vocal group. I think that eventually like-minded people will come around to better police themselves. One cannot simply wallow forever, they'll get bored.

Please don't ask our women members to "out" themselves. We have plenty of women here. They mostly choose to withhold that information because internet, and because it can interfere with having a productive discussion.

You're assuming women aren't here because they're not going around posting photos of themselves or starting posts with "AS A FEMALE, I...." except that's not the environment we're going for.

Man, you're talking like I wasn't here before October, or this is my first message board experience, lol.

People who say "as a _____" in an attempt to add weight to what they're about to say are suspect. That's an internet rule. You discern who is who based upon context clues. The passion and knowledge mean more than a virtual box-check.

Speaking of internet, when you say "because internet" as a reason to justify why women would not be more proactive speaking about things that concern them, its strikes me as recognizing that we are participating in an environment that is not tolerant of their politics. A recent example is the Abortion in Ireland thread that is overflowing with MRAs. Two (arguably three...user was deleted from existence) women went among the wolves, but they can't/won't fight the mob alone. One of them hasn't posted since that thread died. Another pokes in on occasion to serve as a contrarian vorice.

I imagine there are other topics that they would be interested in, such as equal pay, women candidates running for office regionally and nationally, and #MeToo is still going strong. R. Kelly dropped a 19-minute song confessing to all of his sexual crimes, and so on.

Bonus: one user said that men turn gay because they get tired of women's antics. What in the misogyny?!?

(RIP Zumphry)

I just looked up how long I've been a member, and it's been since high school. I feel old now.

At this point, ResetEra is essentially my "left GAF" and the current site is my "right GAF." It makes for a good mixture of opinions.
I do wish more people posted so topics moved a bit more quickly, but this is to be expected after a mass-exodus.

It's not a massive issue yet, but I am a bit concerned about this site's adoption of extreme right-wing politics. Era is definitely, like, oppressively-left, but GAF is quickly becoming a haven for the extreme-right, which is equally bad. The amount of Trump-love and overt racism here is just saddening.

I have hopes for the site, but it's showing symptoms of doing a complete 180 from what it used to be. If it turns into 'The Donald' I won't bother coming back. It's only a handful of posters, currently, who taint up political threads, but I could see that number growing over time. Luckily there are posters still willing to call-out bullshit, but the number is dwindling.

Posts per day are ~double what they were a month ago. And last month was E3 month. We're already above the posts/day during this year's E3 week outside of the three conference days already, and at this rate it shouldn't be long before that's surpassed too, just with normal daily post activity.

All this is before the 1300 initial Ban Justice bans we're currently reviewing get formally adjudicated and folks notified, which will begin this week. 2.1 redesign to polish things up, improve mobile significantly, and add a bunch of features should launch in 2-3 weeks.

Our custom Twitch integration just launched. We're building out a lot more custom stuff as well.

etc. etc.

I see people on both sides who "taint up political threads". This is not an issue with the 'right', but merely some people have issues having an opinion from that side at all (and vice versa). I have no clue why you would believe it is turning into "right GAF" when most people here are left-leaning/liberal. The only difference is that it isn't far-left like it used to be.

I may have missed it, but is there a thread that is dedicated to all the updates for the site itself or what 2.1 redesign will entail?

I can barely do a hadouken without messing up and performing a shoryuken. You should have no issues trouncing me.

The new forum software is nice, but all the notable users are on Reset. Reset is fine but it has its own issues. There are no perfect communities, online or live.

I need more activity personally. I enjoy arguing lol.

Even Reset is not particularly the same place GAF was before the schism. Some people went to other forums and others used it as a sign to move on from forums.

It just shows how fragile communities are. I still post here, just not as frequently.

I didn't really post much prior due to Uni kicking my ass but the forum is cool, other than a few who go into threads crying about reverse racism, longing for an ethnostate and their thinly veiled racism. Many of the other posters seem pretty laid back if not a little passionate. Though I think the forum would be much better off if we curbed the number of "SJW!!" and "THE LEFT111!!" or "ERAAA!!" threads that are absolutely shallow in discussion, on a whole it makes the forum seem like it's full of nutters, conspiracy theorists, and the like when in reality it's not.

One set of political tribalism was traded for another set of political tribalism. For a while it was kind of refreshing to get away from constant racism/discrimination threads, but many of the discussion threads are more about supporting tribalism rather than stoking a thoughtful conversation.

This is hardly the case. Nobody is calling for the blood of leftists or seeking to shut down their perceived political opponents anymore. Supporting trump, home schooling or tight border controls is not right-wing extremism. I forgive many regular, especially younger people's perception in regards to this, considering the media has made it their mission to turn anything right of Stalin into Hitler.

This forum has gone back to being fair and balanced. Stepped away from left-wing extremism and come closer toward moderate norms of behaviour. I tried posting on resetera but it's completely extreme and partisan. It is too stifling to engage the majority of people. It is old gaf except they can't afford to permaban everyone yet, as they seek to grow. Still issuing the week/days long bans for the crime of not being a Leninist on very issue and topic.

Can't say I know your post-history, but the first two pages of your history seem fine. I think you're safe.

I have no clue why you would believe it is turning into "right GAF" when most people here are left-leaning/liberal. The only difference is that it isn't far-left like it used to be.

*Most* people probably are still left-leaning, given the demographics of the site. Younger people tend to be democratic, and video games tend to attract a younger audience, so you're right on that.

I've just noticed more Trump-support in the recent weeks. I honestly can't pinpoint a particular thread or poster, so I know this is basically nothing more than a hot-take, but it's a general feeling after reading many off-topic threads.
Like I said, it's not really an issue at the moment. I'm just concerned about how it could grow into something worse. At the moment, this thread and this post (with over 15 likes!) exist in Off-Topic. Mind you, the OP of the thread has already been banned, but the topics are still thriving. On its own, they're nothing to really be concerned about, but they reflect an overall shift in the politics of this site.

Again, I realize it's just two small examples, and I'm not really providing any strong evidence. It's just a general feeling about the site as a whole. Era is currently, in my opinion, *too* left-leaning, but that doesn't mean this site needs to counteract by being too far right-leaning. I still have high hopes for this forum, as it's been a pretty major part of my internet-life for over ten years, but I am a bit concerned about the direction in which it's heading.

So you don't like Trump and people supporting him.

Now, what about the "amount" of "overt racism" you claim is at NeoGAF currently?

but I am a bit concerned about the direction in which it's heading.
You can never have a perfect balance of content, some days it might be left, right, other days it might be split in the middle. What you can hope for is a balanced mod team who enforce the stated rules of the site, no matter what. This means that even if most users end up being on what you perceive to be the right, YOU will never be persecuted for your leftist position.

As a 'right-winger' I will leave this site the second left leaning liberals start being banned for wrong-think or start being bullied by right-wingers with the mods backing. We were there just a few months ago. It ain't even cool.

It is time to try and forget about who is on who's side, and treat each topic with arguments and reason.

I don't know how to say "I can't pinpoint a thread a particular thread or poster" more clearly. Which part is confusing you?

Perhaps 'racism' isn't the proper word, but 'discrimination' certainly is. After just a quick minute of searching, for example, I found this.

And yes, if you honestly think Trump isn't a bad person, I don't know what to tell you. This has nothing to do with political parties. I'm not even registered to vote.
But seriously, if you really don't see any issues with Trump, or any president in pretty much all of history, I don't know how to have a discussion with you.

And this I completely agree with.
I don't identify with a political party. I don't really care if people are 'left' or 'right;' I've just noticed an overall feeling that the site is becoming more extreme-right since the exodus. This is based on being a member for over ten years, and seeing how posts have changed since I first started.

But again, I can't really pinpoint anything in particular. I've given a few examples after 5ish minutes of searching, though. The fact that it was so easy to find hate-filled posts is a bit alarming.

And again, I don't think it's really that big of a deal at the moment. But this is also how sites like 4chan moved from exceptionally-liberal to exceptionally-conservative, and places like The_Donald got started. It's the same thing happening the US government at this very moment. Small acts go unpunished, then slightly bigger acts, then bigger, then bigger, and so on.

I hope I'm wrong. I really enjoy this site.

what if i like trump even though i know hes an asshole

i like a little abuse

Trump presents himself as a textbook asshole/dick/alpha bully in public. Just like on that reality show he ran. And many people like that in a leadership figure. After years of dry, by the numbers politicians; swathes of people yearned for a shitposter in chief.
It's why he got the votes he needed. Do what works for you I say.

That post you link could be argued for or against. There are many arguments, right or wrong on both sides. "Overt racism" it is not until you ask the original poster their reasons for saying it. One post you clearly had to scrape to find does not equal "the amount of overt racism" you claim.

As for Trump. I never stated whether I was for or against Trump. You are trying to paint a picture of me to push your beliefs. You are seeing bogeymen everywhere.

YOU came into this thread and made sweeping generalisations and when called out on it, your answer is: "Well...ah...I can just feel the vibe."

Righto.

All you have proven is that you are a Trump hater who doesn't like other people being able to voice their support for Trump. Not very liberal.

So anyone talking of reverse racism is really just a closet racist?

Vast majority of the times yes. Whenever I see someone seriously say "reverse racism", I simply read it as "the people we were racist against (which was the status quo and I was okay with...), are now being racist against us and that's not cool!"

Racism is racism, saying "reverse racism" just makes the person sound like a twat.

Look at the timing of my posts; they're within a few minutes of each other. If you really want some massive catalog of discriminatory behavior, I'm not going to deliver it because I'm not up for it. They're not that hard to find, though. I found these examples within just a few minutes of each other, all of which are currently on the front page of Off-Topic. I didn't have to 'scrape' for anything. I said in my first post that it's only a handful of people posting these things. My concern was simply that it might become worse, as is the case with many websites populated by young and impressionable young people (especially males, which this site is predominantly occupied by).

I don't know why you're being so defensive about it, especially since it -presumably- doesn't refer to you.

Your hangup on Trump is telling, though.
I mean, come on. You can't honestly say Trump is a good person or good president can you? Do you honestly think he's unworthy of criticism?
I don't hate Trump at all. He's a fantastic business-man who has done exceptionally well over his lifetime. He's the one president of my lifetime who dared to speak out against political parties, yet still achieved presidency, which is a genius move that nobody else has matched. That doesn't make him a good person or president, though.

Look, the OP asked how people feel about the site, and I gave my answer. I'm not clear on why this is such an issue for you.
The site is unequivocally different from before the exodus, and I see it is currently leaning more right than it did before. I saw the same thing happen to 4chan, which was already the asshole of the internet; though it's now the prolapse of the internet, and I'm just (mildly) concerned it might happen here too.

I just don't want my favorite site to fall apart, that's all.

so you dont care about the context of what someone is saying and you automatically think someone is a twat or will discount everything they say right or wrong because they said some sort of phrase? hmm

My issue is that people throw around the word "racism" like candy nowadays. If you truly appreciated the severity, history and reality of real racism you wouldn't be so flippant about using the word and labelling people as racist. Especially when you struggle to find examples. I find that behaviour disgusting personally.

The problem is the forum was so far over on the radical left that the presence of dissenting moderate left to centre right opinions now appears to some as a shift to the radical right.

What is that line they like to trot out? I believe it goes: "when you're used to privilege, equality feels like oppression".

So you object to the phrase 'reverse-racism'? You don't have a problem with people calling out anti-white hatred?

If you truly appreciated the severity, history and reality of real racism you wouldn't be so flippant about using the word and labelling people as racist. That's because racism (more specifically discrimination) IS thrown around like candy nowadays.
If the examples of police brutality, Islamophobia, immigrant-phobia, sexism, calling the cops on ordinary citizens, bills to eliminate welfare, the growth of prisons, etc. don't convince you, I don't know what to tell you.

I mean hell, we have law-makers literally yelling the n-word, knowingly on-camera:
(Side-note: This show is terrifying.)

I didn't struggle to find anything. You want more examples of discrimination?

Here's one generalizing Republicans: https://www.neogaf.com/threads/eliz...-emergency-room.1464009/page-2#post-253352932
Here's one about Trans people: https://www.neogaf.com/threads/self...women-in-prison.1463847/page-5#post-253352274
Here's one from YOU generalizing people born in a certain time: https://www.neogaf.com/threads/up-j...and-pedophilia.1463928/page-10#post-253351075
Here's one from a person who states he will hate/like a person based on political leanings: https://www.neogaf.com/threads/dan-...twitter-account.1463989/page-2#post-253352224
Here's one referring to "these people:" https://www.neogaf.com/threads/3-ar...on-three-year-old-boy.1464003/#post-253351643

All I did was skim the front-page of off-topic, and only in the last pages of each of those threads.

And AGAIN I'll clarify: None of these are particularly alarming on their own. People say things without being perfectly-clear all the time. I, myself, don't post on numerous occasions because I know other posters will take things out-of-context even when I have the best of intentions.

I'm not even pointing fingers at these posters; I'm sure they're all perfectly fine people. But if it's really that easy to find discriminatory posts in just a few minutes, it means the site is adopting more hatred than I would like. But it's not like I'm the authority figure, or anything like that. It's simply that I've noticed more discriminatory posts lately.

If you and others haven't noticed it, I'm glad for you. It's entirely possible I'm being too sensitive to various issues. But my thoughts are that if these comments bother me - a straight, white male - then there's a pretty good chance they bother others too. Nobody should have to experience discrimination, especially on a website they enjoy.

There are zero example of "overt racism" in those posts. In fact, the majority of them aren't even about race.

So, you have shifted the goal posts now from "racism" to discrimination. Further proves my point that you shouldn't have used the word and made the accusations in the first place.

You did make me laugh by comparing my "butthurt millenial" post to racism. Thanks for that.

It's gone from a leftist hell-hole to a typical group of right wing and right-leaning dipshits that largely make the same retarded arguments that the old folks did, just from the other side. Instead of a bunch of people patting themselves on the back for proper and correct groupthink, it's a bunch of people patting themselves on the back for noticing that the left is full of proper and correct groupthink and calling it out. We used to have threads involving outrage over something not worthy of outrage, and page upon page of posters making the same asinine variant of a "this is awful" statement, and now it's roughly the same sorts of threads, pointing out outrage over something not worthy of outrage, and page upon page of posters making the same asinine variant of a "lol free speach, snowflakes" statement.

Only now there's less of it, so that's good. I guess.

Sorry for the driveby post. I rarely actually post here anymore, and ResetERA is no better, but this thread really got me going. I wish online forums didn't have to skew so heavily to one side or the other, as it just creates partisan pockets of self-congratulating, masturbatory, bias confirming echo chambers all across the internet. I wish some of the posters here now actually spoke up back in the day, and I wish the administrative staff had done a better job of vetting moderators that had a mix of idealogies. I wish ResetERA wasn't going down the same path that old-GAF did, only ten times worse. I wish some of those posters would come back here, but they'd likely be shouted down by the new posters, and I wish some of the posters here would go over there, but they'd likely be banned.

Your response is seriously 'it's not racist; it's just discrimination?' Especially after I already corrected myself to expand the issue to all types of people instead of just races?

I don't know how to respond to this.
