Review says Atsu's plain appearance is not due to DEI but to fit narrative well. Multiple in-game NPCs show direct disdain of her look

I only clicked into this thread to see what it was about because there was no game title mentioned in the topic.

I have now learned that normal looking people cannot be protagonists in videogames. Gotta be hot. Normals and uggos can only be NPCs.

Would consider buying the game if she looked like this. Shame. Could play the realism card but I don't see a girl of Atsu's proportions realistically swinging an Odachi either.
An Odachi can weigh as low as about 2 Kg, not exactly something heavy. Most swords were very light, as a slow swing is bad. Especially in feudal Japan, the average height of men was around 5'2".

Some propaganda of average would really really help as people has completely stupid takes on distributions and thus have unreasonable expectations by taking media/social media too seriously

Yakuza director explained it - in general roles given to attractive. And it take some courage and will to step out of standard trope "it hard to explain in narrative but we will put pretty chick anyway as she markets better".
Atsu is just average - you go out on the streets of big city and 70% of middle-aged women will be like her.
It's actually a good example of DEI (it's not a bad concept btw, it's just occupied by shitheads) - same as it is everywhere else - give some power (exposure) to common folks, not just to beautiful, smart, rich and powerful.

It's just a standard choice of pretty Asian. Not average SP trying to portrait.
But is it just a coincidence that Erika Ishi is a extremist and radical leftist?

Who fucking cares. Even if she get priority due to her views (or sleep with producer "right wing correctness" or whatever) it doesn't matter if she fits the role, she is just a face. You can find pretty women and ugly women on both side of spectrum. Emphasis is different, but that's emphasis, not a distribution.
This stupid battle is kinda far from many outside US

Oh.. an ugly female masculinized character on a revenge story... how original.. game has ideas dated to the start of their development, thats why using current social politics for games that will launch in 5 years its not a great idea.. things change bruh.
