Risen | Official Thread (PC/PC/PC/360) -- RPG from Gothic creators

XBOX - RECORD ME LOVING DOWN MY WOMAN GOOD
Well, I'm liking it a lot so far. I killed a lot of enemies easily until I got to Jan, the first NPC you meet, and around there the same enemies wound up being about 2x stronger...more like 4x. Weird.

Still, I love the exploration and this does feel almost exactly like Gothic. Very fun. No problems yet, though I admit the texture work is some of the worst I've seen this gen, on landscapes at least. Seems lazy developing/porting, as some of it has been stretched WAY too much to cover the environment.

Anyway, great game so far. I'm on my way to Harbor Town from the North Entrance, and having to wade through enemies is getting hard. Especially multiples. I need some training, as I'm only level 3 I think.

Currently playing through Risen (PC) for the second time since buying it at release. Damn, this game is GOOD.

Is time traveling possible yet? I'd really like to play Risen 2 already :D

For the few people who may have played both versions: if I can get the 360 version for $18, and the PC version is $40, is the PC version effectively twice as good as the now-patched 360 version if the PC is a e8400/ati4850? I keep waiting for the PC version to come down in price but it just sits there, even on Steam (+Tages which is annoying).

I was going to skip this game for Gothic 4 until I read that german magazine preview. Thank god for that preview, Risen is really good.

The sense of exploration and danger really reminds me of Demon's Souls, every few steps into the wilderness feel rewarding. Combat is strangely fun, it doesn't look great in videos, I guess it's the satisfaction that you get out of the difficulty.

I love almost everything about this game, and sometimes it can look STUNNING:

http://clip2net.com/clip/m40331/1286477691-clip-1244kb.jpg

Much better in motion. I max it on 1080p/60fps.

I find it bizarre that there is no character creation though, voice acting for the playable character wasn't necessary, and he looks awfully generic. :lol

GAF is absolutely right, if you like WRPGs odds are you'll love this game.

Back to exploring.

I wonder why but my guess is prostitution (nothing worse than you'd see on TV here in the States though.)

Um, I cant take screenshots for some reason, they are all black...

But the game has a weird glitch, my characters clothes arent there, they are invisible, so you can only see his legs, arms and head, and all the foilage, I can sort of see the outlines, but again, invislble >.<?

Wat do?!

Sorry, I played on the 360 which had it's own host of problems, but not that one.

Where do I get some decent armour from >.< still walking around in my rags...

Also, when I level up, do I get points to spend or anything? And can I only learn things from buying talents/thingys from the trainers?

You get new clothes once you're further along helping out whichever side you are going with.

Is the full game as demanding (spec-wise) as the demo? My laptop can handle most new games fine in 1366x768 but the demo just brought it to its knees.

Should play fine on that rig at native resolution. You may have to adjust a few sliders but it'll definitely be playable.

Funny. I had JUST had a conversation with my friend about Risen. I was looking for a new RPG to play and Risen was mentioned. I couldn't bring myself to pay $40 for it when Mass Effect 2 was out there. I said if it came down to $15 I'd buy it.

Here it is at $15 now. Lol. Perfect. Bought.

Yes you get experience points you can put into different abilities, but you have to find a trainer that teaches that skill.

It's a crime to skip this over Gothic 4. G4 is horrendous.

I can help you with the black screen issue. You're using vista/windows 7 right? You have to right click -> properties the executable, go into compatibility tab and select "Disable desktop composition" should be fine from there.

Two hours in on the PC version and loving this so far. I've been playing on normal and it's seemed really difficult. I don't know how much of that is because of armor, but I just got
worker's clothes
so maybe that will make things easier?

Seems like I have to hit guys like 20 times, but I can get two shot.

You either need to find a trainer to use the skill points you have earned or you are fighting things you should not be fighting yet.

That was always fun in Gothic and Gothic 2 (unless you didn't expect it). You could totally exploit trolls very early on if you had the patience to run around in circles for a while. :lol

I just grabbed Risen, screw waiting for for the Christmas sale.

Keep in mind the fight system make
s it so that you can beat anyone. It just takes a while and probably not entirely intended even though Gothic was the same way

So far, the only thing that's really annoying is when you're fighting with people helping you and you accidentally hit one of them. I have had this happen like 10 times and I have had to reload a quick save each time.

Yeah you have to be very careful about that, when in doubt, back off.

Did Steam run out of keys again?

I bought this earlier today and installed it. Went to play it just now and it gives me an error, "failed to contact key server"

^^;

According to a Steam moderator yes. Wow, running out of keys on the first night of the sale. This thing must be selling like gangbusters.

I forgot how much of a decent game this was. Just installed it and had a minor stuttering issue on my ATI card, fixed it by running D3D Overrider...last time I played it I had an Nvidia card and ended up having to revert to ancient drivers to get the game playable.

They talk to you eventually, or if you do some other stuff, you can cast 'jokes' on them to make em friendlier to yonderself too.

It seems like I can't advance any further if I can't talk to her.

Like the above poster mentioned, use the Joke spell to fix pissed off NPC's.

It's actually the second time they sold out of keys, though they refilled pretty quick on the first time.

A no-cd crack will let you play the game, in case you haven't gotten a key yet.

Anyways, I may or may not wait until I get a new video card to play. My GTX 275 isn't quite giving me 60fps. I'm managing mostly 40-50fps, so I might just wait in case I upgrade real soon. I hear AMD cards run this a lot better...we'll see what happens with the 6970 announcement.

I did my first playthrough on a GTS250 and it ran at a solid 30-40 at 19x12, so you'll be fine.

Good to see this game is getting more sales like it deserves. When I checked it was 2 on the top seller list which is a huge surprise. I wonder if it ever surpassed blackops

I posted a bunch of screens on the pc game thread. They should be replaced hereeee

Glad to see the game doing so well, even if its only because its on sale. Are they still working on a sequel? I feel like we haven't heard anything in a long time.

I need to go back and finish up my mage playthrough, and I also want to at least see the beginning of the warrior path.

Max settings. Performance isn't bad by any means, I just figure I might as well wait a tiny bit if I'm going to be getting a new video card. I'm pretty anal about wanting 60fps.

Yes Risen 2 will come out in 2011. I hope that will be a contender for 2011 RPG GOTY - a title claimed by Risen in 2009.
