Risk of Rain (Steam): Side-scrolling Binding of Isaac

This game is pretty easy on the normal/medium difficulty so far. I finish the game more often than losing unless I play as a class that struggles or I don't understand.

The game doesn't satisfy me the way Binding of Issac does, as I feel I'm just mindlessly kiting enemies that take 6 minutes to kill around and I'm not doing anything that I'd need to pay attention to succeed at.

I haven't beaten the game yet and I still find the game fun, but I agree that in singleplayer this game is not as satisfying as other well-known games with roguelike elements.

Traversal/exploration is a chore and feels needlessly time consuming, especially at the start. The characters move rather slow for such a large map, items are sparse, and enemy spawns are a bit too low in the beginning. You might reach a chest that you can't open, or enemies will spawn in a weird place, impeding progress by making you either go back/up/down to kill them so you can open the chest/buy item. Since enemies don't drop anything real nice(just xp and money), killing them isn't very rewarding because it's more of a means to an end. I don't feel right judging this game on another's merits, but in BoI for instance, getting a random bomb or a key or money is rather significant. There's nothing like that here.

After you bulk up a bit, it gets more fun because you can kill stuff faster, as designed and expected, but then the game gets kind of long for the style of gameplay it offers. You have to still go through these really large maps and get stuff, but then enemies will swarm like crazy. You kill faster, but with the rate they spawn, you're still gonna be fighting for a long time. The combat won't change much either, since you're still gonna be using the same moves, and all the passives won't affect how you play (kind of how I feel about borderlands where I'm just running and gunning).

But in the end, I picked this up because there aren't many multiplayer games of this genre, and in that regard, I'm satisfied because it's always more fun to share the experience.

At least when comparing it to Isaac it's giving you a close idea of what it is because otherwise people tell you it's a roguelike, which it isn't.

It's not 1997, nobody actually gets confused when you say an indie game with procedural maps and a permadeath mechanic is a "roguelike."

Did anyone here receive a key for Risk of Rain from the Humble Store? Resender didn't work either and spam folders are empty. Humble support didn't respond yet.

Check in your Humble Library. You have the option to redeem the game to your Steam account and download it directly DRM free as well.

I wasn't logged in on my iPhone, but entered the right email address before purchasing it so nothing is my library.

Hmmm, that's problematic. Are you sure the transaction went through? I had that issue with Rogue Legacy, but it turned out I improperly sent the transaction and it never went through.

Customer service is probably a little less active on the holiday, if they don't get back to you today you'll surely get a response tomorrow.

Given that you bought on your phone, my guess would be that you typoed your email address and didn't notice.

I've beaten the game on normal for the first time. I did it with the engie, which is a pretty cool class, although in the end I let my drones kill everything while I rocketted my way through the scenarios with my x3 rusty jet pack.

I agree the game is nowhere near as good as BoI, there's too much running around, kitting the enemies. The pacing never feels right. It's slow in the beginning because there're not many enemies and it's even slower in the end because there're so many enemies and they're so healthy. By the third scenario, it's a bit of a grind fest.

I will continue playing though, classes are quite different and that makes the game fun enough.

BTW, I want to like the dude with the shield, but there're so many aoe attacks by enemies that he's pretty useless.

No, I used auto fill and I checked it afterwards. It was the right email address.

Got a resender mail and when I click on my Risk of Rain link:

Order canceled.

Oops, this order was canceled.

Please don't hesitate to contact us if you are seeing this in error. We will get it sorted out ASAP!

But my Paypal has been charged. Still no support email!

Man, whatever part of this game randomly chooses environment types isn't really spicing things up. Really want to get to the underwater cave level so I can grab Acrid, but I keep getting tossed in that snow level for area 3.

That said, HAN-D is the fucking boss. Punching the shit out of enemies is soooo satisfying.

Fuck these rocket shooting asshole enemies :(

A-yup. They're pretty much the only game-enders for me once I hit a certain item point.

Gotta get back into this now that tons of people are trying it out and loving it. Took a small break after getting all the unlocked characters, now I just need to grab the remaining items I'm missing.

*looks at individual character goals, specifically the Miner's*

...you know, maybe it can wait.

Been playing this for a few hours, but it kind of sucks that there are 10 classes but you can only access one. I have yet to unlock even one of them. :/
They could have at least given you 3-4 classes from the start, kind of boring to play the same class over and over again. I eventually gave up and just searched the web for how to unlock them.
But other than that, I've been enjoying it.

I feel that I can beat the game with the mercenary on monsoon, I just need the right items; I got to the 4th level with mostly bad items.

Does any one know how to fix the sound issue? In which you randomly lose and gain sound throughout the game. Myself and all my friends are suffering from it.

Started playing this after the Steam sale. It's pretty good, though the UI is beyond terrible. Co-op is really the only fun way to play this.

Finally beat the Temple level and I accidentally restarted to the first level instead of proceeding to the last, thanks to them changing the button prompt. How could that possibly have been a good idea?

I've been doing pretty well with Acrid, though usually it depends what items I get. It's frustrating not being able to hover over item descriptions before purchasing one.

Here's a front page Destructoid article that glows about this game. Very cool to read if you like this game and want to see it get more press.

Shabbady-dooooooo

I almost have the hang of Mercenary down. I also beat the game on Normal with HAN-D and Jesus Christ was it probably the tensest game I've played. Hot damn. Got real damn lucky with double Tesla Coils and like Bitter Roots early on. Gave me the life to escape a lot of shit situations. HAN-D's damage output is pretty fucking crazy, just have to play him real careful.

Still trying to figure out Miner. He may just not be for me. =/

I'm really disappointed to discover this game doesn't support cloud saves. I've been playing a lot on my laptop, since I had back problems, and now I discover my destop doesn't have any of the unlocks. I'm so used to cloud saving that sometimes I forget how it sucks that it's not standard yet.

Yeah I'm so used to cloud saves that I forgot to backup my saves before I formatted my laptop.

I might, but my point was that you can't describe games with the title of another game. It's just poor use of language.

Yeah, I regret doing it. It was mentioned before. "Side-scrolling roguelike shooter" would have been better. I used Isaac because it's well-known among the PC crowd and because the system of collecting item buffs is superficially similar.

Well, been playing some more. I managed to unlock 5 characters. I like the engineer. That homing attack is great for killing off stragglers that spawned out of sight (also nice for picking off bosses on a higher platform). I'm still enjoying the game after 9 hours, but each run feels a lot longer than I'd like to spend, especially if I want to do some exploring for items.

Beat the game co-op on Monsoon difficulty. I was Acrid and my friend was Huntress. My friend died for 2 stages so I got to loot them for myself, look how overpowered this is:

At a certain point on stage 3 or so I became basically invincible. I can't even tell how many drones I have in that shot. Was pretty amazing towards the end (we didn't even have to farm other levels). In the last level we just kept farming elite mobs over and over again with the drones doing most of the work. Using the doll item on bosses is amazing as it takes about 1/5th of their health.

Fun game but needs some UI work and some tweaks to movement speed. Game takes way too long to get started and level navigation can seem like a chore. Controller support is decent in game but why there's no cloud save is strange to me. Seems like that would be a simple box and file path to fill in.

My longest run yet, about 61 minutes. Mostly because I couldn't find the teleporter on level 3 and just kept running around in circles. Difficulty went up to Insane and I had 14,000 credits and nothing to spend it on. I finally found the teleporter, beat the boss, and the game crushed me on the next level.

Rocket enemies keep fucking me over and I can't seem to get past level 3. Ceremonial dagger has to be one of the best items in the game, coupled with rockets it does ridiculous damage to everything.

I can't remember the name, but there is one item that creates a ghost for every enemy on screen. If you're being mobbed or if you're kiting a large group of enemies around, it can be used to devastating effect. :)

Delicious! My best and longest solo run on normal (can't check the score right now as I'm at work) was thanks to having 6 drones + a Drone Repair Kit, I can't even begin to imagine the destruction a gang that size causes. Early on I thought drones weren't worth the cost but when you have a group of them they get OP.

Drones+Jet Pack is the finest kiting combo.

Drones seem to be vital, indeed. I had my longest run yet with the Engineer, 98 minutes, and it was all due to a pack of eight drones buzzing around me. The difficulty level went up to Hahahaha and it was pure insanity, but fun. :D Somehow I unlocked the Bandit in all of this.

Drones are amazing. I get everyone I see.
But I also love any healing items I get. If I get the ones that heal me for damage and kills, then I'm pretty much immortal.

One more showing off how insane you can get:

I think I've exhausted Acrid as a playstyle ;). Core mechanics in this game are really fun.

In Monsoon, there's definitely a tipping point where you can't get hurt/close to death anymore. Until you find that balance, there is definitely somewhat of a challenge.
