Risk of Rain (Steam): Side-scrolling Binding of Isaac

So I finally picked this up. Final game is quite harder than the demo, I'm thinking about setting in for caual dificulty xD

I've tried the 360 controller and I don't have any problem with stairs anymore, the same goes for Saturn gamepad. I've yet to decide on the pad I use. The button layout of the Saturn pad is not the best for this game, but the d-pad of the 360 controller is pretty crappy... deciions, decisions...

I just wanted to say this game has infected my brain, and I can't stop thinking about getting home and playing it. I absolutely did not expect that at all when buying it. Now I only hope I can actually get the server function working so a friend and I can try to co-op it. Time to try Hamachi!

So, when you highlight the casual difficulty is says unlocks don't save. Does that just mean item unlocks, or does that mean character unlocks as well? I heard Patrick Klepek on the Bobmcast say "Play it on easy to unlock all the classes", but I was afraid those unlocks wouldn't stick thanks to the tooltip. If character unlocks to work, then I might do that just to unlock the remaining characters I don't have.

I don't know. But I think I will stick with normal for a while. My main problem is getting used to cooldowns and the controller layout. I think I will finally go with the 360 controller.

you cannot save item and monster logs on easy, but you can do most character-specific challengenges

You definitely keep characters unlocked and items and everything on Easy. I honestly don't know what they mean by saying unlocks aren't saved.

The one difference is that monster logs don't drop on Easy so you'll have to play on Normal or Hard to get those to unlock The Huntress.

There might be one or two other characters not obtainable on Easy. Can't recall now.

I'm pretty much done with the game after about a dozen hours. The netcode isn't great and could use some balancing in my opinion.

The game is fucking great! Friend of mine randomly bought him and myself a copy last night.

I think we played for like...5-6 hours straight? We ended up unlocking a couple characters and finishing the game on normal.

The music is just awesome, the art in the game is just amazing. Perfect pixel art. The enemies animate pretty well. Just have a look at the monster log to see what I'm talking about. All the enemies look beautiful.

Best "Use Item" I've found was that saw blade thing that shoots out and comes back to you. Really helped us out getting rid of large mobs at choke points.

Get this game guys. Totally worth the money, especially on sale.

Holy hell this game is unforgiving. First run: placed in this small room where I was surrounded by enemies within seconds and torn to shreds. Second run: managed to activate the teleporter and wait the 90 seconds, but then it told me to kill the remaining enemies. Yeah, that didn't happen. Third go: waited a while before activated the teleporter, leveled up a bunch and got some neat items, then faced the Magma Worm. Got him down to half of his health before I was overtaken. What a difficult game, but damn is it fun.

Just bought this last night. Already played it a ton. Can't wait to unlock another class. Not usually into these sorts of games, but I really like the combat in this.

Switched to easy and couldn't beat the game becuse I couldn't find the end of the last stage. After 1+ hour, got bored and let myself killed.

Beat this game on normal with a friend.

It's pretty alright. Plundering a 2D environment and talking to each other about the newest item you picked up is pretty nice. Not really feeling the actual traversal, or fighting enemies for that matter. Reminds me more of a smaller scale MMO (without the first M) than Binding of Isaac. Kinda slow, kinda empty.

Will try it on Hard to see if it clicks more.

Wonderful little game, it gets repetitive after a dozen hours or so and the last level bothers me every single time due to the ridiculous amount of never ending enemies but it's very worth the entry price.

So far, the huntress is the best class to me.

I was playing on easy the other day and picked up a bunch of new items I hadn't got before and none of them were recorded in the item log afterwards, although I've unlocked new items and characters. Could this be what they mean?

So I did, but I reached a point where I could go no further, shot a big cannon, expected to open a hole, but nothing happened. I killed a Scavenger like 6 times xD

you were in the last room, there's a computer terminal you need to activate on the right side that spawns the final boss

What's the best tactic to get through this game? Do I rush to the teleporter to activate it, then clean up the monsters and chests? This is what I've been doing, but I've only gotten to the third stage.

Just grabbed the 4-pack for some friends and me. Definitely enjoying it so far! My only problem is my game isn't producing any sound. Only played a bit last night, so I'll probably try and fix it after work.

on easy i don't really feel rushed and like to make sure i make enough money to open all the chests and ring all the shrines. also if the level you're in has the HP shrines they get destroyed by activated the teleporter so you usually want to hit them first.

still haven't played enough on normal to really work out the most efficient playstyle.

Hope you get lucky with the items, use terrain/platforms to your advantage, and keep an eye on your attack's timers. Try to power up at least a little before starting the teleporter.

I've only played on normal so far, because it said progress won't be saved on easy. Does it save the unlocks anyway?

I'll try getting more items in the first level. If I didn't get really lucky I'd be completely fucked in level 2 because I had almost no items or items that weren't that useful.

Do items show up in the item log if you played on easy mode? What unlocks besides character classes in easy mode? I know the Monster Logs don't drop in easy mode.

Amazing game with currently 6 hours into it and no hesitation to put in more time into this. Stock with Normal and Unlocked the Sniper and Bandit. I had no issue with replay value in this game just using commando/enforcer and now it is even better that the sniper and Bandit have unique skill sets that add a whole new challenge to the game.

For those with online issues, a friend and I had to use hamachi to get online up and running.

You could be correct but I know you unlock items on Easy since that's how I first got the survive for forty minutes achievement and item unlock. But I haven't paid enough attention to the item log to see if that's logging along with actually picking up items. I think you could be correct, though, as I can remember at least once thinking I should have had an item logged and it wasn't. I've played too much on Normal with friends after starting on Easy to really be able to compare easily now.

I still suggest people start on easy to learn the game, unlock a character or two, and generally have a bit more relaxed and good time before moving up to Normal and dying a bunch.

I've been playing this with a friend. Engineer and Huntress are how we normally roll. Unlocked everything but Mercenary and Miner. The melee classes seem too difficult, though the Acrid seems to have some potential if I learn to exploit it better.

I hate any enemies that launch missiles. Best item is Jar of Souls, but it really makes the game slow down in crowded areas.

Sounds like a problem you should fix. The game has routinely been on sale for 2.50 with the DLC and is normally $8. It's $4 right now.

I might, but my point was that you can't describe games with the title of another game. It's just poor use of language.

Wow the bandit is really nice to play.

LMAO, I still feel weird because I've unlocked and used every character and even beaten the game with Sniper and Mercenary (came real close with HAN-D and Miner too) but for the life of me I just cannot get the hang of Bandit. I don't know why but I just suck with him.

I'm real glad to see so many new faces playing and enjoying this game. I'm debating making a guide for general play and for each character once my free time opens up a little bit. Should help people having difficulty with certain characters or areas.

Though my strat for Lava Core will just be "Hope for not Lava Core next time"

So am I playing this game wrong? I've been trying to stockpile a haul of items and I'm usually at like level 6 or 7 before I even attempt the first boss, but a friend says he goes right at the first boss at like level 2 or 3. I guess I'm getting too greedy in the first level.

I prefer your method and find myself more successful typically. The two guys I play with start the timer as fast as possible and it drives me nuts a little bit. We've beaten it on Normal that way but when solo I definitely prefer beefing myself up first.

Yeah, I kinda like that also.

Though I think I might bump the difficulty down for a while to unlock a class or two. I didn't know you could unlock them all on easy.

yeah the wording is really bad, it won't save your high scores and stats but you can do all the unlocks except the huntress (because logs don't drop in easy) and the merc's "beat the game on monsoon" cheevo (obviously)

Did the Merc get changed? He was for beating the game five times. My friend just got it on our recent time through that was on Normal, I'm fairly certain.

At least when comparing it to Isaac it's giving you a close idea of what it is because otherwise people tell you it's a roguelike, which it isn't.

Sadly I missed this on the last flash sale so I'm hoping it shows up again before the end.

Just my own experience, but..

Unlocking characters is the key.

Keeping difficulty low is another thing.

One thing I found if you get stuck on higher difficulties, find a launch lad and just bounce on it and take pot shots at enemies.. even more so if you have drones. Wear em down, you're already at high difficulty so taking more time won't matter and there's even an achievement for lasting that long.

But yeah, the key is to unlock as many chests as possible to upgrade. Sometimes you get lucky and get health boosting items/etc. One respawn I had nothing but health regen items, and something that caused killed enemies to burst into flames which really helped out to defeat clustered enemies.

So how exactly does the online part work exactly? As far as connecting or hosting people to your games?
