Dang, that's a crazy number of drones! Your frame rate must have died during any combat. One more showing off how insane you can get:
I think I've exhausted Acrid as a playstyle. Core mechanics in this game are really fun.
In Monsoon, there's definitely a tipping point where you can't get hurt/close to death anymore. Until you find that balance, there is definitely somewhat of a challenge.
The game SERIOUSLY chugged whenever they started firing, which kind of ruined the game from there on out.
I played the demo and wasn't too impressed. I was expecting something more akin to Castlevania Harmony of Despair, which I played the shit out of. The combat seemed janky, and the graphics didn't do much for me.
I haven't played this game yet (no mac demo either yet afaik) but I am looking forward to it after hearing impressions and seeing videos.
Just one question though, do you like Spelunky?
Haven't tried Spelunky to be honest. My friend has some steam codes for this game, so maybe I just need to try some multiplayer for me to get into it.
The teleporter boss in area 2 is hell.
Which of area 2: the Damp Caverns or Sky Meadow?
Where's the file save btw?
The one complaint I have with Risk of Rain is the slow down on my laptop. I was playing only on easy mode and got to HAHAHAHA because I didn't realize pressing Y sent you to the last level and kept pressing X, going through about 20 levels before reaching the final one. When I finally realized my mistake and got to the last level, it was basically a slide show. Finished the game, but it took quite a bit of time just running down the hall.

My desktop is pretty solid so it can brute force this game well. I've only had framerate problems once, with an insane enemy count while farming stage 1 the second time around.Dang, that's a crazy number of drones! Your frame rate must have died during any combat.
Are some of the classes really poorly balanced?
I'm getting pretty good at the game, able to get to level 3/4 with the Commando and the Enforcer on the middle difficulty. Then I unlocked the the Bandit, and he just seems completely awful. His primary attack doesn't have splash damage and hitting the button faster doesn't shoot fast enough. His attack with splash damage is weak as hell even though it cools down quickly. And the sniper shot is way too slow.
But then I unlocked the Engineer and I destroyed FUCKING EVERYTHING. On my first try with the Engineer I beat the entire game, and it was pretty easy too. The Acrid is also in the same boat.
This no items shit is hard work.
In a word, yes. The degree of item dependence varies considerably by class, as does their late-game effectiveness. However, with enough work the game is soloable as anyone, although some characters (like the Enforcer) will always have a real hard time without great items. Are some of the classes really poorly balanced?

My friend and I can beat the game under virtually any other conditions (we've done runs as two terrible characters on monsoon, including double mercenary for the achievement). Playing without items is definitely the hardest way to play the game so that's what we've gone with as of late.is there an achievment for this? seems rather masochistic xD

The secret hardest part of playing without items is not accidentally blocking off the teleporter by killing the boss when it's standing in a location that the item it drops prevents access to the teleporter.

Does any one know how to fix the sound issue? In which you randomly lose and gain sound throughout the game. Myself and all my friends are suffering from it.
I'd like to play this more but every time I start the game I lose audio. I've used the fix on the Steam forums but it'll only work until the next time I start the game.
Comparing this to spelunky ? really ??? lol.
Both spelunky and Isaac are vastly superior to risk of rain IMO, but it's still a fun game.
Weird, I keep coming back to Enforcer. Only bad thing is the reach of the shotgun IMO. I tried playing Engineer, but it seemed like his attacks didn't do as much damage as I would like. Maybe I'm playing engineer the wrong way or something.
Thanks guys. I guess I'm trying to make this game too much a solo game without considering that some classes are simply better as co-op support.
The Engineer is killer. The homing rockets recharge quickly and I just shoot them every single time even if there are no enemies on the screen - usually they home in on something off-screen and I'll randomly get XP/money flying back at me. The mines are excellent by just getting enemies to follow you and dropping them all behind you, and the turret is pretty great too. Even the engineer's primary attack is pretty good - not only does it have splash damage, but there are three of them, and they can get decently powerful.
The Engineer just seems totally over-powered in every way (not that I'm complaining!)
Wow, the one time I start a session thinking it'll only take a few minutes since I'm so bad at the game I make it to the final boss and unlock the survive for 40 mins achievement....
Well, I finally did it. Hard as shit.
Took around thirty attempts. Most of them were as Acrid but I ended up switching to Huntress for the last few and that's what did it. As a less powerful character this would be more impressive, I'm sure. This is incredible!!
Move the backup one too. Works fine for me.any tips on how to transfer saves? If I just move the .ini I get an error.

Acrid is the best choice not just because he has splash but also because his gameplay mechanic allows him to hit things and then run from them forever. His only weakness is that he's pretty much useless on Providence (although that only means that the fight will take a long time, not that it'll be difficult).I like the bandit far more than the first two classes, the crucial feature is the three second stealth ability. Not only is that enough to run past anything that may be chasing you, the stealth is also not broken by passive items that hurt enemies near you so you can run through the whole crowd with barbed wire or a tesla coil without taking any hits (drones continue to fire at enemies but the enemies don't shoot back). He relies heavily on items but synergizes well with them.
If you want splash then the Akrid is the best choice.

I would put Bandit as one of the worst classes out there due to just how unlikely it is that you'll be able to exploit what about him is good.
Epidemic destroys the worms faster than basically anything else in the game. I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to work the way that it does (it spreads separately to all of their body parts and, because they never completely leave play like the magma worm does, it lasts for a very long time). So true, I was just running from him while my drones dealt all the damage but once he took them down the fight slowed a lot, though the Wurms were pretty easy and once I killed the two Temple Guards he summons in the third phase I had enough money to repair all my drones xD.
My mercenary runs didn't turn out well so far. A super close-range character without a knockback just seems like he'd get into all sorts of trouble.the usable item that unlocks chests on screen is kinda great, really helped early game and i snowballed when i found the ol' looper (100% critical chance on low health enemies) and the wicked ring (each critical hit reduces cooldown by 1), basically free chests forever.
i also found the robot janitor, i hope he's viable.
i managed to clear the game with the mercenary in multiplayer but i find him really weak, maybe i'm playing him wrong though.
They're a 4-man team, so I guess so. It's one of my biggest complaints about the game. If you've been gaming on PC for a bit longer, this is how it used to be in a lot of games in the 90s. xDCan someone explain to me in layman's terms how to get this going with a friend on Steam? I don't know anything about this IP or port business, and neither does she. I feel like in the year 2014 this shit should be more intuitive. I bought this game specifically for co-op and I've no idea how to get it working.
Is the team too small to incorporate a party system?
